"And so there I was, falling out of the sky after hijacking the assault dropship hovering above the rooftop over the communication station. Noien was damn near defeated. I could tell despite the distance. He leaped over a barricade and chucked a grenade behind him to keep them at bay while his shields repaired themselves. They were getting ready to chuck a grenade until... THWOOP, I touched down right behind them. Before they could turn around. Before they could even twitch, I sprayed them down with my assault rifle."
"That's not exactly how it went, Roy." Noien said from across the card table in the seedy little room.
"Well did I save your ass or not?"
"Well. Technically. You distracted them long enough for me to penetrate them with my combat rifle. I mean, you made a good landing. I'd give it a seven out of ten, but you didn't take them down by yourself."
"But I saved your ass right?"
The others sitting at the table laughed and chuckled under the dim lights.
Roy Ventus sat on the other end of the table in a black cargo jacket, unzipped, with a skull and crossbones graphic placed on his white shirt underneath.
"And now that I think about it, you didn't mean to hijack that dropship either, it was on accident."
"Oh. What's that? Sorry. I got some new mail on neocom. Looks like a contract." Roy said as he pulled his neocom out of one of his zippers and scanned it.
Noien folded his arms and tilted his head; a bit interested in the contract. Roy mumbled to himself, making unintelligible noises.
"Well what does it say? Who's it from?"
~~~~~
Roy Ventus walked into the station with his sizeable dufflebag, wearing the same cargo jacket and shirt, along with some slim black pants, black and white sneakers, and silver band on his right wrist covered in inscriptions. A simple pair of black sunglasses adorned his face.
His face scowled at the smell of disinfectant, not enjoying the pungent chemical stench. Upon reaching the room, he walked over to the glass table and placed his dufflebag on top. Roy scan the room. He stopped as his eyes caught the character of a nervous man, jittery and cautious in the corner holding onto a SMG, like it's an extension of his soul. Roy took a cool stride across the white floor to shake the man's hands.
"Roy Ventus. Axis of Chaos. Former CEO of Foxhound Corporation. I'm an assault, what about you?"
Roy stood there for a few seconds, his hand still grasping Sergamon, as he analyzed him even more. If Sergamon was diligent enough, he would notice Roy's right eyebrow being raised ever so slightly over his sunglasses. Finally he spoke again.
"No need to close everyone out. I'll understand if you're paranoid and cynical, but in order for us to work properly as a team, we need you at least pretend you're a part of the team. Now what's your name and where you from?"
He let go of the man's hands and folded his arms to his chest, cocking his head to the side as he waited for the response.
Addressing Sergmon, Roy went to a solid tone. "I already did. Roy Ventus of Axis of Chaos. But now that we've gotten that out of the way, how about we go and open up with the rest of the peanut gallery?"
Roy then pointed to the group conversing. If Sergmon would follow, Roy would speak up to the group first.
If Sergmon didn't follow, he would usher him over with a fanning motion of his right hand. For him, it didn't really matter if the man didn't want to.
"How's it going? The name's Roy Ventus. I'll be your cheeky assault." A grin, almost menacing, formed below his shaded eyes.
"This is Draco. He's cautious." Roy said as he pointed to Sergmon.
While the others responded, he took his time to scan them up and down. Because of his sunglasses, it was rather difficult for anyone to follow his eye movements.
An Amarr obviously
She must be Minmatar
The others are hard to detail...More than likely they're Caldari or Gallente. It'll be easy to tell once they open up their mouth. And that guy over there has a HMG...Oh wait did they stop talking?
"That's nice." Roy said while obviously not paying attention.
Such a cold group, acting like this is their first mission.
Roy followed along, half-listening, half-thinking until he heard about the chance of actual death.
"Sweet." He whispered under his breath.
It added the risk he's been so estranged to. Of course, by no means, was he suicidal but once a mercenary goes immortal, the thrill of the battlefield can be a hit or miss with it usually being the latter.
"I think I'm going to enjoy this more than I should." He said as he stripped naked.
He laid there in the goo nonchalantly, ready to "dream" away.
Roy took no time to lounge around on the rack, and picked himself up as soon as the dropsuit was ready to go. Before the technician could get to him, there was another situation that called for their attention. Roy simply stretched in waiting, watching as a few drones came to check his functionality. He was rather jaded, as he turned again to see Junko picking herself up off the floor. He kept his comments to himself, feeling that it wasn't the right time to throw a quip or two into the thick atmosphere.
