This weapon need a better effective range, its like only 5 meters and the optimal is only 30. Range per tier needs to be higher, 35 for STD, 38 for ADV and 42 for PRO. The full charge is fine, the heat build up is a bit too high, cool down is too high, ROF is too low, a scrambler pistol had more and that was fine.
PROS
- Full charge can help take down enemy shields for teammates.
- Surprisingly higher zoom than scrambler pistol
CONS
- Instant over heat when full charge shot.

The only real issue I have with the Ion pistol, which turned out to be surprisingly fun to use, is that the overheat mechanic--its truly defining characteristic--imposes too high a penalty and too slow a charge time to be used in "heated" CQC combat.
I mean, someone pulls out their sidearm when they run out of the clip on their main weapon and are trying to finish someone off. Having a 1.45 sec charge time on a finishing weapon doesn't sit well. Combine that with the fact that plasma weapons gain bonuses to shield (not going to be present in a finishing situation), you really don't have time to charge it when dueling, with the fact that the range is so close, and the charge mechanic--what makes it unique--is really negated in CQC. So, you end up with a fun pistol that just functions as a "regular" extremely short range pistol when it's being used in its element.
And for "regular" sidearm finishing weapons, there's better alternatives. Bolt pistols fire hard-hitting, bonus-damage-to-armor rounds, and SMGs and Magsecs do bonus damage to armor and are fully automatic.

I like to do a partial charge (about 1/3 of the way) and fire at least 2 normal shots, stop shooting for a split second, then repeat. It's a strange weapon, but there are several forms of using it. I'm not too good with it yet, but I'm just experimenting at the moment to see how I can get it to work. |

I used it to take out scouts that get too close. Works out pretty well. One shot one kill 90% of the time.

In reply to OP's request for different ranges ... ain't gonna happen.
All weapons work the same in particular to range. Increased level of weapon varies damage at the increase of CPU/PG/Cost (both SP and ISK). Modifying it for a single type of pistol isn't in the cards. Can you imagine the QQ flood about getting out gunned with their STD ion pistol by every ADV and PRO version they ran into. Which would be not only true but a bad balance technique.
All vehicles modules work the alike, as in provide the same benefit with only the active and cool down times varying. One should note that the new cloaking module works exactly the same as all the vehicle modules. Then wonder when the other suit modules will follow?

Unless a weapon is easy to overheat with normal fire, CCP is afraid to make the RoF too high. Modded controllers and such.

All the pistols need buffing in various ways. I'm of the opinion that sidearms shouldn't be forced into the finisher niche (they certainly weren't before, except maybe the post-nerf Flaylock), but given that most are unable to comfortably solo anything more than non-bricked lights and militia/standard mediums in a clip now, it seems that's where they're resigned. I'd imagine CCP is using this event to collect data and will (hopefully) tweak them all afterwards.
