My hdmi connection is failing. for months, my ps3 has been occasionally blacking out. Usually the picture will return after a few seconds but if it doesnt I would just reinsert the hdmi cord in the pack of the ps3 and that would usually do the trick.
However recently I have not been able to get an hdmi connection at all. The TV screen just stays black..
Any advice?

Aside from the basic troubleshooting, try a different hdmi cable, switch to a different HDMI port on your tv. Plug in a different device and see if the problem is still there (might be tv related). Switch to AV cables and see if the problem is still there. |

AV cable works fine.
Different hdmi cables aren't working.
The ps3 does seem to work on other tv's but I still notice the picture blackouts. Although not as frequent as the tv I am having trouble with. So the problem is there and I am guessing its only a matter of time before it stops working with my other tv as well. Could the hdmi port on my ps3 have been damaged somehow?

Since Dust and most ps3 don't support 1080p, try downgrading to the R/Y/G AV cables. Granted you'll lose a little bit of clarity, but shouldn't really affect Dust. I'm pretty sure you can pick them up for less than the cost of fixing your HDMI port. ($20 or so)
I would try the free fixes first though, like Aszazel suggested.
And if the HDMI cord gets pulled on, or yanked it could damage the port on the ps3
Also, how old is your TV? before upgrading to a viera, I was using an older flat screen. I believe my PS3 display settings were cranked up to output in 1080p, but the TV I was playing on was only 720p/1080i so the screen would flash to black typically when switching from warbarge to loading screen.

Could be the port, could be the video card on the PS3, if it's still happening on other tv's WITH a different HDMI cable that's pretty much makes it the PS3 problem unforunately. You can reset the HDMI interface by holding down the power button until it beeps once, then release. It will go through intial video setup again. Also, there are some options in the video settings you can look at, make sure its 16:9 or 4:3 to match the type of tv you have. And if your tv is 720, set the output to 720. cause some tv's try to auto down convert a 1080 to 720 if their max res is 720 and you will get blimps like that. |
