I thought I should take this time to discuss one of the numerous fallacies spouted on these forums while discussing game balance. One of these fallacies, is the Continuum Fallacy.
Let's look at a paragraph from the page lined above:
Quote:The fallacy appears to demonstrate that two states or conditions cannot be considered distinct (or do not exist at all) because between them there exists a continuum of states. According to the fallacy, differences in quality cannot result from differences in quantity.
Here's are some examples of the Continuum Fallacy in use:
Quote:"Plasma Cannons are so overpowered right now! Look at the killfeed, and that's literally all you see! It's just Nyain San running amok with KLA-98s and Allotek Plasma Cannons!"
Quote:"Plasma Cannons are stupidly overpowered right now! 80% of the teams in Planetary Conquest consist of nothing but Speed Tankers and AVers running around with Allotek Plasma Cannons!"
Quote:Combat Rifles have definitely become a unicorn and is beyond under-powered! You almost never see them on the kill-feed, and only 5-6 people use them as a main weapon in Planetary Conquest.
This needs a buff so they can become viable again.
These statements would imply that Plasma Cannons are overpowered simply because they have a high prevalence in Planetary Conquest, and because they are seen frequently on the killfeed. It would also imply that Combat Rifles are underpowered simply because they are rarely used in Planetary Conquest, and are hardly ever seen on the killfeed
However we all know this is not the case, and anyone who believes it is the case should probably schedule an appointment with their doctor as soon as possible.
Does this wall of text hurt your eyes? Well here's a TL;DR for you:
Quote:Please refrain from calling an item underpowered or overpowered because of it's prevalence in Planetary Conquest, and how often it's seen on the killfeed.
It's a fallacy.

No denying that..... though it does hit my funny bone that Hardeners were QQed about hard......nerfed......and weren't even the damn problem.
I want 1.6 HAV modules back. Powerful timed reps and similar hardeners...and the ability to passive tank.....mmmmm

The day Nyain San starts using PLC is the day when they increase it's splash to 10 meters and damage to 1000.
That's why Nyain San are such a reliable measure for what's OP, they use it all the time.

Well certainly the Plasma Cannon is underused simply because of the viability to kill someone efficiently, I think basically everyone uses this logic and if you look at the historical graphs of the light weapons on http://dust.thang.dk/market_historycategory.php you will see that the logic is pretty sound in regards to that.
Now...The important part is how one would go about buffing the Plasma Cannon if it were to hypothetically receive one, while some would want it to be a anti-infantry type weapon they might increase the splash radius and splash damage. While others might say that it was always meant to be effective against vehicles increasing the direct damage/travel speed of the shot.
I think the main problem is just the lack of variants on the Plasma Cannon, you see this with the Sniper Rifle in that it probably is more viable to run a charge/tactical variant than it is to run the base variant (I wouldn't exactly know because I am not a sniper) and thereafter it is easier and more balanced to only buff said weapons once more variants have been introduced.

Your examples don't seem to be examples of a Continuum Fallacy. It is simply an invalid argument based on selective sampling.
Because, that's why.
