So after taking on board a very new player to our corp to help teach him the ways of dust. I told him that if he has any questions, just ask and I'll be able to explain it. The things he asked reminded me of what it was like when I started. Things that outright confused me when I started but have got to accept. Heres a list of little things new players dont understand:
- What are the controls?
- How do you switch to equipment?
- Why are players higher up the scoreboard with less kills?
- Whats an uplink?
- WTF is a forge gun?
- Whats classes as a Hybrid - Blaster?
- Why do I get warpoints for my weapons when I go near a supply depo?
- Whats a triage unit?
- Why cant I change my suit at the top of the fittings circle?
- Whats a nanohive?
- Why cant I fire the swarm launcher?
- What does ADS sensitivity do?
- Whats a CRU?
- There are cloaks?
- Why cant I jump over things sometimes but at other times I can?
- Why is a friendly shooting me with a yellow beam?
- How do you get vehicles?
- WTFSAUCEGIANTLASERBEAMSOFDEATH?
- Why cant I get in a friendlies vehicle?
- How do you squad up?
- Why cant my team hear me on my mic?
- Whats the redline?
- Why cant I activate the Intertia Dampaner sometimes?
- Whats salvage and how do I get it?
- Can I sell the salvage?
- Why can players kill me when I've got into a turret?
- How do you get an orbital?
And so it goes on. CCP that new player experiance of yours is in a very bad way.

On one hand: yes, sure, Dust should have a much more comprehensive introduction.
On the other hand: I figured out literally all of those things for myself without asking anyone, within a week of starting to play Dust (I started last June). Buff basic deductive reasoning and the ability to read before blindly jumping in?

They won't. Dust needs more interactive tutorials with step by step guides and mock battles with a checklist before new players are placed into Academy.

The answer to "why he cant get into friendlie vehicles" is that either the tank driver is the usual twatt with just the large turret fitted. Or for LAV's and dropships its usually that the person who called it in dont want to wait a minute until his ride unlocks for people who aint from his squad or he just doesnt want a blueberry to sit inside of the thing for the whole match.

Your annoyed tone has been noted. There's usually very good reasons for driving off without a passenger. I've had a passenger for far too many suicide LAV runs, or had my LAV carjacked while I was still covering it with remote explosives..."it's going to be a short ride buddy."

Your question is phrased such that literally however I answer, you will refute my point in one direction or another. Either "you can't expect stupid kids to figure it out, you ageist" or "you can't expect older people to figure it out, you durned kid". By your logic, no one could possibly be expected to figure out how Dust works, and obviously that's not the case.

I remember running out of ammo and not knowing how to get more. Once you know about hives it seems obvious but if you don't, it is not. I didn't have a mic so it took me quite a few games to figure out that some blue glowing things were uplinks and some gave me ammo.

I didn't have a mic so it took me quite a few games to figure out that some blue glowing things were uplinks and some gave me ammo. The nanohive minimap icon is pretty clearly an ammunition symbol. If you look in the market, even in the militia section, nanohives list an "ammo resupply rate" stat.
The fact the uplinks, and the uplink symbol, come up on the respawn screen, is a pretty clear indicator of what they do. Similarly, if you look at the market, they clearly reference a spawn time stat.
Not to mention the fact that you could just read the market descriptions of things.
I'm not saying Dust's NPE is good, but... damn, guys, it's just not that hard.

Just so you know, I'm not saying that the tutorial system shouldn't be improved, just that it only took me a good week to know the ins and outs of the game, which is common for most games.
When Dust becomes extensively larger in roles and skills, they will have to remake the tutorial system, again. |

The only question from that entire list that passed through my mind when I first started playing was "What are the controls" and I just checked the config options to find out
What the hell is wrong with people that they dont just instinctively know some of this stuff from other games or put 2 and 2 together like jumping being affected by your stamina

I'd mock, but:
A) If it wasn't for experience with EVE I probably wouldn't have known enough about the general principles of the game to find my way around the various features.
B) I have friends who are intelligent gamers who would probably ask me these questions early on (not that I would recommend this game to them...yet). Though part of that is because even the simplest game these days has a more in depth tutorial and instinctive UI/Design principles.

I started last May and back then, the tutorial system was completely different, as in there wasn't one and it was just a giant ass email with pop up screens telling me what things were in detail. Since then, they've ditched ALL of that and put in a "tutorial" (read with extreme sarcasm) system. I honestly felt the pop ups did a much better job than the bullshit they have now.
I'm not saying it took me long to learn this game but we also have to understand that this UI is a ****** UI. I design UIs for a living and this one is completely non-intuitive. We can claim it is all we want but when you use a tool for months, anything seems intuitive.
I remember one of the most confusing things for me in the market system was the skillbooks. This was before the skill tree bubbles. Skills were just stacked in one long list. I couldn't understand why the green numbers told me 12,000 sp to get the skill but it was saying I'd have to pay 149,000. I eventually realized they were requesting completely different values from different types of currency but **** if that was clear at all.
Also, I've seen a few newberries pop up and asking questions in local (as delightful as that is if you don't have a keyboard) and I've witnessed some pretty horrible bashing/less than useful help from the community. Not all of it mind you, but if they're confused, getting insulted and not having a fun time...damn straight they're going to leave.

Lol based on the conversations we had about your phenomenal classmates, that's a surprising comment. People vastly overestimate the average attention span and deduction ability of most of the younger generation today. As someone that has to code basic applications/programs to be used by upcoming employees recently graduated, it literally steals years away to have to deliver 400 hours of my life to someone that can't figure out a more than 2 step process.
That being said, I know this gaming community is pretty broad. I think the tutorial system can definitely be improved, mostly through the UI. After that, there is a certain level of helping hand that I feel just proves they aren't the kind of player dust is looking for.
