This is incorrect, at least partially. The PS4 most definitely would/will be able to handle large-scale games similar to EVE Online. Same with the XBone. Consoles starting this generation are just budget PCs. The graphics won't be top of the line a year from now, but their architecture allows for PC level sprawling experiences. I personally expect to see a lot more MMOs on console this generation. The technology is there.
As for the PS3, no it probably couldn't have reached the level that CCP was aiming for. But that's kind of the issue. CCP was aiming for, and more importantly ADVERTISED DUST as being a console portal into the EVE universe. A "Triple-A MMOFPS on the PS3" to quote a fanfest presentation in the not-too-distant past.
It was CCP's big fat mouths and lack of ability to follow through that has got people so upset right now.
As of yesterday the status quo was "Keep an eye on this space, DUSTers! We're not there yet, but we're getting closer every day! Tomorrow we're even gonna let you in on some BIG plans for the game you've supported these past few years!"
The new status quo as of today is "Hey, you guys remember that failed experiment we called DUST? The test bed we used to toy with and help fund the REAL shooter we were trying to make, on PC? Remember how we kept telling them it was going to get better, and that we'd work through the kinks and deliver on our promises? Those were good times."
This is not okay.
This is NO ONE'S fault but CCP's. The players are guilty of NOTHING but for trusting CCP at their word, sticking by this game through the bad times and essentially keeping it on life support in hopes that CCP would eventually do right by them and follow through on their promises.
Being trusting is not ever a bad quality to have as a person. Being a betrayer of trust IS. |
