Now my Blue Belles are mostly brilliant while the Green crowd I normally run with are obvious geniuses.
However, put a Merc on the side of the Reds and getting their intelligence as high as stupid can be really difficult.
First, I run a Maddy most of the time. When 1.0 dropped, like the bucket of junk it was, shields didn't work not did rail guns in shield tanks. I mean at all. They were death traps and the gun was a come kill me now signal. Although on a Maddy they were alright - kinda. Some problems but not a flare for a suicide tanker. That meant I took my insufficient SP and focused on Armor and one Gun.
Now I have actually branched into both shields and blasters. Wow, life is exciting. Except when ...
You are running your Maddy and the Red AV crowd, not a squad at all, decide to attack in waves. From separate parts of the map. One at a time. With militia gear. Driving around a Dom today and three separate brain dead mathematicians are shooting me with four of those cute little swarmies missiles. They don't hit with enough missiles and rarely take my shields down. If I just sit there yes it can hurt - if others get involved. I rarely do that and didn't this time either.
Math is king, although not in all cities where games are developed I understand, and to take a tank down by yourself requires work. As in team work. Although an invisible scout with 900HP armor and REs can make for a bad day that has only happened a few times. Getting killed by swarmies has happened twice since 1.8. And they were just lucky shots when I was fighting someone else or attempting to recover from a fight.
I repeat to any stupid Red Belles that try to take an armor tank down, by themselves, with swarmies - Merc you are stupid. Next clone you mix up make sure the 'include brain' item is checked. For on. Not off. Even if it does save you 2 ISK.
And so it goes.

As the game is right now, not even a proto swarm or forge could kill you, unless you are being stupid and just sits there. And you sir are a good exemple of the tanker mentality, "I can get a brick tank for dirt cheap, and though I'm the only one in it, everyone else should work as a team to take me down; derp, derp."

Not true kind sir. I do not use cheap tanks. I drive Maddy with ADV gear most times. Adjusted as required by the current battlefield conditions. You are stuck in the mindset that everyone that doesn't speak like you must be wrong and only fit into the mold that you understand. Close minded and of limited knowledge or skill related to the topic of the conversation.
Death by AV is easy in Dust. While it doesn't happen to most tankers with quality gear and good tank knowledge it happens to even the best. This game is not the friendliest game for controlling a vehicle.
First, get stuck on the terrain. While it is better than it has been in the past it still happens way too often.
Second, get stuck on a feature. This is different and happens mostly when trying to reverse out of bad situation. The controls of the Armor tanks are dog slow and horrible. The controls of the shield tanks are faster but are more likely to operate the exact opposite of what you want - turn left and the tank will turn right, ensuring you are even more stuck.
Third, trying to kill the Proto FG heavy with your RG can be humiliating for both as neither weapon will work consistently. For 1.7 they Nerf Hammered the splash damage of the RG to One Meter. Now 1.8 has increased the splash damage resistance (or such) 5% per level for Sentinel suits. 25% protection of the one meter mediocre splash damage. The RG hit detection is so bad that merely twitching the left analog stick will ensure the RG will never hit. Both are limited to the exact same range. While the fat guy is fat and distinctly wider looking I have yet to see an actual hit box size but it doesn't appear to be bigger than any medium suit.
Fourth that goes double for the bouncy scout Swarmies.
Fifth, are you by your self and trying to take down a Tank? If you are - then you need some help. Either join a squad or a math class.
A militia tank is randomly equipped in general. Many are incomprehensible New Belles and I have been asked why their after burner doesn't work on their Sica. Sometimes they may luck onto a combination that will be survivable but mostly they are 2-3 hits and dead.
The last bit of advice for any Merc in any situation is why are you shooting when they are nearly out of range and running away? Fine if they are nearly dead but if they (not only tanks) are close to full health you are only wasting ammunition. For swarmies it is actually worse. Because many times my shield will recover by the time the missiles hit. Rendering them useless.
A good tanker should be moving. Not something I stick to admittedly. A stopped tank is a dead tank ... except in Dust it is nearly impossible to hit a target while moving. Or stopped if the target is infantry and moving.
Welcome to Dust.
And so it goes.

I shoot at tanks with mil swarms. Tanks roll off. Out of the picture for a bit. I have accomplished what I wanted.

Getting a tank or Derp to withdraw might well be all the squad needs to capture the objective or drive back the Reds. I am happy to drive a vehicle away. If they come back with hardeners on that means they will time out soon enough and will be at risk very soon.
As a driver/pilot I will turn away. 100WP is not worth 250-500K ISK. Or it is only rarely.
And so it goes.
