I don't expect to see them until we have bigger maps. And we won't have bigger maps until we can have many more players in a battle. The PS3 can't handle 64+ players at once running on the current engine, so I don't expect to see these until we're on the PS4.
I expect them to use light turrets, takeoff and land vertically, move quickly and be even more fragile than dropships. They'll primarily be used to take out other vehicles I expect, although strafing runs on clusters of infantry will be possible. If you're moving quickly it will be hard to line up your approach from far out. Primary counters will probably be swarms and possibly other heavy weapons (possibly the rumored Amarr heavy weapon). They will be analogous to interceptors in EVE, very fast, fragile and not hit very hard.

Also, unless the game changes drastically to alow, Dust dosen't need 64 plsyers. I'm tired of people saying, "the maps aren't big enough, oh we don't have enough players" I doesn't matter, maps aren't big enough decrease the speed on the jet and player count doesn't matter. If you make jets slow then they won't be balanced, they're basically LAV's in the sky with one seat and forward firing light turrets. They need the ability to speed tank and evade fire. Giving them heavy turrets is crazy. They will wipe the map of enemy vehicles in seconds. Nobody wants that, it would ruin vehicle vs vehicle balance.
There should be a heavy aircraft too. This would be like a flying HAV with several seats, a medium or heavy turret, with room for several light turrets, move slowly and be able to linger over objectives to provide supporting fire against enemy vehicles and infantry. Something like this would be more reasonable to implement on the current hardware and map size.
