Well, I like the graphics of DUST 514. They aren't the best thing ever but they sure are better than what we had in beta. The PS3 is a very limited machine this time. I think even the 24 vs 24 players are never going to happen in this platform.

Actually Dust had better graphics awhile back when they were using the Carbon engine. However it melted PS3s so they had to start over with Unreal. Hopefully Carbon works on PS4.

You can increase graphics at the expense of having Fog of War out past 50 meters.
I much preferred Chromosome where you could see from one end of the map to the other, rather than Upisings "things are pretty but you can only see 100-200 meters."

judging from the availability of at least 6 gigs of ram, we should be able to have at least 12x better graphics, or 12x more people on maps visually. Network wise it might not be possible though.... well see at the end of the summer with the official availability of the Unreal Engine 4 since three days ago ....

The can improve and probably will a little as CCP gets better at coding for the PS3 and code optimization. Experience with the PS3 architecture and programming methods is key to making games look better and run smoother. It is a difficult and timely process but it can produce very nice looking games.

I don't think it can on the ps3, it already at it's limits. There are games that look better the resources demanded at single time those games are probably significantly lower... smaller areas/map sections, fewer number of textures, hidden or not more loading screens, etc.
Point is the PS3 is maxed or nearly maxed out.

I like the graphics, I think it's a nice looking game and the maps are huge and with the need (blame the snipers) to be able to see very long distances in these huge maps, it's difficult to keep the lag to a minimum and also push the graphics. Keeping this game so big and so nice and keeping lag to a minimum is a real balancing act, they've done a great job with what they have to work with.

Frostbyte from electronic art has way more optimizations than UE3, the problem is UE3, it has been upgraded a bit but most of Epics last two years as been at working on UE4. CCP lacks the engineers to make the engine better and they are right not to put efforts there since Epic has done the job to create UE4 and although it will take some time to upgrade the game to the engine, probably Epic has an upgrade plan for them worked out already.
Thrust me, the playstation 3 can do better than dust, but factor in multiplayer and bad junior code from China and there you go, bottle neck.
Unless I am proven wrong by Unreal engine 4 in the next few weeks, Frostbyte is the most powerful next gen engine in the industry atm, maybe Scimitar from Ubisoft is getting somewhere near Frostbyte. Dont be fooled by Dunia's latest release Watch dog, this engine is **** incarnated imo.

The graphics in DUST are not bad really. It is mostly that DUST has an aesthetics problem. The classic example is to look at Spirits Within compared to The Incredibles. Spirits Within obviously as much better 'graphics' but isn't as pretty and pleasing as The Incredibles. DUST needs it's own kind of look. EVE's character models are dated as all hell but I won't ever call the graphics in EVE bad. The reason is because go to a Blackhole Wormhole Space and look down. Fly to a plasma planet and look at it. The game gives a truly beautiful backdrop to which to play with rather basic models. It works.
I don't think you can simply state "The Unreal Engine can't do any better on the PS3." The same engine, Unreal 3, powered Mass Effect 1-3, Bioshock, and the Batman games. Obviously those games are very different but they do show what the PS3 can do. I do think DUST could look better than it does now. |

Well. I cant play this game on HD without it completely crashing my PS3 so I'm forced to play in SD for all of eternity while playing this (No, its not my PS3. Dark Souls 2, Far Cry, Bioshock, TLOU, Tomb Raider, Borderlands, Demons' Souls and Starhawk can all be played on HD for hours, I cant even log on to check mail in DUST while in HD)
So, short answer. No. |

Just so you remember Mark Rein of Epic fought vigorously to have 512 MB of ram in the XBOX 360, there is only that much the unreal engine can do on the PS3 and Xbox, it is still very good on the PC because of the high availability of RAM.
Since there is a lot of ram on the PS4 there will be room for a lot more, if not graphics, it will be larger multiplayer for sure. Also there are twists that needs to be made on the PS3 so data can be processed by the cell processor. The ps4 comes back to the X86 architecture which will speed up development gracefully because of stack sizes in multi-threads.

I don't think that Dust 514's graphics can get radically better on the PlayStation 3. I mostly expect small improvements into engine optimization with the platform. (Again, which I doubt seeing the engine is Unreal, and it has many limitations when it comes to really huge maps such as the ones in Dust 514) My conclusion is based on the hardware that the PlayStation 3 is currently equipped with;
PlayStation 3 Specifications- Cell BE processor. In particular, the Cell processor on each node has only six SPEs accessible to the user out of eight. One of the eight SPEs is disabled at the hardware level due to yield reasons and another SPE is reserved for use by the GameOS operating system
- Memory system built of dual-channel Rambus Extreme Data Rate (XDR) memory. The PlayStation 3 provides a modest amount of memory of 256 MB
- A special edition graphics card from NVIDIA and 256 MB of video RAM.

Can the graphics on Dust get any better on PS3? Yeah, they could, performance could be better too. Will CCP be able to get the graphics (or performance) to be any better on PS3? I would not hold your breath.
Basically it comes down to the developer being able to optimize both the engine and the hardware. After two years, it seems pretty clear that there are limitations to the team's skill set...with the Unreal Engine, the Cell Processor and shooter design in general. It is also about resources, of which CCP seem to have few. Fair enough I guess with a F2P shooter but IMO somewhat of a cop-out.
There are dozens of games that ran on the PS3 and looked really good. These titles were no more 'demanding' than Dust is. I mean basically we are talking about a 16v16 shooter with vehicles. But other studios had bigger and better teams I guess. Lots of variables...few in CCP's favor. |

And dust is not one of them, even though to be honest the graphics are pretty neat, and they can get better, plus I haven't seen such graphics in any other unreal engine game. But transfering it to PC sometime would be pretty much the best solution to everything. |
