Gallente artillery tanks = targeted drone strikes. Amarr artillery tanks = sweeping drone lasers Minmatar artillery tanks = conventional artillery cannons. Caldari artillery tanks = Long range missile strikes. |

This would be redundant and put too much stress on the playerbase due to uncontrollable deaths.
They'd still have travel times (especially important for the drones), and they'd be very, very vulnerable to other tanks or dropships at close range. |

Except that you would never be able to do anything about them once you're tank capped, and in a serious match one team always is.
Artillery weapon's aren't exactly great at killing scouts strapping RE's to them, or the commando's pegging them with missiles / plasma cannons at short range. |

Indirect fire, they're lobbed out and either hit the ground dormant making a proximity anti-infantry minefield, or they exploding into their whirling deathiness on the way down. |