Besides...We're too distant of a group to function as a team. Names and files only inform, not connect. These mercenaries didn't understand that. Rookie mistake. In a situation like this where we're limited in clones, you need people to actually be there to pick you up when you're down. Hell. We might actually never wake up if this mission is a failure and we fu-k around.
He looked to his naked body a bit in amazement. His narcissist feelings sounded off from his mouth as he moaned and rubbed his chin.That's a god body right there.
"It's a shame that I left my sunglasses on. You really need to take all of me in to have a complete experience. Might never have a chance to see this sight again. Oh Well."
By the time he stopped talking about himself, the technician came by with some more drones and started his evaluation. Roy didn't really care to look in his face but he could feel some disgust going on. He believed it was because of his sickening self-love, than the fact that he was a clone.
"No need to be so serious about things. I was clearly joking. Well just a little really, but seriously."
The technician didn't even answer but instead rushed through the rest of the evaluation. One of the drones stayed by, floating at eye level.
"What?" Roy said in an aggressive fashion as he started feel like he was being criticized.
"You're cleared."
Oh.
He decided to chase after Junko down to the armory, intent with poking her personality.
"Hey, wait up. Junko, is it?"
If Junko waited, he would position himself beside her as they walked and started speaking. "So uh...What was that back there? You alrigh'?"
If she didn't wait up, Roy would fumble with the neocom to see if the voice chat was functioning, and if it was, he would simply communicate with her across there, ignoring any hints that maybe he was actually bugging her.
If none of the above worked out well for Roy, he would physically stop her by grabbing her left shoulder and tugging her lightly and then commence with his questions.
Maybe I can start connecting the pieces here. Still don't know why I was suggested of all people. Sure, I'm a good tactician, maybe even a good strategist but am I really needed for this? My renown is abysmal, and I wouldn't consider any of my feats worth a private contract with extremely high value and risk. It couldn't be as simple as people giving me high recommendations and besides, I pissed off enough people to be blacklisted in some corporations. Not my fault the majority of people are jackasses who don't like to be called out on their jackassness...
"Ahh. I thought so. I've seen newbies go through the same thing where they'll try to stand up and end up falling like a trying baby."
Roy paused in thought, thinking about what she meant by not getting used to being immortal. His eyes crossed to the left, then back to Junko, then again to the left. He had the face of someone who had something to say. It was very different compared to his spastastic, Gallente-bred speakeasy way of communicating. So different that he actually disliked it from time to time.
"Well maybe the immortal life isn't for you? Not to discourage you but, like, when I'm in skin...the skin of a clone, it doesn't feel like a real battle. It all feels like a dream or an accurate illusion. That's why I crack jokes and cling onto my humor. To liven it up. You know, make it spicy. That's why I bring a lot of energy and put my fiber into this way of life. Maybe after this, you might want to consider another life, if not approaching immortal-hood differently. Maybe just stick to cargo running or actually trying something completely different."
His eyes crossed to the left again.
Makes me question the motives behind the request. No one in their right mind would pick a cloned mercenary who didn't like being a cloned mercenary. And even if they didn't know that, the fact that the girl has been away from the game for three to four months as a cargo runner is just as enough evidence to disqualify her from the offer. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there's something about Junko and the rest I don't know too much about. Maybe she's some super badass who's trying to escape the life. Maybe...
"But don't get caught up on all of those feelings while we're on the job. You'll do worse if you don't put your all into it but I'm sure you know that." He smiled.
"And if you do slip up, I'll have your back. I mean. It's not like we're B-F-F's or whatever." He laughed as he wiped a tear from his right eye, rubbing it as if he just got finished bawling.
"It's just that we might suffer from a fate worse than death."
Finally reaching the armory, Roy gave Junko a pat on her back. "Let's gear up."
Roy walked away from her, eyeing a particular drone. It began moving away from Roy for whatever duty it had, but it didn't get too far on the account of Roy grabbing it with both of his hands and dragging it to his face.
"Give me a Prototype Assault Rifle, base variant. A M209 Sub-Machine Gun. And fit me with these..."
Roy let go of his"assistant" and used the neocom to connect with the drone. The drone hovered about for a few seconds before it went on with it's business after another drone arrived.
"Fitting now."
Within seconds, other drones came and started fitting Roy's dropsuit with the proper set up. After a minute of scrambling, the dropsuit was now completely fitted except for one vital piece. The last drone buzzed about until come face to face with Roy, presenting him, his helmet. Placing the helmet under his arm, Roy was content. He watched Junko and Denak, waiting for others to pour in.
