Im using them myself and i know about their strenghts and weakness. The caldari sentinel is probs the only pure shield heavy. The minmatarr heavy is just a abomination due to its rubbish setup which it cant decide if it should put plates or shield extenders on. Anyway i list you a few things where the suit exceels:
-the true solo heavy
it is very good if you dont want to rely on logis to get your HP back. A decent player can defend themself better against encounters which happend shortly after another (due to the possible high shield recharge)
-Inbuild resistances for shields
other heavys like the amarr and minmatarr are bastard childs cause their bonuses are splitted. The caldari sentinel has resistance against blaster weapons and lasers (shotguns,AR,scrambler and laser rifles etc.) which eliminates the shield weakness. This gets topped with the natural resistance vs. combat-HMG's, rail rifles and explosives. (hint you take only 55% explosive damage)
-mobility bonus
the crown goes to the minmatarr heavy in terms of mobility (if you dont use plates). All other heavys are most of the time slower due to plate stacking.
I know that alot of people think that the caldari sentinel seems UP but i can take multiple grenades to the face without caring. Armor based heavys still take 95% damage from grenades which can ruin their day quite easy.

I believe his point was: "Your skills are carrying the suit rather than the suit being decent in and of itself. If you were using a different/better Sentinel, you would do better."
I am fairly sure that is what he meant.

This may come as a surprise to you, but that dual tanking setup is a Minmatar racial characteristic. Though they favor shields, most of Minmatar suits can be armor tanked if so desired. It's sort of the best (and worst) of both worlds. When looking at the Sentinel suit specifically, the bonuses confirm this. Many Mercs like this duality because you get some of the raw hp of armor and the regenerative quality of shields while not sacrificing too much of the speed. Some suits have more armor, some have more shielding (and slots to support full shield setups).
If any suit can be accused of a truly rubbish setup, it's probably the Amarr sentinel that wastes one of its bonuses on shield resistance.

Well, Cloud has used an armored tanked fatsuit for almost 2 years so it doesn't really apply i this case.

Yep, shields have always supported the hit and run style. Using cover and knowing when to retreat is of the utmost importance when using a shield suit

I use both Caldari and Gallente and enioy them both.
It does seem a bit harder to fit the Caldari suit though. |

Amarr have resistance to Caldari and Minmatar weapons (both are armor focused damage)
Minmatar have resistance to Gallente and Amarr weapons (both are shield focused damage)
Their bonuses are not "split"
