In an effort to enhance both my playing skills and meet other scout players, I'm starting this thread to act as something constructive (post 1.8) as opposed to all the negative threads I've seen so far asking for changes/buffs.
I guess what you should include are:
- How much SP have you spent on scout skills/ related things.
- What type scout you currently are playing as (and your suit).
- Your fit (if you want to share).
- Playstyle/roles/fits
I'll start by saying that I'm chronically low on ISK (funny...but true) . Having invested over 8 million points in skills, I believe I have a half decent fit as a (now) proto Caldari Scout. In retrospect, Caldari scout isn't the best offensive suit, but damn it looked cool and I wanted one. Everyone knows what a Caldari scout is supposed to do....run around, scan, avoid getting hit, etc. What frustrates me is that scouting like this is a royal pain in skirmish (guaranteed deaths) and mediocre at best on domination. These are my two favorite map modes, and it just sucks getting your butt handed to you by a team that has half a clue regarding what to do. So, in an effort to dispel myths and innovate (lol), I'd like to share my experiences as a bricktanked scout.
So apparently this is an "OP" playstyle...scout bricktanking. Not sure what it meant...but I supposed it was loading the scout up with armor and shields and just flanking the enemy. After some significant experimentation, I concluded that this is not OP, and it is damn difficult to play as.
There's a fine line between becoming an assault and staying as a scout. If you dip too much into becoming an assault, IE playing extremely aggressively, relying heavily on speed and chance to land you in a favorable position to take on heavies/brick tanked mediums, you will lose. There's simply nothing in a scouts weaponry (except shotgun, but that really isn't great for a brick tanked scout anyways...since you lack speed or dampening) to deliver the damage that you need. It's like walking a tight rope, and it will cost you. If you attempt to engage a group of enemies even with friendlies supporting you, there's a high chance that the group will a) realize that you're an easier kill and focus on you, b) panic and attack you. Both scenarios are bad.
So...a slight variation was needed. THE SCAVENGER BRICKTANK SCOUT...engage in medium range! The scavenger bricktanked scout effectively does nothing well. But it does offer a very safe, low loss, low-mediocre gain method of playing. It's pretty nice if you're low on ISK or are attempting to bump your KD.
Caldari Proto Scout: 3x complex shields. 1x enhanced shields. 1x complex plates. 1x enhanced armor rep. 1x automatic combat rifle (lvl 4)/any other combat rifle. 1x submachine gun. 1x cloak, nanite injector (or whatever you want). 'Nades (nuff said).
It's horrific, the scout purists are crying right now, but hey, it had to be discussed.
THE GOOD: -With around 550 total HP, you'll feel safer than before about running expensive stuff. -It's much harder to get taken out, much much harder I might add. You wouldn't believe it, but those extra points really do help. -It'll let you take on heavy and medium suits comfortably at a good range. -It'll help you win most scout-scout encounters if you are careful about not running into invsi-Gallentes.
THE BAD: -Very conservative playstyle. -Somewhat boring/ lower yield. -Requires constant thinking/placement. Misstep = 1 more suit lost.
The name suggests that this fit requires you to "scavenge" kills. That is, a lot of flanking/circling. I had the most success with this suit destroying enemy logis. As logis put down equipment, I followed close behind and destroyed the uplinks. After that, I engaged the enemy logis. It also became easy to get enemy heavies, and brick tanked mediums. The key diff between this and a regular scout is that there is no objective for you. You rely solely on opportunism and situational awareness, which means that you won't be helping your team that much.
It's imperative that you engage at a medium distance with full stamina. Anything more or less is disastrous. With this fit, it's important to know what region you're going to be scouting in, because establishing correct engagement distances and sight lines will prevent you from entering a bad engagement situation. Retreat is never an if...it's a must if needed.
Ideally, if you have another pure scout watching your back, you'll be safe from counter-scouts. However, this fit is self sufficient, it has an armor rep and you should be fine in most scenarios. With careful play, it'll allow a good player to extend his reach far into enemy territory (effectively becoming...a "light assault"), and pick off foolhardy/ rushy foes.
MY CONCLUSION: Boring/ not the way scout should be done, but engaging at medium range whilst moving quickly works out pretty well. Cloaks help player set up for the right type of engagements.
OP? No....quite far from it in fact.
THIS IS NOT THE ONLY WAY A SCOUT SHOULD BE PLAYED, BUT IS AN ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE NOT WISHING TO BE JUMPING OVER ENEMY PLAYERS 24/7.
Best round so far with this tactic...200k gain and 0 deaths . |

