I remember bringing this up a long long time ago, perhaps even as far back as Chromosome or at least early Uprising.
Because your weapons shoot where you look and the camera is positioned at your clones eye level shots effectively come from your head rather than your weapon. This isn't much of a problem for light weapons and sidearms because they mostly sit at upper torso height and most of their shots will come from roughly the same height as your clones head, albeit a little lower maybe.
However, when it comes to the HMG (and also the forge gun incidentally) the weapon is far lower than the clone's head. This results in shots effectively going through low level obstacles that block the line of fire from the weapon but do not block the clone's line of sight.
Now this only happens in certain specific situations and in most cases you'll never see it happen but with things like the brow of a hill, ridges, low fences and those small crates/boxes you might notice that even though you can't see your enemy heavy's weapon, he's still able to shoot you with it.

Wether you can see his weapon or not as long as you can shoot back, which you can, it doesn't really matter.

Happens with a lot of weapons.
One of the reasons high ground cover is the best in the game is because you fire every weapon from your head, resulting in a very small target for the enemy to hit and an incredibly large target for you to hit.
Ironically its also a reason why the HMG is bad in cover-vs-cover situations. The massive spread ensures that more accurate weaponry can actually hit the small target, but only a small % of the HMG's spread can do any damage to it while the rest is absorbed by the cover. |

Also makes a big difference if the heavy is right up next to the low obstacle - he can see all of you, you can only see the top 3rd of him, which doesn't include his weapon. He can still shoot you with a weapon that you can't see. You can't even tell if he's holding a HMG or a forge gun!

No but if you can see and shoot him, he can see and shot you. You should always assume as such.

Is the laser from a laser rifle also emitted from the head? I don't think it is. Can it be blocked if your gun is too low? |

The point from which the laser animates is not its actual point of origin as far as the hit detection is concerned.
The reality is that it does, in fact, come from the head. Basically, the game is lying to you.
The only ones that don't, as far as I'm aware, are non-hitscan weapons like the forge gun and mass driver. |
