First of all I must confess that the tears are real, I must also agree with another critic, whose name escapes me, that no other book should be mandatory to read barring religious text of course.
For any who have not read the book, I must implore you to read the novel. It's a book of moral judgement, standard wisdom, expectations of the young, and of equality. The best thing about the book is that it does not simply attempt to beat these thoughts into you, no, this novel simply shows you the reality of the world and the undeniable truth of humanity: equality and respect for all. This is a basic understanding, any man can tell you that egalitarianism is virtuous, but how many men can show you why.
So, anytime someone aggravates you simply ask yourself (barring religion), "what would Atticus Finch do?"

Nocturnal Soul wrote:Yeah my teach is reading it to us in class but since you have such an obvious love for the book I'll try not to fall asleep next time she reads. Yeah, I hated it too. I even told my teacher, "This book is boring and it makes it very hard to read". I had to read it eventually so I decided to finally do it since I was behind on my reading. Part I of the book was not interesting(at the time) but I persisted and by chapter XIII I was unable to put the book down, and did so only to eat, go to the bathroom and "unfortunately" sleep. Took the rest of the next day to finish it.
Very amazing and powerful book. It is the type of book one cannot appreciate until they have read all of it and reflected on it.

Sourdough Muffins wrote:They still force you children to read that crap in school? One of the most overrated books of all time. What's wrong with it? I'm actually curious what books you consider to be morally thought provoking and culturally significant. Care to answer the question?

"Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird" I was wondering who'd catch that. I saw it the second I posted and thought to keep it till someone caught on :D

Elijah Sol' Dzusaki wrote:Never read it. When I was in High school, we had the choice to read "To Kill a Mocking Bird" or "Black boy."
I chose Black boy, because we were told that we would only have to read the first half. Unfortunately the first half was still longer. It's never too late to read a milestone in American literature.

Akdhar Saif wrote:Great book. Your thread reminds me of an article that stated people who read are likely to be more empathetic and tolerant of different people. Well they were wrong. I don't live by what I teach . Down with the Huns!

Thokk Nightshade wrote:PS: To Kill a Mockingbird" is an absolutely brilliant novel. Read that first. And, for the love of all things holy, stay away from "Catcher in the Rye" That is the most mindless drivel I've ever endured. Salinger took away hours of my life when I read that crap for an Adolescent Lit class in college. I just read 2/3 of the Wikipedia summary and I wish I hadn't. That was terrible.