Roy grew impatient with waiting for everyone. Sergamon didn't come in but he didn't think it mattered much.
Here goes nothing...
"You guys trying to fail this mission?"
Roy gave a dramatic pause. Letting them think about his words.
"The way you're acting. Here we are, a group of right mercenaries who've been contracted by some group because we have outstanding reputation. Look around you and think about that for a second. Something weird is going on but that's only the half of the issues. The rest comes from you guys. We need to act like a team. Right now, I don't trust the majority of you enough to shoot a dog. How do I know if you'll save my ass? How do you know if I'll save your ass? We can't go out there facing an unknown threat like we're invincible when the mission intel clearly states different."
Roy stepped forward into the center to confront Denak, smiling as if he enjoyed the response. He even giggled at the man barking off to Galm. He bit his lip softly before grunting with satisfaction.
"I would leave, but I'd prefer to see the train wreck in effect just so that if we do die, in the afterlife, I can tell you I told you so."
Roy cocked his head while lifting his eyebrow in curiosity.
"I don't think we're very different, Mr. Kalamari. It's just that you're full of **** and you don't even know it. I mean. At least I know I'm an a-hole but you...You. For someone who's supposedly well-experienced, you lack the knowledge that usually separates the greenhorns from the vets."
"Communication is key. Simply being able to say, yes, no, confirmed in a battle doesn't make a team work. It's the thorough communication that goes on. Professionals understand this. You don't. Already, there's a good amount of hostility on the team. But sure that doesn't affect the mission as long as everyone's a professional, right? Or what about not knowing the weaknesses and strengths of your squadmate? Or what about understanding how they each fight? Or how they feel? What the f-ck have you learned in your life as an immortal? It's as simple as getting on the field and shooting? In fact, I've been criticized in leadership positions strictly for not being able to communicate with my team properly on several occasions. I was too distant. Does that sound familiar, hot shot?"
Roy rubbed the bridge of his nose and giggled again.
"But someone would think that you know everything from the manner in which you speak. Only deepens the question to why we're here. But you don't care, do you?"
Before Sergamon could pull him to the side, Roy spat, "You simple ass. Are you not understanding? It's about knowing each other? About actual communication. About enhancing our teamwork. When you know each other enough, you work better as a gatdamn squad. It's always been that way. But somehow you passed on the battlefield not knowing that. You wanna shoot me you piece of ****? Then do it. Just know that you're only supporting my point."
Roy damn near wanted to punch someone's head off. He was considering it after Galm pointed his rail rifle his way. He would've did it, left if prompted to leave by the contractee, and go back to his quarters. He's a man who doesn't care much for holding back, and the urge to be at his worst was heavy.
Finally Sergamon got him into a good distance and started talking about how Galm was Dragonaur. More reason to beat his ass. He heard about how the Dragonaur killed Gallente in an underwater city once. Roy never cares enough for the government affairs but the actual people is where his heart was with.
"That gives me more than enough reason to beat his ass right here and now. But I won't. And I won't back down to him. If we're to work as a team, they need to understand this concept. For some reason or another they've never had to actually connect with their team until they were on the battlefield and even then it would be by luck and timing that they connected. I'm supposed to say **** it, and wait to figure it out."
Roy loosened himself from the conversation and went back into the circle.
"My name is Roy Ventus. I could give a **** if you like me, but I'm sure you know this. My files probably told you about how people don't care for my personality, how I'm usually an assault who treats the battlefield like a scout would, and that I'm somewhat of a tactician, if you could call me that. What it didn't tell you is that I do what is needed to ensure success, I don't run from a fight, and if you're in need I'll do anything to get you back to top fighting potential. I run a thinly armored suit with a high repair rate so that I keep mobility. I prefer non-direct combat when possible. And despite my arrogance, I'm a lot less sure of what I can accomplish alone, than what most people think."
Roy grunted with a burst of air through his nose, content in his speech.
"If you wanna talk instead of act like a *****, catch me on the coms."
He then placed his helmet on and strolled back down the hallway with a heavy walk, not from the armor but from the weight of his feelings.
Roy idled in the hallway for a bit, pacing back and forth after getting out of view from the others. He was clinging to the anger that resided in him. It wasn't the first time he had to hold himself back to avoid losing his composure over someone and was experienced enough to know that he had to walk off before it got even uglier.
