...and did OK as a flanker. I even ran the Frontline AR fit with a fair amount of success to earn some ISK.
But now, having tried a few militia fits before spending my refunded SP, I am being torn a new one every match.
My old playstyle feels redundant - scouts are outflanking me and there's little point on getting the jump on a heavy.
Any suggestions of what path to follow for an average casual player without a tonne of SP? I'm not looking for the FOTM, but a suit I can hold my own in without having to grind too much for it. |

sentinel suits. even a standard one with a standard hmg will net you a ton of kills!

Given your situation, I'd run the Commando.
The 2 Light Weapon slots give more bang for your buck, as you can run 2 weapons at the same time. This also grants flexibility, as you can adapt to any situation instantly.
See a Tank or Dropship? Just press R2 and bring out your Swarm Launcher. Foes on an elevated platform? Just press R2 and snipe them with your Sniper Rifle
2 Light Weapon slots also caters to the casual player, as you don't need to invest SP into 1 weapon to make up for it's down sides. The only problem I can see with them is the increased ISK price, but that isn't a problem on the STD ones.

I run the Minmatar Assault with a Complex Kinetic Catalyzer, and I do alright.
I used to run two Enhanced Ferroscale Plates so I could avoid the speed penalty, but I can't anymore because they took out the built in repper (even though it still says it's there).

I hate to suggest it, but maybe a scout.
Now before everyone tears me a new one for suggesting the FOTM scout suits (and lets face it, the scouts got a massive buff), let me just say that I was a scout player since 1.6, though I get bored and mix it up often. However, since 1.8 there is one thing that I have found about the caldari lights and scouts that I have absolutely loved.
Never mind the redicuously high amount of shield recharge per second, or the lowest shield delay in scouts, or the massive scan range and precision without any mods, or the 4/1 high/low combo, what I love about the Caldari Scout is it's jump. It's ability to jump over nearly ANY barricade, siding, vehicle, walls, gaps; it's all a dream.
During some matches I've been called a monkey for my ability to throw myself through the air from boxes to null-canons or onto vehicles and then onto supply depots... it's just stupid fun. Plus, its surprisingly extremely disorienting since Dust has never before been a game that allows such high vertical movements and climbs.
EDIT: I forgot one thing, the assault suits have too many problem right now. Several of them are glitched and do not receive their bonuses properly and are being out-performed by the scouts in terms of flanking/speed/scan/profile. Right now the assaults are about even or worse than scouts. |

Run momma tar assault with a cloak it actually works pretty well and will fit your play style. |