I like to be more of a non-combat guy. 2 basic fits for this:
Amarr scout, with a scrambler rifle, cloak, uplinks, kincat, and profile dampener (rest of the fit doesn't matter)- mostly just runs around putting uplinks where they're needed, or doing stuff in more open objectives. Has a codebreaker on it when more slots are available.
Minmatar scout with a combat rifle, knives, cloak, and profile dampener. (again, the rest doesn't matter)- this is the one I use for more enclosed or urban areas. Sneaks in to quickly hack, with the ability to cut its way in and out of tight spots.
I'm from the weird side of the internet

I don't know how much SP it all totals but I have Gal scout at level 5, precision enhancement to 5, profile dampening to 5, and range amplification at 5. Biotics are at 5, kin cats to level 3.
I most often run adv. level gal scout
1 complex shield extender 1 complex precision enhancer 1 complex profile dampener 1 enhanced armor plate 1 enhanced reactive plate
Remote explosives Adv. cloak
Adv. assault CR M 209 assault SMG
I started running scout a couple months before 1.8 to try it out because I knew it was going to be OP come 1.8 and I absolutely fell in love with it and could not fathom why scout players thought it was so UP. I run mostly slayer scout using my stealth and passive scanning to set up my kills. Before 1.8 I used remote explosives much more, now its just position myself behind a guy or 2 and gun them down with the ACR. I should start skilling into shotguns but its almost too easy and my SMG does damn well in CQC.

I play 4 suits all built the same with different links (one has proto stable)
as for modules have never changed 1.7 - 1.8 (just applied 1 more damp)
3 of my fits cost 8k and the one with a proto link is around 13k

On this main, I have a Cal Scout to lvl 1. Pretty good thus far. I've only used it once though and died due to IRL distractions.
On my scout alt, I rock a Gal scout to lvl 3. I have enough SP to go lvl 5, but there are LP Gk.0's after all, and I still have core skills to attend to. That includes Kincats to 3, dampening to 4, and armor to 5. It's quite fun, and death seems like a memory.

@OP, I have a almost the same fit using the Minmatar Advanced scout. Only three shield extenders and lower level plate/repper, but sits around the 550EHP mark and gets used as a light assault for taking/holding objectives. The Assault CR is a beast if you get the drop on someone.
More generally, 19M skill points. After 1.8 my only points in dropsuits is proto Minmatar scout. About 7M in weapons, and the rest in dropsuit upgrades.
Normal fit is: M/1 advanced scout Complex shield extender Advanced precision enhancer
Complex profile dampener Advanced range extender
Assault CR ZN-28 Nova Knives Flux Grenades
Advanced Cloak Compact Nano Hive
EWAR capabilities isn't as good as the GAL/CAL suits, but is good enough compared to pre-1.8. Just need range and precision to 5 (4 and 3 respectively) and then I'll have all of my scout skills maxed out.

LOLFWARMY, do you have any idea who your CEO is? If not, I have some very eye-opening stories for you.
Anyway, I have about 30M invested directly into scout-type things.
Lv5 Dropsuits: Caldari Scout Gallente Scout Minmatar Scout
Almost all my scout fittings are slayers of some sort, although the methods vary by suit.
Caldari: Precision, Precision, Precision: My go-to ADV Cal scout has <400 eHP, and two Precision Enhancers. Seeing almost everything lets me focus more on looking out for the occasional Gal scout that I can't see.
Gallente: First Priority: Beat all the scans. Second: Light brick. My Gal scout fittings are unscannable while cloaked and require very specific countermeasures to scan while uncloaked, rest usually consists of low tier armor plates and shield extenders.
OR
1) Straight up brick tank 2) Assault Mass Driver 3) Lotsa hives 4) ??? 5) Profit
Minmatar: Hack n' Slash: KCs, a codebreaker, precision, and Nova Knives. Hack everything, hide in the shadows, and shank anything that gets near the letters. You don't see them much, but the cloak has made Nova Knives practical and legitimately useful. Heavies die in one charged attack, medium frames rarely even need a charge swipe, and scouts are dead before they can drop their cloak. |

