Salutations!
You players are bringing back such memories for me. I've only been playing Dust since about mid April 2013. Yep, it takes THAT long to get the hang of operating that thing.
It's not the native durability of the Dropship that makes your trips damage-free. Unlike the LAV or HAV, the DS is operating almost outside its structural abilities. It's probably as heavy as an empty unmounted HAV body (before you put the guns on your HAV), and it's not made to "fly" (no aerodynamic material or shapes). So it's a small house being levitated 10 stories off the ground (by magnetic propulsion technology of SOME sort, I guess). ...So when a "house" just "taps" the side of a skyscraper, THERE WILL BE SERIOUS damage to the house).
CCP won't change the mechanics of the Dropship (too many players would riot against them if they did, believe it or not). Have paitience, because paitience is the only solution you have. By the time we worked our way up to earn greater shielding and more armoured modules, the vet players pretty much developed enough of a touch with the controls that we're NOT RELYING on the shield/armour bonuses to avoid collision damage or landing damage. It's the agility of HANDS that gets us the quick light landing and minimal injury when we bump into stuff.
I know.... that's not the response you want to read. But sadly that's the way it is. The dropship doesn't perform or survive well at all,... until the player has REALLY put in a ton of time, repetition, and self control. Once you've got the agility of hand, it is seriously hard for things like scraping a pylon or landing too fast to cause you to lose your vehicle (you compensate fast enough to cushion the blow...once you've got the skill).
Until then, kind of like everything in Eve Dust 514, you have to suffer and lose ISK. |

I won't disagree with you much on your DS opinion, Varjac, except wherever you try to relate the DS to any sort of airplane or helicopter. LOL, it's just not "flying"! It's not using air pressure-vs-body weight like an airplane (fixed-wing machine) or helicopter (variable-WING machine) does. Hence we'll never get "pilot-logical" control layouts or "pilot-logical" HUD cues from CCP for it. (Besides, it's just a support vehicle in the game...not supposed to be given Movee-star level buttons and features).
But I do agree with your extension of the problem to HAVs. LAVs seem to have snuggled in well, mechanics-wise, but CCP already knows the HAV has to be, umm,... "tweaked". (WHAT AN UNDERSTATEMENT, right?)
...Still, with all the fighting and smoke that finally cleared regarding the camera-views, animation, and owner-protection of the precious dropship vehicle, CCP DEFINITELY won't do any messing with mechanics or behavioral characteristics for you. You should have read all the posts in the early days of Patch 1.2.... the yelling and screaming was a madhouse!
The way the Dropships are NOW, is likely the way they will stay, with VERY LITTLE change in 2014. |
