- Create squad
- Squad Finder
- Name Squad "GAMEMODE, NEED TANK SUPPORT"
(Where "GAMEMODE" is whatever you plan on playing)
A squad like this snatched me up last night off the public finder and ultimately ended up with myself and two other strong tankers working together against other teams with coordinated armor/air support.
Here's my drunken hip-pocket list of good etiquette for squad leading for tankers:
-Be teamplay oriented - There's nothing worse than a squad leader who isn't actively leading. Even without voice comms, you should be great at conveying a message with the squad orders - the defend/rally/capture/attack orders are there for a reason! Don't just sit there and wait for "your" orbital to come up. Your job is to keep me alive, my job is to keep your squad alive and help you win the game.
-Use the Squad "Defend" order on tanks - More warpoints for you, more warpoints for your tank support. Mutual benefit = long term victory... If you have multiple tankers or a team on the ground, cycle the order around and spread the love to keep everyone happy.
-Understand the Gamemode - If you're queueing for ambush and you fill up off squad finder, make sure you didn't get 5 other tankers. At least three of them will be upset when they are quota'd out of calling into a gamemode that only allows two vehicles. A general rule of thumb is 1 per ambush squad, 2-3 per dom/skirm squad. If I'm consistently hitting quota because of too many squad members vehicles, I'm going to leave the squad.
-Communication - is amazing. If I join a random squad and the squad leader is active on voice comms and using his squad orders, I'm a happy camper. Toss that attack order on an enemy tank and tell me "Hey Mud, you've got an enemy shield rail tank north of you near the Charlie CRU" and I'm swooning in my tanker boots. Teamplay wins games, and post 1.6 it no longer requires 10 million ISK worth of biomass to do it.
-Be respectful of skill gaps - Not every tanker is going to have proficiency 5 in every applicable skill. You'll inevitably end up with someone who is "just" a militia tanker responding to your tank request. Treat them with respect and help them where you can (this applies to experienced tankers and squad leaders alike) - Everyone of us started with 500k SP and a dream, don't go squashing other's just because you achieved yours!
-Don't be afraid to help out - Dropping an orbital to help your friendly tanker win a fight against an enemy tank is sure to net brownie (and war) points. Also, if your tanker is clearly outnumbered by enemy tanks, consider making a militia tank fit to get in there and help him/her out, or perhaps a forge/swarm fit if you're uncomfortable tanking. If the cost is of concern, just consider that your friendly tanker's tanks are as expensive or more expensive than a basic militia fit!
-Fight fire with fire
-Have fun! - Seriously, if you're yelling at your TV more than once in a blue moon, you're doing it wrong....
-Profit?!
