Hello guys. Let me say what a totally disappointing Fanfest this has been for DUST 514.
I have been around since beta, and I was extremely confused back then as to why this game was being put onto the PS3. The concept of putting such an ambitious game, with a long lifespan onto a console which was close to end of life, and already restrictive for developers seemed crazy to me. The only logical choice was PC. I asked and begged for a PC port.
But I played the game now and then. I won't claim to have spent tons of money or time on this game as so many of you have. I grabbed a merc pack when they released, and I have spent entire weekends playing, but for the most part, the fact that it was on console, and mouse and keyboard support was weak kept it off my regular play list.
So fast forward to Fanfest 2014. I was in twitch chat, asking CCP Saberwing to confirm DUST 514 for PC and he just kept saying that I should watch the keynote, and he can't say anything, which is of course the case, he was never going to be able to break the silence before a huge reveal.
So I was watching the HD stream (I should add that I play EVE online), and the DUST 514 keynote starts. It's got some general vision statements, praising the community, and a fanmade video, and I am waiting for the big announcement. PROJECT LEGION! ON PC! My excitement went through the roof, finally DUST 514 had made the jump to the platform where I wanted it!
I watched him running around in a beautiful environment, they had confirmed PvE, all was well in the world. The keynote ended with nothing else about the actual future of DUST or Legion. They hadn't even really said what legion was, and certainly never even mentioned DUST past a fan video, and the fact that they could not achieve their goals without moving to pc....
But then I wondered if this game was DUST... I asked in twich chat, but nobody answered me, regarding if DUST and Legion were separate games. I went so far as to tweet (maybe my 8th tweet ever) to CCP Saberwing after the keynote to ask about this, and he replied that they were separate. This had me very concerned. I didn't want another EVE FPS before they had achieved what DUST was supposed to be, and I already had a merc I wanted to continue playing. All I wanted was to sit at my desk, and use my PC to play some battles with Subdreddit. Instead I was getting something else.
I said I would wait for the second DUST presentation to see where DUST was going, and maybe some clarification on legion. Well, the DUST progression panel started, and let me assure you, nothing was answered. DUST was not even mentioned. The first slide was "Learning from DUST" which is something we do from past events, past products, past mistakes. That made me uneasy. Then CCP Rouge started into a big list of ideas that seemed totally terrible to me, though I am not a game designer, and they may be for the best, but it sounded like Roles were forcing the game into being a class based shooter, he is talking about loot being oh so important, and I realised we were not get DUST 514 on PC, we were getting EVE : Borderlands.
So for me today, I am crushed that CCP does seem to be abandoning DUST 514, instead of the PC port I was so excited for. They can say they are continuing development all they want, but what I heard was that they could never achieve their plans on PC, so they were making a new project on PC, there was nothing at all regarding the future of DUST announced at fanfest. Not a single new weapon, vehicle, map, mode, effect or god damn mention. In fact Legion LITERALLY REPLACED DUST, seeing as it took over the 2 DUST 514 panels. In addition, they tell me that Legion is almost a borderlands with PvP, which is not going to be connecting with the Merc that I have been playing for years, instead of allowing me to play with my corp, they either have to move to PC, or play a totally different game from what I have on PC, which is going to be a secondary product from the look of it.
CCP I won't be biomassing any characters, I won't be unsubscribing from EVE (where announcements have me excited for the future), and I still want to get my hands on Valkyrie, but regardless of how DUST 514 / Legion turns out, this entire reveal has been a massive disappointment for both DUST and Legion so far. You really shat the bed on this one. The worst thing of all was the push for DUST players to come to fanfest this year. I cannot imagine how I would feel if I was a DUST player only who decided to come to Iceland this year, only to have some other game, for another platform be the focus of BOTH panels about the game I am playing, and in fact having those panels saying that DUST will never be what we were wanting it to be.
The only thing I can imagine now, is that perhaps CCP is trying to kill DUST 514 because of Sony holding onto it. So they announce Legion, barely maintain their agreement with sony, DUST dies off, and they have control again, and sony are then in a position where they still want it, but CCP can dictate more terms, and it will eventually end up on PS4. PS3 was never going to last anyway, that much was obvious when they announced DUST. A 10 year roadmap does not fit into the last 3 years of a console lifecycle. |
