To commemorate the launch of the largest update in this new year, I decided to start a new character and delete my previous character. Start the new year/update with a completely clean slate, if you will. I haven't touched a new character since 1.4 so I was quite surprised with the introduction this time around.
I just want to say that the NPE is MUCH better compared to what I remember when I created my first character. From what I remember, we only got a long-winded e-mail welcoming us to DUST514 and some tutorial messages in the "HELP" section of the Neocom. This time, the introduction was much more user-friendly.
_____
The step-by-step checklist to launching into battle and creating a fitting is nicely done but there should also be checklists/tutorials for managing skills and navigating the marketplace/assets.
Instead of just "rewarding" players with the MLT DS and LAV after creating a fitting, have them actually go to the marketplace and "purchase" the MLT DS, LAV, and modules. The actual ISK cost would be nothing so they are technically just "claiming" their rewards.
*Ex. 1* Go to the marketplace and puchase from the Militia Shop: -10 Militia Dropsuits (Corresponding race DS would be worth 0 ISK and in a (x10) bulk purchase) -15 Militia LAV (Corresponding race LAV would be worth 0 ISK and in a (x15) bulk purchase) -20 Militia Modules (Corresponding modules would be worth 0 ISK and in a (x20) bulk purchase) _____
The process could also be mirrored in the skills tutorial as well.
*EX. 2* Raise a single skill by one point: -Purchase the appropriate Skill Book from the marketplace -Spend points to raise a skill to the next rank (Note: Skill books can be purchased directly from the Skills page) (Note: Skill points (SP) are earned from participating in battles and generated slowly during the course of 24 hours. SP are NOT refundable so planning where to place SP is highly advised) _____
Then some automated e-mail can be sent to the player from their Corporation CEO welcoming them to New Eden, thus ending the "Introductory" phase and letting players wander the sectors to repeatedly get stomped on |

I think this thread is a very good idea.
But what about the actual game experience? You just adressed the introduction segment, which I consider less important, if the FPS / MMO gameplay is great by itself.
Is any new player around to share his opinion / feeling of the game as a whole?
I play for a whole year now and I must admit I do horribly. About 60% of the matches are nothing but trying to somehow evade the overwhelming force, that opposes me and the blueberrys. Yeah I know youre supposed to shoot now and then, its an FPS after all, but it really makes no difference. Who makes a difference is the Top 6 there with the 35 kills. You pretty much know how the match is going to end, if you look at the player-list screen in the first minute of the match. If there is a whole squad of one corporation, its practically over. I can only assume that the NPE is "you matter not" / "play big, or dont play at all".
I would really like to have the opinion of a real newbie here. |

The NPE still leaves a great deal to be desired. Two maybe three matches does not prepare any noob no matter how good they are to face the likes of AE, Dem Durties or 843 in any way shape or form and yet that is exactly what it is. The overall walkthrough is fine but new players can expect tank spam even in their first battle. WTF. This is seriously messed up, it needs some kiddie gloves not the latex coated in KY type come on!

The original post focused solely on the first play through from character creation to after the first battle. After at least 8 hours of actually grinding out ISK and SP from playing, the NPE has a ridiculously steep learning curve.
NPE on the battlefield is unforgiving to say the least, but DUST is unforgiving in general. If the entire red team is donning Proto's and complemented with Madru's and Gunni's, kiss the match goodbye. I heard that the Battle Academy was done away with, but I thought the matchmaking would be a bit more balanced.
Perhaps an automated squad enlistment would help newberries get into understanding how to operate on the battlefield.
Any clone not in a squad would get placed in empty slots of existing squads or squads will be randomly generated from the "No Squad" pool of players. If randomly generated, squad leads are determined by largest lifetime SP. Alot of the game mechanics rely on being in a squad, so getting the idea of staying in a cohesive unit could help all players, not just newberries, in making proper tactical decisions |

I agree whole heartedly. New players get into matches still having zero direction or game knowledge. Even the first academy match is too much for many new players.
I recently went into an academy match with an alt I had made to test the improved laser. I always do this when changes drop to test stuff out before I skill into it with my main. At any rate, I immediately went about my business of running a dom solo, all the while shouting commands into the team channel for the one new player I could hear mouth breathing through his mic. I had already capped the point and all the surrounding installations when the first red dot stumbled out of the redline and began to play the game. I believe this was about 5 min. into the domination.
I expect new players to be bad but these players had no idea what to do. They didn't know how or what to hack, they didn't understand that crouching in the middle of the road means I will kill you, and they clearly didn't understand that they should stick with the other players on their team.
After going 34/4 and dropping a solo orbital on the academy match I was sent out into the harsh world of real matches. I squaded up with a guy who had been playing for three days and proceeded to mentor him. He started out playing just like all the blues in the academy matches but after three or four matches getting some 1 v 1 tutelage he was clearly starting to get the hang of the game.
Here is my point. No NPE that relys on checklists is going to get new players up to speed quickly enough. Sure, some rather clued in players will get it and they will be able to deal with the fact that they are going to suck for months to come but most people, even after running through a long list of tasks meant to train them, are still going to be awful players.
What this game really needs is a mentorship system. Players who want to can use one of their alt slots to set up a mentor character. These characters would not gain any skill points, and would automatically be squadded up with new players prior to them being put into an academy match. A mentorship system like this would allow new players to see what it is like to be squaded up, and get 1 on 1 or at least small group tutelage in how to play the game, leading to longer term player retention and blueberries who actually know what they are doing.
The question is what would be in it for the mentors. I have played around with this idea for a while and I think that there are some options. 1) A rewards system similar to what exists for recruiters. Perhaps mentees are even counted as recruits thus making for easier programming for CCP. 2) Nothing, but it would give mentors a chance to sell up their corps. Letting corps recruit hopeful players right out of the academy and allowing small corps to more easily bolster their numbers. 3) Very small Sp rewards for the main associated with the PSN. These would have to be right around 1,000 sp per match which would be in line with the sp you recieved once capped out and would not be unbalancing since it is such a small amount. The downside of this is that players probably wouldn't hop onto their mentor alts until they were capped out.
I will repost these ideas in their own thread as I feel that they warrant that.

Saber really knows how to fix NPE. One thing I would like them add is to include a 30-60 sec video for each item, showcasing it and how to use it and it's purpose.
Well, time to go Commando. Fill the Ranks at 703rd.
