So ever since CCP hit us with the news that they've been developing a whole different game with the same team that's supposed to be "laser focused" on Dust514 on PS3, the forums have been ablaze, man, and even though I haven't been an active player for quite some time now, it was disappointing to hear that to say the least. Now don't get me wrong, when I heard my buddy telling me that Dust is coming to PC I was excited; Great, I sold my PS3 earlier last year and I can finally play with my good friends again. Now obviously we all know that it wasn't truly the case, and that's all fine and dandy. But what really disappointed me was the way CCP handled the whole situation.
Let me be clear here because I'd expect this type of ambiguous marketing BS from company like EA or Microsoft but I held CCP up to higher standards (even after the whole Beta/Not Beta debacle where you couldn't get a clear cut answer from anyone). Let me give you an example from an interview conducted by PCWorld where Jean-Charles Gaudechon is asked about the future of Dust514 and here's what he's got to says:
"Dust is going strong. Dust is going really well. Dust is a product we're really proud of, and that's not about to change. Again, in six months or a year it's difficult to say..."
Now, Jean-Charles, I don't know how it works in France, or Iceland for that matter, but where I come from a product or a service where there is no guarantee on it's viability inside a 6 month period, is not a strong product that anyone, other than used car salesmen perhaps, would be proud to promote and sell. Not only are they still trying to nickel and dime their customer with a dying game but they're using that money to build basically a new game which is the game that Dust514 was supposed to be in the first place. In the same interview, Mr. Gaudechon goes on to explain what makes Legion different from Dust and he identifies what calls "the three pillars":
1. Deep, balanced, competitive shooter 2. Sandbox experience, including PVE 3. Player driven economy
Now Gaudechon is proud to point out that 2 of out of 3 of these pillars are "all new". Now I disagree with him, because I think all of them are "all new" because with Dust514 we certainly never had a balanced shooter, we never had sandbox and PVE, and we never really drove any economy whatsoever. Now where I disagree with Jean is that we were PROMISED all of them! After all of this, the dude's got the NERVE to boast about how transparent and open they are about the way they do business and I don't know about you guys but I think we could do with less of this type of sleazy BS. Now don't let me even get started the way the CCP dudes were playing down the "polarised" opinions of the community in their official streams. Instead of sitting there with water bottles in your hand and a smug smile on your face you better hit the forums, double check what polarised views mean and address the issue again. Candidly.
Just go out there and say it, CCP. The idea was good, the community was great, the vision is excellent. I'm not gonna sugar coat it for you guys because the execution, PR, promotion and communication with the fans were all disasters. You guys gotta admit it, tell people it failed and you wanna restart the project on PC and you wanna do your best to accommodate all the loyal fans that have stayed with your game so far despite all the problems and screw ups. At the end of the day, I'm not pissed that you're pulling the plug on the game and moving it to the PC, your bread and butter. No big deal. I'm disappointed because of the way you decided to go about it, insulting the fans' intelligence with this load of hot crap. |

This sums it up. I'm sure some people are pissed the game we were promised but someone else is getting it was announced. The majority of us, however, knew this was inevitable. Its the way they told us, the way they blew us off, and the way they wear those smiles that pisses us off the most.
Had they gone into Fanfest with a truthful schedule, aka nothing with Dust in the name, I would have been upset, still watched, probably would have gotten excited, and would have marked it down on my list of potential future games.
Now, CCP would have to fly to me Iceland, let me get in the ring with Rouge for a couple rounds, and officially announce that I won the forums over CCP themselves yesterday before I would ever consider picking up Legion. Of course, now they would have to bring it to the PS4 as well because I'm not going out of my way anymore. If character transfers are a thing, maybe I'll sell mine to someone...

^ this
But I see multiple layers of problems with actually saying that. Exclusivity agreements with Sony and Sony having more lawyers & money. Needing Sony on board for the Valkyrie VR thing on PS4 because they are not going to put their VR eggs in one basket with Facebook. End of life cycle of the PS3 and hardware capabilities. . .
I am not white knighting CCP here. They way they announced this is s slap in the face to every DUST player who has stayed the course. . . but I get the logic behind the decision. How they acted on this has lost them a lot of goodwill as a company. To throw their own stolen quote back in their faces "Honor isn't about the decisions that you make, it's about dealing with the consequences."
I'd not expect an answer until well after Fanfest, since the entire Rek office is busy with that. . . but answers need to come. Soon, without a Gäó. |

CCP and the CPM need to take Remedial English classes. Learn to write.
I've been with this game since I received my code on April 18, 2012, I'll be pissed if I want. If these children at CCP thought this was the right way to tell people (I understand the CPM told them it was a bad idea) they need to take their lashes. They'll never learn I'd we roll over and tell them to do better next time.

I mean is it really too much to ask for a candid, no BS communication from CCP, a company that takes great pride in that very thing? I think I'm not the only one who's frustrated in trying decrypt their messages and marketing talk into the real world language here. And if that's not enough some of the messages are even more confusing than that, to a point where I'm starting to think I'm being intentionally mislead.
I mean I don't think it's rocket science or anything but, if you're gonna announce something, you better have something to announce. So far the only thing CCP has really communicated, when it comes to Dust514/Legion, is that they're not fully committed to Dust514. That's the only thing we know for certain after this whole train wreck. Now on top of that I'm assuming they're not fully committed to Legion either as they keep referring it as "just" a prototype and there's that ever-present disclaimer "if it ever hits the market" whenever the game is mentioned. At the end of the day, when it comes to the stuff that matters for Dusters, I can some up the whole EVE fan fest thusly:
"Dust514 is being phased out, it won't be fully supported and won't be getting more significant content patches. The servers will be shut down in near future. We are looking at opportunities to keep the Mercs in the world of EVE vision alive, by exploring the possibility of making an improved version of Dust for PC to fully implement that vision. Stay tuned for more information. Thank you for your support and it has been an amazing journey!"
How about that? I wrote that little thing in 2 minutes so it's not my best piece by far but it sure as heck's more candid and clear than all the signals (and noise) that we've been receiving throughout the whole fan fest experience. So far this whole thing reeks of confusion, lack of confidence and, quite honestly, unprofessionalism. Yeah. I said it.
