The original purpose of Dust was not to be mercenaries, the original purpose of Dust was to take a closer look at New Eden and this world they had created. In fact, CCP should remove all traces of the word "Mercenary" from their marketing and such all together. To say that Dust players are mercenaries is shoehorning everyone into one role in this universe. But there are so many more things you can be in New Eden! Even with the limitation of being strictly combat oriented, you don't have to just be a mercenary. Like in EVE, we should be able to be loyalists, freedom fighters, empire builders, bounty hunters, and pirates, not just mercenaries. So far we can be loyalists through Faction Warfare and empire builders through Planetary Conquest, but we should be able to be anything else and really with as little limitation as possible. The game is supposed to be a sandbox, if you can think it than you should be able to do it.
I agree... in part. There's a huge issue with CCP assuming DUST players are mercenaries, as a large number of them are not. Many are businessmen, faction loyalists, alliance leaders, etc. Indeed the name "mercenary" should be struck from DUST's descriptions and marketing. The huge part of the New Eden image is that you can be whoever you want to be, and the same should be for DUST.
However, the OP makes a hugely important point about the value of contracts in DUST. We need them. Not just between EVE and DUST though, but also between DUST and DUST. Any corp should be able to contract a battle out to any other corp, whether they be an EVE corp or a DUST corp (as EVE and DUST corps, are in fact, the same thing, there is no difference in the database). EVE will usually be the master of territory, and I definitely see a future where land is largely held by the giant entities that make up the EVE political landscape, but there shouldn't be anything forbidding a DUST group from taking territory for themselves either.

I would say I have never really been a mercenary in DUST. It's just something that's never occurred in my playstyle.

But again, you're focusing on something we've been shoehorned into, rather than the life we choose to lead.

Yes I am, because that is and always has been the point of the game. It's not mincreaft or painting daisies... It's an F.P.S.!!!! We kill and blow stuff up. Don't loose sight of that important fact.
I never said I didn't blow stuff up. But I fight for my alliance, my space empire. I have no interest in fighting for other factions any more than the game currently forces me to do it to make money. I don't consider myself a mercenary, because when I am in game, I am loyal to my peeps.
Just like many players are loyal to the Caldari faction or something. They would be better described as soldiers than mercenaries.
The importance of this being a sandbox, is as much of the NPC and CCP-determined stuff needs to be phased out, and replaced with letting us do what we want, how we want.

That doesn't even make any sense. Stop trying to tell me I am what I'm not.
