I am furious and deeply saddened by these announcements but I hope that I may be able to stay rational and give an explanation to CCP and anyone else who doesn't understand where all of the anger is coming from. I believe that nothing can be understood by simply stating "DUST is dead; **** you CCP"; it needs to be done with clarity but, yes, the message will still be the same.
* A complete lack of respect for your customers.
Regardless of what happens with DUST 514 or Project Legion, the fact that the DUST 514 keynote was 15 minutes late and ran for 23 minutes, 25 seconds and contained nothing about the game that people have so clearly cared about is shockingly disrespectful. The platform to talk about all the changes that were coming to the game we cared so much about was instead used to talk about a completely different project. Imagine how EVE players would feel if the EVE keynote was entirely focused on the EVE boardgames and addressed nothing about the game. It doesn't matter if the reaction is positive or negative: how can you as a company obviously care so little about one of your own games and for the players (customers) of that game? This is frankly disgusting.
* A complete lack of information
The forums are made up of the most avid and loyal of the DUST 514 community. People such as Jadek Menaheim, running a DUST 514 lottery to show that there can be complexity in this, Judge Rhadamanthus who clearly just wanted to instruct the player base, and Cyrius Li-Moody that were putting out high quality game play videos that were showing high level play. What would they see if they were to log into the forums and have absolutely no information about what is going to happen with DUST 514? The new baby Project Legion is here, a separate entity from DUST 514, and the space for our game is being shortened. The DUST 514 progression speech has more statements on Project Legion, even stating "most of this is for Project Legion." What is going to happen to our game? The community is left alone in our own echo chamber trying to hear some actual information about DUST 514.
* Bait and Switch
Project Legion sounds promising: if I had no time, energy, or money invested in DUST 514 I would probably be ecstatic that what CCP was trying to do for years was finally coming to fruition and I, as a player, may be able to try it. The problem is that Project Legion is what DUST 514 has been promised to be for years now. Imagine if Bethesda released something like Skyrim on the PS3 but it only consisted of the town of Riverun (the first town in the game) with all these promises that it was going to be a large, sprawling epic game players began to invest time, energy, and money into the game so that when the game became what it was promised to be they would be ready. However, 'Skyrim' "couldn't match the vision" that the developers wanted so they decided to start a new project on the PC called Elder Scrolls: Online while 'Skyrim' was going to turn into a basic hack and slash.
This is the exact definition of a bait and switch; DUST 514 was promised to be this epic, sprawling game with connection to a massive universe of pirates, espionage, political intrigue where we Mercenaries would fight to shape this universe. We players/customers put time, energy, and money into playing the idea that was DUST 514, staying through the total lack of polish and incompleteness on the promise and hope that it would become what we wanted it to be. That seems to no longer be happening. Instead, everything we put into the idea of DUST 514 has been misplaced in the wrong game on the wrong console that wasn't even released yet and DUST 514 that exists now will simply become a lobby, arcade shooter.
CCP: do you have any respect for this section of the community? This is in shockingly poor taste. It doesn't even matter if DUST 514 will continue to exist as something different than what was originally promised; it isn't what was promised and what was promised is apparently happening on an entirely different game on a completely different gaming machine. After such a total betrayal of our trust and hope, how can you expect any of us to continue to support your products when you just cast us aside when you cannot deliver on what you promised?

It's weird that they talk about these elements in Legion.... that they have always promised for DUST (PvE, market)...... as if they are completely new ideas entirely...

1: Legion is Dust 514 renamed for PC, and possibly PS4 (which would be announced on the 18th or afterwards).
2: Legion will be able to do what Dust couldn't. Not because they for some reason now care more, they have more power to work with, which allows them to do all the neat ****.
Some info that I got from sources:
1: We will be able to transfer our characters over to Legion, including the stats and SP
2: All of our assets will transfer over, including our beloved BPO's.
So really, all you need is a decent PC, and you're set. So why are trying to make the game better by getting it off this underpoweredsystem and moving it along to something more suitable to its needs.
Oh wait, is it that you don't have a bball in PC like me?

Please provide links to these points.
I do have a powerful PC. It would run Legion better than my PS3 runs DUST. That isn't the point. It is still a Bait and Switch.

