This is an absolutely necessary feature, but I feel it could use a little tweaking. In EVE you have a 'gate cloak'.
EVE When you jump into a new system, you spawn somewhere with 15km of the gate. Even if you don't have a cloaking device fit, when you get to the other side you are 'gate cloaked'. The gate cloak lasts for 60 seconds as long as you don't do anything. You can move the camera around and look, but don't try to move (you can't activate modules while cloaked so that isn't an issue.) During the gate cloak you are also invulnerable. No one can lock you while cloaked, so this is a bit redundant, but just in case it ever occurred that a bomb detonated close enough or a smartbomber was within range, you wouldn't take damage. Further, active cloaks (modules) in EVE will drop if anything comes within 2km. Gate cloaks will not drop based on proximity. Only when you move or the time runs up.
There are variations on this mechanic. The same rules also apply to jumping into a new system through a wormhole. When you exit a station, you are visible, but invulnerable for as long as you don't activate any modules or move. The only exception is that you can use your HUD or keyboard shortcut to bring your ship to a full stop. The station undock invulnerability is also much shorter, somewhere around 10 or 15 seconds. This gives you time to get your bearings on the undock.
DUST In DUST, we have a similar mechanic, and a mechanic similar to a lot of FPS titles. You spawn in and are invisible and invulnerable for a period of time. (Or some variation in other titles.) The problem is I haven't been able to determine any consistency with DUSTs 'spawn cloak.' I know it lasts even if you use the right stick to look around. But sometimes I spawn in visible and vulnerable. I haven't been able to determine a consistent duration for the spawn cloak. Every time I've camped a spawn in (despicable, it shames me and dishonors my family) I've noticed that targets are still invulnerable even after they're visible. Often I am killed by explosives such as REs or grenades while I still appear invisible on my screen.
My proposition is to fix the spawn cloak to make it consistent. It should likely be no longer than 10 or 15 seconds, so you can get your bearings nice and well. The most important issue is that you should be completely invulnerable until you break cloak or it wears off, and vulnerable the very instant you break spawn cloak or it wears off. Moving, aiming down sights, switch weapons / equipment should break the cloak as normal. To offset the immediate vulnerability after visibility, the spawn cloak could be adjust so that the reticle doesn't turn red and Aim Assist doesn't kick in when you pass over a newly spawned in enemy.
