The GentlemanGÇÖs Weapon, a comprehensive guide to the Laser Rifle. (in progress)
Foreword : First off, the GÇ£properGÇ¥ spelling is laz0r, so we will be using that terminology from here on out. Second, I am not the best LR user out there, so any additional feedback from the real experts like lowratehitman, green living, mortedeamor etc.,, are welcome. I also must acknowledge Musta Tornius and his team for their exhaustive work on testing the LR. A few unanswered questions remain post-1.8 but they have done a very impressive job so far.
The LR is easily one of the most unique weapons in Dust; fun to use, hard to master and very skill intensive in many ways. Ever since I saw it called GÇ£the gentlemans weaponGÇ¥ by Redbleach Lesangiant, IGÇÖve also always had this image in my mind that it was the preferred weapon of an aristocratic gentleman officer of the Empire. As itGÇÖs such a beautiful weapon {link??} ItGÇÖs hard to argue otherwise. Despite being nerfed several times, It has a fanatical (no pun intended) or cult following in Dust that no other weapon can match.
Why is it so revered? While the challenge and fun of using it are great, what really drives people to master the weapon is its awesome potential. No other light weapon can match the LRGÇÖs raw power and ability to quickly kill multiple enemies. To wit:
Musta Tornius wrote: We do know there is no damage cap on the laser. At least not one that is achievable. It was the unquestioned king of the battlefield for significant portions of beta. There was a persistent conditioned response in many beta veterans to run like hell the second they heard that unmistakable deep hum and saw the beam flash by. I know I always hear Graham Chapman yelling GÇ£Run away! Run away!GÇ¥ {link} in my head when someone is mowing down people with the LR.
Introduction: Why doesnGÇÖt everyone use it if itGÇÖs so amazing?
What keeps laz0rs in check (besides that spawn of Satan himself, the Rail rifle... though it seems to have fallen out of favor) is the degree of difficulty involved in actually applying the full damage output effectively. This is no scrubs best friend, spray and pray weapon we are using here. If you donGÇÖt know how to use the LR you will get killed (or kill yourself!) early and often. As I mentioned before, Musta Tornius and Team Fairy DUST have done a far better job of testing and outlining the detailed mechanics of the weapon than I ever could. You can read it HERE {link}. My goal is not to be excessively technical and focus more on the practical aspects of actually using the LR. We will go over how to correctly fire the weapon, proper positioning, and finally touch on suit fittings at the end, where some of the more technical stuff will also be discussed. There are two things every LR user needs to know/master to be effective: Preheating and Positioning.

Fair enough, though I wouldn't exactly call you the "target audience" of the thread, lol.

Personally I think the LR's damage amplification should work off it's heat level. Until then I will continue to use it on Caldari suits. At 80-100 meters nothing can hurt you enough to strip off the shields and by the time the LR has cooled down you're already regenerating health. I'll just cover my eyes in the fitting screen. The baby-blue and holy-gold on the same suit just doesn't make any sense at all.
We Amarr are all about holy light and constant application of unrelenting force.
Personally, I love the mechanic, it makes it unique. Burst firing at maximum heat is kinda dull. This way you have to work for it.

The problem is that the holy light of justice seems to be low on battery. Every couple of seconds you have to get back into cover and wait for the almighty power of the divine to catch its breath. I think it'd be more appropriate to see our zealous templars charge the enemy in the open field with bright fervour glowing from their eyes and (the cooling partition of) their weapons.
Perhaps I can interest you in a scrambler rifle? Turning a corner and OHK a medium frame with a charged shot sounds like what you are looking for.

Brought it back. This may or may not have anything to do with my ongoing campaign to get Rattati to make an officer LR and name it the "Demonsbane's" BTH-71 Laser Rifle

Don't worry about that, should you find yourself playing between the hours of 11pm-1am eastern US time you might just get your face melted by yours truly. But, being realistic here, purely in terms of the hours in the day I could possibly play I have no chance even if I were Alldin Kan or Regnyum.

I have always wanted to use the [advanced or prototype variants of the] nanohives which restore both armor and ammo but I see on protofits that it takes a lot of resources compared to the other variants. I have yet to level up the nanocircuitry skill to 5 but I will do so when I am able to. Do you think it would be a good idea to use such nanohives[like compact nanohives] on an amarr assault suit over the ones solely meant for ammo?
Edit:I was mistaken, the compact nanohive restores armor and ammo. Though I might start using it more, I still think the highier tiered nanohives of the same type are much better overall as they have more nanites.
Correct. I use dual ammo/armor hives on my Amarr assault suits. Unlike the ScR, for example, which is very efficient with ammo, the LR obviously is not considering you waste about 20% of it preheating (or more).