I run a G scout on my 2nd pg, Il Gallo Cedrone. 9 millions SP Damp and range level 5, precision just 1, scout suit level 4 (600k sp to proto ) Biotics 5, red drugs 3 and green drugs 1 SG 5, prof 2.
Usually I run shields on high slots Enh kincat Complex range ext 3rd slot used for Bio / Tank / Damp according to what I need. Not always running a cloack, i use it more as a 2nd complex damp. REs, nanite injectors or hives. I have some tanked fit when i use CR instead of SG but I don't like armor tank in general, moreover on a scout. Armor tanking slows you down and has bad regen. Love the bonus of this suit, skilled in 1.6. In 1.7 I used this character more than my 1st because of the scannerina, tanks and the protobears. Nothing used to beat this suit in getting at the back of a proto-supertanked-tripledamagemodded-gallogi relying too much on his scanner. Now you can do this in more ways then before, and this is good. (even if I think scanners were nerfed a bit too much.. maybe increasing the angle could be nice?) Blowing tanks was (is) another good stuff I enjoy a lot (now i get a loooot of point doing that! Plasma cannon, flux nades and REs for the Blow!
On my 1st pg i just skilled adv C scout. My 1st suit is a cal logi, i still don't have put sp on "scout abilities"... getting them in 2-3 weeks. ATM I'm using the suit as a light assault
3 Complex shield exts 1 basic plate 1 armor repairer Adv RR or AR compact hive nanite injectors (I can run wiyrkomi if I use a GEK-38!!!)
OMG ... 50 hp/s regen... I said it all!! 250 hp less than C assault but I can completely regen my shields in 10-11 secs if completely empty. 1 basic plate doesn't slow me down too much, I can strafe a lot and i can flank in a moment. my radar is good even if I don't use modules and I have lower profile than an assault. And I can use 2 equipments. I'm ******* lovin it!!

Don't know.. maybe it depends more on your playstyle. As it is now the "only" advantages you have in skilling in assault are better ehp and gun bonuses (and i'm running caldari, so..) Running a "light assault" gives you better regen, speed, stamina, profile and a 2nd equipment. From what I've seen so far, my c scout is great at flanking enemies, not so good when you have to face someone 1vs1 if you don't have cover. 250 hp less is something you can feel pretty hard, you're not exactly a face-to-face soldier. But it's amazing if you have a good position and if you can get to cover just for a few seconds. And you will still have better scanner precision, range and profile. I think assault are still better in first line combat... light assaults don't have that ehp you need for that. But maybe just in that. Assault need some love, i think..
thnx for all the fish!

I can be the eyes of the team. A fully fitted eWar Min can have a precision lower than a Gal but higher than a Cal and have range at between the two if using Proto. Thats right, bottom of the leaderboard in the match but the squad is rarely surprised. Backed up with a roaming Cal scout not much can escape.
Alternatively I am the annoying git forcing you to go back again and again to hack the same point. Killing lone players trying to take it back and forcing a bigger push to reclaim. Once you do I slip away, cus my job is done. I've forced them to waste time and a greater portion of infantry to take back 1 point taken by 1 player.

27 Million SP total. Vast majority into my Passive core skills, and around 10mil in weapons. I'm a Minmatar Scout (speccing into Cal scout for my corp on the side)
My fit: http://www.protofits.com/fittings/shared/193/546
Infiltrator and Flanker. With an ACR, I can engage at up to 50m effectively, and use this with a cloak and dampening to effectively flank people. Knives are great for soloing objectives, as I can knife the defender and then hack in 4.67 seconds. Speed is a boon, especially when combined with my stamina regen.
Low on eHP, but anyone who has played Min Scout pre-1.8 will be able to make this work rather well.

Favorite fit for general play: Scout G-1 series, 2xmilitia kincat(I know, wasteful - just discovered the joy of speed) Adv precision enhancer Enhanced sidearm damage mod Adv range amplifier Flux grenades Basic cloak R-9 uplinks TT-Y breach scp in light slot CAR-9 burst scp in sidearm This suit is perfect for my playstyle, which I think of as mainly disruption and infiltration. I can leave uplinks in hard to reach or far flung places, ensuring my team will not be redlined or can force the enemy to fight on multiple fronts when they are holding a point. I can run through an equipment spammed objective packed with reds and drop two flux grenades without breaking stride, destroying valuable equipment and softening up opposition for my squadmates. If I find myself behind an enemy, a headshot with the breach usually gives me enough advantage to win against all but a tanked heavy, while the burst is good for peppering a group of enemies from behind( esp in ambush), causing distraction and disruption in the ranks. And with the mods I run, I have a full time passive scan that works like an active scanner!
My money maker: Scout G-1, 2xmilitia kincat Basic range amp Basic sidearm dmg mod Flux grenades Basic cloak Drop uplink Breach scp Scp