It's just an excuse to allow their developers in Shanghai to develop horrible quality code and still make it work. Just wait until people complain that it won't run on their 1337 gamin' rigs with crossfired 1-5712ba 19u01- graphics cards.
DUST as it is now, shouldn't have issues with frame rate, yet it does. There's nothing it does that's very special that I've seen many other games pull off that have absolutely no frame rate issues. How bad of a game do you have to develop that your menus get 15-20 FPS on your targeted machine I could even go into details about what likely is the cause however I'm sure it would be lost to the majority reading.
It's incompetency is what it is.
I am pretty excited to see what happens with it but I'm very disappointed in how CCP went about things.

Or don't have the patience to wait for the inevitable PS4 version. What they can do is work along side Dust, like they said in their keynote, and continue added assets to the game. I don't think we will see anything big functionality wise really ever again in Dust. Most likely vehicle and full weapon parity. Assets (Model assets, animation assets, and art assets) are most likely portable, so Id say seeing changes along side Dust is very likely for these types of things.
Really the functionality of the engine and the platform really does hurt Dust, and needs to be fixed somehow. This really isn't that bad of a way of doing it. I think in CCP's current plan the day Dust 514 is discontinued will most likely be the day Legion is released on the PS4.

if this were the case that might not be so bad.... on problem... ccp hasn't told us this... why?
why couldn't they state this at the dust keynote if it were true? because it it isn't? maybe?
and yes a lot of people don't have a ballin PC.... some of us just don't have rich mommies, or high paying jobs, or we have families that must be supported before spending thousands on computers and games....
bottom line ccp promised us that dust on the ps3 would be a grand experience, and we had no idea that vision was being trashed until they got one last pinch from dust players wallets for fanfest tickets so they could tell them in Iceland that their game was being abandoned... is that at the most least bad form?
this game makes me sad....

I think the closest answer we've gotten for this is a post from CCP Logibro saying that, at the moment, it can't be done due to certain restrictions and yadda yadda yadda. BUT. He said they ARE trying to figure it out.

I just don't know how to feel about Project: Legion...
I'm so happy so hear about and see the Dust 514 I've been hearing about for years! And I'm also embarrassed, upset, and a little bit betrayed at the way they're accomplishing this. They started work on it way before ANYONE ever knew about it and... It... It was just too sudden of an announcement without any feedback from the community.
Being 17 and still a Junior in High School with no job, and having Dust be my heart and soul, I now need to work up a decent amount of money to be able to purchase a decent gaming laptop to continue the journey I've been on with the F2P FPS I've come to love.
I just hope it's going to be what they said and keep their word with no more bait n' switches...

No one put a gun to your head and forced you to play this game. No one forced you to buy Aurum. CCP offered a free service that you admit to have spent 2 whole years entertaining yourself with. Nonetheless, DUST and Legion will both remain free services. Take a moment and conceptualize "free" in your mind for a moment and compare that to the many other sources of entertainment you may or may not pay for. You spent, what, $10ish bucks to see a movie at the theater? What if that movie completely blows? Do you storm the front desk of the theater demanding a refund and compensation for the time you spent in their venue? No! Of course not. Unless you're some raging, unbearable lunatic, which in that case is an entirely different issue.
I'm not trying to adamantly defend CCP here. Yeah, they ****** up pretty bad with DUST, I'll admit. It's not the best way they could have handled things. But to go on with this banter about class action lawsuits and flooding the forums with obscenities and furious letters is just absurd. You are not entitled to anything in the virtual world created by this company. With all due respect SoTa, you're a funny guy and pretty entertaining, but the sheer vanity of you and many others in this community is just staggering.

The funny thing is that so much of this anger and frustration could be completely avoided if they had actually done a DUST keynote and explained why they were doing what they are doing. If Legion had just been "DUST 514 ported to PC; longevity of PS3 version unclear" there would be a lot of anger but it wouldn't be as justified. Would I be sad that DUST 514 was being moved to the PC? A bit but mostly because of the lack of foresight CCP had on whether they should have even tried a PS3 game rather than just going PC. The fact that it is two separate projects is where the anger is.
I am not an idiot. I have been through several of my favorite games just shutting down, games that I have put as much time, energy, and money into. When Earth and Beyond, City of Heroes, Horizons, or Hellgate: London died, it was just not being worked on at all. It was the end of the road, the machine was off, and the engine began to rust. DUST is different. It isn't dead in a "we are turning off the servers because it couldn't work" sense, it is dead in the "we are instead making Project Legion into everything DUST was promised to be while DUST is just going to be an arcade shooter."
This means that everything I spent, be it real money or just emotional investment, into the idea of DUST is wasted because it is not the game we were all expecting it to be. Project Legion seems to be what that game is going to be. What is going to happen? Who the hell knows because CCP has treated the DUST community like mushrooms.