From Denak to Galm to Jacques. All of their words bit deep into his psyche.
Hard to imagine I was of a decent mind back when I first started out as a mercenary those years ago. Now look at me. Ready to stain my record for the mouth of some jack-off. Pitiful Mister Ventus. What would Jasmine think if she realized how much of a loud mouth you've become?
"Jasmine."
He finally read Junko's message from the neocom and settled his spirit.Seems like there's always a woman out there putting me back where I need to be. Jasmine. Max. Junko. It's probably time for me to get back with them. I can at least try not to get pissy. That's probably what they want from me. To act an ass so they can say I'm not cut out to be a professional merc. For them to discredit my years of struggling and digging through the dirt and mud...
Roy clenched his fist angry with thoughts for the past and present. The thought of all that he went through being discredited and dissociated with his being, with what made him, him, was quickly boiling his blood again. He shook his head and went to a calmer state again.
No. They can say what they want. I'll probably never see them again after this anyway.
At that moment, Roy felt calm enough to walk back in on his mess of a team. To his surprise he saw a few of them missing from the area. Galm was still there. That was enough of a presence to make Roy keep his guard up.
Now that I think about it. I did hear fussing. Kinda just tuned it out.
He saw Draco on the edge and tried to put the pieces together. He couldn't help but assumed that they got to him as well. I was relaxed like an overdosed drugee compared to that guy...He's probably ready to spazz out on someone if he could. I felt the same way...
"Aye, yoh Draco. One of these technicians wanted to talk to you right quick. Hurry up and come with me."
If Draco would follow, Roy would drag him to the side after getting far enough down the hallway. "Don't let them get to you. The best thing to do is to show them off when we get on the field. Leave them with bitter taste of ignorance in their mouth, man. Make them remember you not for something to laugh at, as they will surely try to laugh at us, but as something they want to try to forget. More than likely we won't ever see them ever again and if we do, hope that it's a part of our contract to deadshot them."
"I wouldn't advise that. It would put a flag on your history. Not many people would prefer to work with a team killer. Even less would want to work with a team killer who does it outside of professional reasons. Like I'm saying Draco. Buddy. It isn't worth it to lose your grapes over these people right now. For all it's worth, some of them might actually be better people once we get into our natural element out there on the battlefield. Not that I expect that but what I do expect is for my contracts to come in a lot less frequently."
Roy let go of Sergamon's shoulders and proceeded to take his helmet back off to present his rather sharply made, black face to the immortal merc. His black eyes would stare into Sergamon's own, intensely.
"If you really need a release. Punch me right in the face. I mean, this is my money-maker but for you, you can punch me in the face as hard as you want."
He stood there with his arms opened, gesturing Sergamon to follow through with a nod.
Despite the fact that he could be pretty self-absorbed, Roy in general was a nice person. He was born that way, and it was futile to shake it away as that is what made him, him. His feelings.
As he stood there waiting, he couldn't help but have flashbacks to his days as a child. He was bullied all the way to his last days of public education. He was used to enduring pain. He thought it made him stronger than his attackers. He wasn't afraid to take a punch of two if there was a need for it.
Roy gritted his teeth, bracing for impact. He was honestly surprised it didn't go through and such thoughts could be seen on his face. He then smiled at the comment.
"Quite the opposite really. I think you're just another guy. Everybody needs some sort of release. I know I usually do and nothing quite helps you release your frustration than punching somebody. So I figured, hey give it a shot. What could go wrong? This isn't my real face anyway."
Roy reached out to shake the man's hand again. Earlier, Sergamon avoided it. Rather cautious of the man. Now this was a test for him to see how much has changed in their relationship. It wasn't that Sergamon had to like him but a positive relationship with a teammate always helped the battle.
Roy came trucking slowly into the cruiser and strapped in. He still wasn't in much of a mood to talk to his squadmates although he didn't need to for now. "Indeed. This can be no less than forgettable, Sergamon."
Roy nodded his head along to the speech as Cross went on. He was halfway bored and halfway interested, which was just another curse of being an immortal mercenary. He sighed as Cross finished and looked towards Noah as he started.
"Sounds like the best way to do it. Honestly I can't say who should be with who. Considering that some of us have had experiences with each other in the past, I believe it's better to go off of someone's elses statements when forming the squads."
Roy would then proceed to look at the other mercenaries aside from Junko and Sergamon.
Really. We just need to make balanced squads. Nothing too shabby, just a healthy formation.