Guess I could drop my own thoughts in here.
For brief info, I am just shy of having 25 million SP, and I've maxed nearly everything I want. My specialty are Gallente scouts with shotguns, submachine guns remote explosives and cloaks, which are at the core of every single fit I have aside a few exceptions for special cases. I am mostly a defensive/infiltration scout, hanging around or pushing towards objectives to hack them and make sure they won't get rehacked to the enemy team. I operate mostly independently of the squad I am working with, taking advantage of the environment to keep myself replenished with ammunition(supply depots, stray friendly nanohives etc.), and rely on my suit to keep myself at full health without being exposed(innate armor repair).
Most of the time I run with a standard Dragonfly scout suit for its cheap price that lets me have 25 million ISK, but this fit pretty much summarizes how I play.
With my fits I rely on good intel, being able to see everyone and react accordingly to various different threats from stray starter fit red dots to major enemy pushes and Madrugars driving around. I've also installed armor plates and shield extenders for a slightly bigger buffer zone when attacking or defending before having to retreat. The kincat negates the speed penalty armor plates provide, keeping me nice and mobile with slightly more health. I also use my remote explosives a lot to lay traps for particularly dangerous enemies, mostly proto logis, heavies with HMGs and large groups. Finally, my profile dampener helps me stay hidden and give me better chances for making successful ambushes(provided my skills actually apply), finishing my fit.
I also have a few other fits, for instance one for very fast hacking at the start of a match, another for AV, and one for countering Caldari scouts.
But in general, all my fits are about independence, mobility and adaptability to various different circumstances, with reliance on superior intel and stealth for ambushing and flanking maneuvers.
Also, you should definitely check out the Barbershop if you haven't, it's where all the scouts hang out to discuss scoutly stuff.
Welcome to the community. o7

Since 1.8 I have had good luck and bad, my min scout doesn't have the pg to make the dream fit I was hoping for ( full shields, reds and a green complex, cloak, knives and a assault cr), so I settled for a real unorthodox fit that's fun lol.

Or I replace my punchers for shields an use 2 codes in the low.
My cal fit is a outside fit either bricked on both sides with a bk cr or usually a rr and mag. Although I have been messing with shields energizers and regulators for open maps and percision and range an a damp in cities but I live longer using a rifle on this scout.
My gal has so many options to list but it has become my new nk suit. Complex fero, two reds and a green, bk nk remotes cloak or two reds two damps a percision an a shield.
Still working on my amar I don't use it much as of late

I specced into a scout that hunts other scouts. All core skills at level 5 so brick tanked scouts lol they die very quickly :) |

keno trader wrote:I guess what you should include are:
- How much SP have you spent on scout skills/ related things.
- What type scout you currently are playing as (and your suit).
- Your fit (if you want to share).
- Playstyle/roles/fits
I've spent 8.4 Million SP by getting Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar Scout Operations all to level 5. 2.8 million SP to get the 3 passive scanning skills to level 5 and another 2.4 Million SP to get Cardiac Regulation and Kinetic Catalyzation to level 5 All other SP allocation benefits other suits I have and is not strictly for Scouts.
I play the bricked tank Gallente with cloak and shotgun (gk.0) I play the EWAR passive scan Gallente with Shotgun and Cloak (gk.0) I play a mixed EWAR/Tank with a Dragonfly Scout (G-I)
I play a roaming Sniper with a Caldari Scout, Sniper Rifle, and Cloak (ck.0) I play the EWAR support Caldari with Mass Driver, Wiyrkomi and Ishukone Gauged Nanohives (ck.0) I play Stealth EWAR Caldari with Combat Rifle and claok (ck.0) I play a brick tanked Caldari Scout with Combat Rifle (ck.0) I play a mixed support/tank Scout (C-I)
I play a Speed Hack Minmatar Scout (mk.0) I play a Sprint/Uplink scout with 3 complex kincats. the LP uplink and Flux uplink (mk.0) I play a Nova Knife+ Pistol sidearm Scout (mk.0) I play a balanced build of sprint speed, damage, and stealth knfier (M-I)
I have about 8 Gallente Scout fittings, 5 Caldari Scout fittings, and 5 Minmatar Scout fittings on this character, plus the fittings for my other suits. There are certain things that each suit excels at and some that they do marginally better at. With certain play styles being more apt for certain situations. I choose my suit on how I want to play or if not doing well, I pick out the best one for the situation at hand.
C-I scout with Laser Rifle is probably one of my favorites right now. Cardiac Regulator in the low, 3 shield mods in the high. nanohive and RE for EQ. I don't run ADV suits. I run STD or Proto. ADV just seem like an ISK sink. Not enough power or versatility as proto, but not cheap enough to die multiple times.
But damn, do I miss my Amarr Assault.
