This game has a lot of machine guns: assault scrambler rifle, rail rifle, assault rail rifle, magsec SMG, plasma(assault) rifle, HMG, SMG, and assault combat rifle. But wait you say, many of the weapons I've mentioned are rifle. And to that I reply: mechanically, they are just machine guns with longer ranges. Much like machine guns, our assault rifles have one mode of fire, fully automatic. An assault rifle is a selective fire (selective between semi-automatic, fully automatic and/or burst fire) rifle that uses an intermediate cartridge and a detachable magazine. Surprisingly, no one has ever taken issue with this? Assault rifle variants should have alternative modes of fire besides fully automatic. They can implement this by allowing for hip fire to be fully automatic and ADS(aim down sights) to switch to an alternative mode of fire. For example: Assault Rifle Hip fire: fully automatic ADS: plasma grenades Rail Rifle & Assault Rail Rifle Hip fire: uncharged, low damage, shorter range, fast rate of fire, fully automatic ADS: Charged, higher damage, long range, low rate of fire, fully automatic Assault Scrambler Rifle Hip fire: fully automatic ADS: semi-automatic with charge shot capabilities Assault Combat Rifle Hip fire: fully automatic ADS: 3 shot burst fire If you are sick of the lack of variety of machine guns to choose from. If CCP listens to this petition, they'll figure out how to do it themselves. It would be terribly lazy to just follow an example given to them to the letter. And as stated, mine was only an example of how they could make assault rifles assault rifles. Honestly, I like your idea more than my example. I like having the ability to change to semi in shooters, for example Crysis, Bf3, or America's Army 3/ AA: PG. But with the amount of health players have in most modern shooters, using semi-auto doesn't make sense, especially when the assault rifles are quite controllable on full auto at most ranges in game, unlike in reality. If such a feature did get implemented it would need it's own key, not a kludgy ADS to switch fire modes mechanic, maybe left dpad?

Yes, assigning an actual button for switching modes of fire is a better idea. I've been told that people prefer fake smiles over the honest expressions of their fellow men. : )
