Played TF2 for the first time in half a year, and looted a beggar's bazooka(finally). Then it got me thinking.
Why not rework the swarm launcher a little and reintroduce dumbfire, but not the beast that was staked in the heart long before my time and horror stories of which circulate the forums today.
1. First change would call for changing the way the ammunition is displayed to total number of missiles carried rather that number of salvos.
Mlt - (2/4) (4 missiles) -> 8/16 Std - (3/6) (4 missiles) -> 12/24 Adv -(3/6) (5 missiles) -> 15/30 Pro - (3/6) (6 missiles) -> 18/36
2. Next re-enable the swarm launcher to dumbfire only a single missile at a fire rate of 60rpm. <-- also serves as minimum refire time
3. To fire additional missiles per shot a lock-on needs to be established. The longer the lock the more missiles are fired up to the maximum of the tier.
*not taking operation skill into account ** values for non-variant swarm launcher
Mlt - 0.47 sec per additional missile fired Std - same as mlt Adv - 0.35 sec per additional missile fired Pro - 0.28 sec per additional missile fired
Example. At the pro tier, when the trigger is held and a lock is established for .56 seconds a 3 - missile salvo will be fired, holding lock for the full 1.4 seconds fires a full salvo
4. Adjust splash range, and adjust splash damage to an acceptable amount.
Summary
1 - Add dumbfire 2 - Change the way ammo is displayed 3 - Tweak firing mechanic 4 - Tweak splash

The swarm launcher in the Carbon engine was dumbfire. Was a cool build all around.

The Swarm Launcher's splash damage is 19HP per missile.
Meaning that the splash damage per volley looks like this (76/95/114). Considering how that's less than the PLC, I think the splash damage doesn't need adjusting.
Good idea otherwise.

it would be nice if they brought in a swarm launcher that is point and shoot that does not require a lock on so you can use it on infantry, however CCP would need to move the skill bonuses to the weapon so that this new version can;
1) be a longer range mass driver like weapon for anti-infantry use you know have the same splash radius ect. only having 4 rounds per mag think Flaylock pistols big brother.
2) skill bonus could be +10% to missile velocity per level.
3) they can have a anti-armor version that does the old swarm launcher damage that can fire 12 swarms before the need to reload.
I could give you 10 reason why the Dust team cant get the Amarr tank style right but they are all out of care.

It fires one rocket when dumbfired, that's why I suggest the splash damage adjustment

Exactly how?
60rpm, One missile a second at 220 damage per missile with splash damage less than that. It's the only weapon in the game that is 100% completely useless against infantry. Considering that it takes up a light weapon slot that is unacceptable.

Don't worry guys the minmatar will have an RPG as an alternative to guided swarm launcher in the light category assault being an unguided Anti-personnel Rocket breach being an unguided Anti-Vehicle Rocket

I think they should go back to one of the builds many moons ago (it was in closed beta I think?) you think FOTM is bad... lol... the swarm skill was a 5% increase to splash radius . It was a lot of fun but could not go on. When I say bring it back i mean the function of dummy firing swarms or being able to lock onto vehicles was possible at that time. What they should do however, is drop the splash damage and radius down to roughly that of the PLC... maybe a little less as the PLC is rough to use as AI and AV, and the swarm has a magazine.

I'm pretty sure actual rocket launchers were datamined with the latest data dump. So, swarm launchers most likely don't need the ability to be dumb fired. That's not to say that SLs don't need balance in some other areas, though, such as missile travel time increases as you move up meta levels.

All theoretical of course (Crystal Ball) Some time ago a CCP dev mentioned that there is a "launcher" category for light weapons. The Minmatar version of the Swarmer is the Mass Driver. Gallente is PLC. I wonder what the Amarr variant will be.
Anyway, I definitely support dumbfire. It would make Swarmers far less ridiculous. |
