It is less effective now because the remote explosive UI had a bug in it that has been fixed. A dead merc could activate the RE as they were laying dead waiting for a respawn.
Two methods work well, as a note to brand new tankers.
One rail gun round to the front of the twit of the Jihad Jeep will destroy it although it is even easier with a blaster. There are plenty of dumb Jihad Jeep drivers out there and once they drop a tank they will rarely do anything else so listen to the sound of a fast moving LAV as the remotes will only blow consistently with high speed. Turn on your hardeners.
+75 LAV damage
+40 LAV destruction
+50 Kill
+5 equipment destroyed (repeated up to 12 times, personally)
Also the suicide twit will sometimes get randoms jumping in with them so they are an easy bonus +50 WP.
And so it goes.

Man, we watched a plasma twit in a match today. What a miserable weapon that is. I am glad you specced into it because those SP are gone forever New Belle.
Since the amazing weapon of the twenty gazziionith century was released in 1.0 I have been killed 3 times by them. Once was even in a tank. When I had 33 armor left. Of course, I have been killed in similar situations more often with GEK-38s.
And since you are new here you should know SP is not refunded.
You are expected to waste it on useless gear, rage on the Forums, beg on the forums and QQ about how it is not refunded even though your PlasmaSquirtter/Whatever is worthless or has been made worthless by either a Nerf Hammer of Doom wielded with accuracy by CCP/Shanghai or sloppily thrown at nearly every weapon in the game and hit your favorite (or only PROTO weapon) on the bounce. Beware the Ninja Nerf. No warning, not notes, no patch notes, nothing in the forum announcements - your weapon just doesn't work the same and unless you test it ... you will never know.
Decisions have consequences in New Eden.
And if yours didn't - CCP/Shanghai will make damned certain they will sooner or later.
