I am now running multiple fits to test some theories, that should be viable. Don't yell at me for protostomping, I love using the things I have earned and I play very suicidally, basically drop wherever I see a red dot and try to kill it. Yesterday I singlehandedly tried to win a domination game with 3 equally suiciadal randoms, and 9 snipers/redline hiders.
Yes I went 3-12, but I rejoiced in every kill because they were what you consider elite players.
all proto lows 1) Full plates 2) Full reactives 3) Full reps 4) Full ferros
high *) extender
Then I have 3 of every fit, assault scrambler, assault plasma rifle, assault combat rifle (can't deal with the rail delay)
and then my benchmark take all comers fit,
4 plates, rep, dmg mod and GA assault plasma rifle
To no surprise to anyone I guess (nor mine, I have known since they came out from experience), reactives and ferros are underwhelming at best. I am usually able to get a similar or better result by combining plates and reps, for less cpu/pg. Something that has been pointed out and is already on my list.
I am having a ton of fun with 5 reps. It's pretty badass to duck and hide, and the reload is only a couple of seconds less than a solid refill of armor. Try it out, it may not be viable or isk efficient in the long run but fun.
Now, I reluctantly tried the combat rifle because I don't do FOTM, I like using my bonuses. But even with most level 5 GAR skills, and hybrid bonuses etc, from my experience, I was doing at least 1 KDR better with it over my GAR. The scrambler I only take out if I notice multiple callogis.
I also have HMG fits, but as it is pretty FOTM I don't do them right now, unless situation calls for it.
I feel better knowing that the dev team fail fits their suits, the last year makes so much sense.
Full plates/reps works pretty nicely, actually for squads/soloing respectively.
OP, my Sentinel ak.0 fitting is 1x Cx Energiser, 1x Cx Damage Mod and either 2x Cx Plate and 1x Rep, or the reverse. 'Steelmine' Boundless (cos I ain't skilling HMG until there's a laser one! and I've still got a few Boundlesses left from Mauler) and an IASMG. I usually fit a Core Locus, although I'm tempted to switch to an Allotek Flux.

Annoyed the Gal Sentinel doesn't have the most base armour (isn't the Gal supposed to be high armour, low shields?), why does the Amarr heavy have more base armour?
But still, this and my dren heavy are my go-to fits.
Gal is supposed to rep tank - which is the reason for your inbuilt rep (which I admit is worthless, but hey). You've got a higher armour ceiling than we have, and a more versatile armour tank too.

I'm an Amarr purist at this point, but this guy convinced me to spec Caldari Sentinel (at least to level one)
All he needs is some decent cores and he can actually build a stupidly effective suit...
fwiw, my preferred STD fit comes to 25k (my fitting skills are maxed);
ADV Energiser (I'm not going to be able to fit a proto even when I unlock them, not enough CPU) PRO extender (gives a little buffer which is nice) PRO Armour Repper (means my armour is actually useful. And my suit has seven less armour than Jason's cos like I said, rubbish cores)
MH-82 Some kind of grenade I think I have a toxin here? Can't remember if I could fit a sidearm.
But basically these heavy suits are stupidly versatile; I'm considering getting the Min Basic for that movement speed (though I need kincats first...)
Also I forgot about my FG fitting!
IAFG (I like to solo tanks and this is what it takes, prof 3) IASMG (best sidearm hands down. Jason will claim it's the MGMG, don't listen he's lying) Lai Dai Packed (people like to complain that these are useless now. Well, I only got them in 1.8 and I can't imagine how devastating they'd be if I still had three)
2x Cx Extenders (unlike my HMG fitting I need shields; even without the energiser they regen reasonably fast, and I've found them more useful than damage mods) 2x Cx reppers (regenerating buffer is critical, and more important IMO than sheer tank) 1x Cx plate (this lets me tank a hit from an MLT railgun)
I can 1v1 Sicas by standing in the street in front of them with this guy.
Most people aren't good enough to hit me twice before I forge them to death.
I will need to do the maths, though, and see if damage mods give me more bang for my buck.
All I can say about proto sentinels is that they have truly obscene fitting capabilities. I have never spent a point in fitting optimisation in my life and everything fits anyway.
