My current tactics: a) Flux (if possible), and then try to mass drive. b) Submachine gun and mass drive.
Tips? The MD is really, really not a 1 on 1 weapon. It's best used in enclosed spaces like the underground of the Gallente Research Facility, or in corner battles between forces. Basically, what you want to do is pick off people when they're low on health and retreating around a corner- a few Assault MD rounds will render their escape attempt useless and prevent any revives. Ideally your team should involve a few HMG heavies to chew enemies down to size.
When you find yourself in a 1 on 1 situation, you're best off using the SMG and forcing the enemy to retreat, at which point you can use the mass driver to finish them off around corners and behind cover.

Learn to use the ladder target correctly. Never use ADS. And ignore people saying its not a 1v1 weapon. It will obliterate most people 1v1 you just gotta know how.
Practice makes perfect. :) True story. C always wins in a 1vs1 with his MD I mean, I'm not saying it's unusable 1v1, but saying you can win with it in 1v1 doesn't make it an ideal 1v1 weapon. I've soloed tons of people with nothing but a plasma cannon and a flaylock pistol. Heck I've purely melee'd people to death when I ran out of ammo for said plasma cannon. But that doesn't make it a good tactic. The point is, running around trying to get in MD vs Rifle straight up gunfights is a recipe for frustration.
Also, AMD best MD. That splash radius is simply too good- something like 7m base + the MD Ops bonus = huge, huge area denial.

Thats all you have though, the splash damage is crap on it. The regular mass driver has a decent splash and enough damage to be competitive. The assault will net you a lot of assists but rarely any kills. Whereas the normal varient deals 110+ damage on splash as opposed to 70+ splash on the assault. You get more rounds in the assault mass driver but that bonus is negated when you have Rapid reload 5. If you can aim with the MD, (and I mean properly aim, getting the rounds at their feet.) then the assault will only hinder you. It's not a matter of aim, it's a matter of area denial. When you're trying to assault a position, you're not necessarily in a hurry- the point of the Assault MD is its supreme damage projection around corners. What you want to do with the Assault MD is to catch those people sitting back from the corner or deep behind cover at very low health trying to regen. I find I get more kills with the AMD using it in the correct situations- very few people back off far enough to escape AMD rounds, whereas most people will back off far enough to avoid normal MD rounds.
Yes, the MD is superior for direct fire, when you can see the enemy. But when you're trying to maximize your ability to snipe around corners and deny entire rooms, the AMD is vastly superior. Since the MD is outclassed as a direct-fire weapon by any of the normal bullet hoses, area denial is its true purpose. When you can be shooting at peoples' feet, you could be using a weapon with better DPS. The point of the mass driver is non-LOS DPS.

Lots of los to red there If you're trying to solo targets with just a mass driver, then yes, I'd absolutely use the regular mass driver.
Really though, for pub Mass Driving, I'm a huge fan of the Min Commando. I have an alt with Min Commando V, and it's just definitely the best suit for soloing with a mass driver. You can combine it with either the CR or ACR depending on your personal preference, and use the rifle until you force enemies to back off. When they try to run, you catch them with the AMD. It works brilliantly, especially if you can get ahold of some high ground or are fighting in a city.
