This is going to get moved in the locker room, but I need a quick answer from a dev, out of curiosity:
What type of game was World of Darkness even going to be? I don't think it was ever really stated. As in, genre.

I always heard MMORPG
I'll start my own war, with hookers, and blackjack!
In fact forget the war and the blackjack.

It was meant to be an MMORPG with the design philosophy that utilizes permadeath.

Hearing this my disappointment that it was cancelled just shot up, character permadeath is why I was interested in Wizardry Online and its something Id like to see more games implement

sandbox MMO, it's a shame it got cancelled even if it wasn't my taste in games(I have no idea and don't know much about the game in general) but the market really only has one true sandbox mmo and that's eve(only really in null sec). some have sandbox elements but the market is dominated by wow clones and that's sorta sad.

From what I have heard (my wife was avidly following this game only to get more and more disappointed in its prospects the more I played Dust) permadeath would not be for instances of say "dungeon crawling" and ******* up and getting killed in PvE or even normal PvP, but would be for stuff like Masquerade violations. Princes of cities would be players. The game would be mostly metagame and politics which is why CCP seemed the fit to make the game.
Most tankers are like sand people. They frighten easily, but will quickly return...and in greater numbers.

As an alternative to Dungeon & Dragons the game caught on fire in the 90s. IRC is littered with informal communities that avidly play and run complex player/GM organized cities. If the avatar based MMO had been launched it would have filled a majorly open niche with a strong player base already lined up. I know and met others in that population who only know about New Eden because of their wait for a WoD MMO.
After the walinking-in-station fiasco years back I'm surprised anyone thought CCP could pull it off. Rockstars success with GTA came after a much greater use of capital resources. Captions Quarters and Dust 514 are good examples of CCPs limits at this time.