Briefly, I didn't like it. The spool up annoys me. I've been using the SMG since beta, so I'm comfortable with it and have it specced out pretty well. Really people should use what they are most comfortable with.
More specfically to your question though, my personal style, as you can see with my primary Commando setup, is to offset the weaknesses of my weapon pairings. The magsec is a longer range rail weapon, I don't need that paired up with the LR. If the target is outside 50-60m, they are getting one thing and one thing only: hot laz0r to the face.
The big problem for me (and likely not just me) when using the LR is when people get inside optimal range. That's where the SMG wins out, and as an armor-based weapon it also works well finishing off the people who lose their shields bum rushing me.

I do think the smg is much better than the magsec smg in cqc. I used to use the breach submachine gun because I am quite inaccurate with the normal submachine gun. I like the magsec smg because it is faster than the breach submachine gun but it is not as fast as the normal submachine gun. For me, the extra range is just a nice perk of the weapon.
I used the breach SMG for a while myself. It shares the same problems as most of the other breach weapons, the ROF is a little too slow and so the effective DPS is less than it should be.

Good observation. A few months ago i would say wait on it until you max your cores and such, and TBH maxing cores has always been the way to go (to level 4 at least). But, with Rattati seemingly making actual progress in restoring shield tanking as a viable option, I'd say it's reasonable to go to level 2-3, which is also where you can unlock Viktors upcoming officer LR, should you ever get one.
Higher than that is definitely not worth it. I actually don't have any weapons to prof 5, I think I have the CR and SMG to 4, and about 5 others, including the LR, to level 3. Omnisoldier FTW. (That's actually one of the old logi schools of thought from beta, we should be a jack of all trades to really support the team in any situation that may arise.)

Did some further testing of short-range damage output. Looks like you now do 100% damage to shields as close in as 2m. (at point-blank range it drops to like 98%)
Now, that's not 120%, so it represents about 83% efficiency; Full damage still doesn't kick in until further out, but it's more like 40-50m instead of the old 60-70m.
Will update the main body later, may need to do some further confirmatory testing to make sure the armor/shield difference remains consistent. Don't see why it wouldn't but always best to be sure. Still, looks like you could still use the LR to get rid of shields and then finish off armor with an SMG at basically any range now.

Personally Ive never used the flaylock so it's hard to say. It's been a bit lackluster since it got nerfed into the Stone Age last year (saw that coming and so never specced into it), but I guess it would be fine if it's something you ordinarily use and have success with.
Realistically, as long as you are comfortable with it, most any sidearm should be fine. Magsec might be a little odd since it's also a long range gun and you'd be better off trying to offset the weakness of the LR with something better at close range (always toyed with the idea of a LR/shotty commando but never actually did it).

Btw CQC dmg has been buffed a bit right? Its not quite as pathetic in CQC as I remember, though still not a close range brawler weapon, of course.
Yep. I never really got around to doing any comprehensive testing before I basically stopped playing, but from what I could tell, it does 2-3x the damage it used to (to shields at least). up close.
Originally it was meh closer than 50m and totally useless inside 30m, there was essentially an 75% damage reduction at that range. You'd do about 30% damage to shields at 30m.
Currently you do 100% damage to shields at 40m... still a reduction from the 'base' 120% but not bad. I never tested armor damage but assuming they just shifted the damage/range curve to the left and widened the optimal instead of completely changing the thing altogether, it should look something like this:
(these numbers are all very much approximate and rounded off)
30m or less: 80% shield, 60% armor (inside 5-10m it drops off a little more)
40-50m: 100% shield, 75% arrmor
So, still not amazing in CQC but nothing to sniff at. I'd still switch to my SMG inside 30m pretty much every time, but more so because their shields should be gone by then.

Viktor is a mad genius.
The whole point is that it never overheats, but AFAIK it has a smaller ammo capacity to compensate. I've never actually used one, if I ever do decide to play again that's #1 on my list of things to do.

Minor edits made because why not. Added a little blurb about the NEG-1.

Dark times indeed. I didn't spec up to proto for probably a year after that because not much point.

The suit skill probably gives more bang for the buck, no pun intended. I'd also basically switch to a sidearm 99 times out of 100 when the target is inside 30m (maybe 40).
There is no cure for rail rifle sickness, unfortunately. Complaining on the forums can help with the symptoms but that's about it.

Arguably the best kind, my friend, but living on the other side of the pond you may not be familiar with our American "I'm in a diabetic coma but it was worth it!" pies that are pretty much candy with a crust... I don't know that many British desserts but maybe you could think of it like a trifle but with chocolate mousse and peanut butter filling instead of that unnecessarily healthy fruit stuff.
Edit: Oh, and with a Reeses peanut butter cup instead of a cherry on top.

Final bump and I've archived the guide for the future release if needed.
If not, well, a CCP FPS without the LR is not a world I want to live in so the point is moot.
