There are a lot of threads dealing with tanks and AV weapons and balance. I have a little thing to add to that debate.
What are tanks supposed to do in this game? I'm talking from a game balance perspective here. I think tanks should be mobile turrets that any infantry that is not armed with some kind of AV weapon should be required to run and hide from. But there is one more thing they should do on the DUST battlefield, and that is to provide mobile cover for friendly infantery to hide behind and anvance.
The problem is that tanks have a rediculous speed compared to infantery.
Tank drivers. Need to have a "walk-toggle" button that when held down reduces their speed to the walk speed of a heavy with plates. |

Hi Drecain!
I'm curious if you are new to the game, because your view on the HAVs is Classic, hard to argue with, and right on the money,... but it's also been beat to heck like a dead mouse on the forum, so... expect a quiet riot. (OOps, and btw, don't say TANKS, beacause in EVE/Dust "tank" was supposed to mean "thicken up a player's protection by stacking modules")
I posted recently that the style of HAV you're describing, that is lethal in gunnery but deliberately requiring it to need flank guards of some sort by making it a slower-speed vehicle, is PROBABLY what CCP intended at first, and would be the "balanced" device on a full size PC battle map. But in these small sized Skirm/Ambush/Dom maps, there's no way for that vehicle to survive---all our war-pieces and footmen are packed on such a tight grid we can't help falling over each other and dying far earlier than a large PC map would allow.
Boosting the speed ot the HAV, like nerfing many of the long range weapons that can eliminate HAVs/DSs etc, is TRYING to help ease our cramped fights, but that's only going to render a lot of out stuff impotent if we try to use it full-time in future large maps.
I want to see slower HAVs get back to the game, and full-destructive range returned to it and other rail-technology turret mounts. But the adjustment is going to be hard to perfect----and getting us larger maps is the better solution to tweaking around with vehicle-vs-AV stats any further. |

'been playing since early last year, 18mill SP and counting, thank you very much :P I haven't been very active on the forums though so there's that.
Still. Why shouldn't HAVs at least have the capability to be mobile cover? Perhaps buff hardeners and make them apply a speed snare as well?
HAVs need a role on the field or need to go until we get bigger maps whre they get a role. The difference between someone on foot and someone in a HAV is bigger than a mlt and a proto dropsuit. It's not good for a FPS to allow one choise of playstyle dominate that much over the rest. |

OH that would be so cool, to have a slow movement speed to match infantry movement speeds, and a combat speed.

i do that stuff on a daily bases.it works really well sometimes. but if av gets thick i have to pull out. or i lose my tank and infantry will lose their vehicle support.
when their is a major threat to my vehicle i have to focus on it until its been dealt with.then i can return t assisting my team push and capture objectives.
and with the nice ability to distract a portion of the enemy team im helping my own team by boosting morale and making it slightly easier for my own team to capture push an objective or break through a defended position. i rarely if ever see others do this though.
mlt vets are eternal. they shall be the bane to proto scrubs everywhere...

That is possible today.
Are you using KB/M? The reason I ask is keys go from 0 to full speed in one step with nothing in between. I have noticed those actions playing with friends. Controllers go from 0 to full over a range of values. Which allows the behavior today and always has.
I normally am moving either fast or not at all. When the situation is right I will move in front of troops to provide cover or to absorb Red fire. I am also used as Sniper cover from time to time.
And so it goes.

I think these. Armors are faster than infantry, but infatry should have a chance to shoot them. Slow them down is not great idea its basicaly agaist sci0fi and reality, BUT what about slow towers and make a greandes from rocket propeled weapons faster?!
