Hi everyone,
I've been playing DUST since the open beta and I really enjoyed playing as an assault dropsuit merc. However with the arrival of 1.8 and the influence of CEOPyrex and Cyrius-Li Moody I have decided to try scouting in conjunction with my assault style of play.
I know i want to play a sneaky scout who outflanks his opponents and attacks from unexpected angles which means i need low scan profile and an acceptable amount of hp to survive encounters with multiple enemies.
Here is my conundrum, I have maxed out both Armour and Shield skills as well as Shield Extension and Armour Plating and I now have to make a choice on which racial suit to choose from depending on my tanking specialization.
Please help me out with any advice on the advantages on racial suits bonuses, advantages and possible module fits with which i could best accomplish my desired role, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! |

If you didn't get Biotics 5 and kincats 5, start on that.
Then, you can use a scout properly. Christopher basically wrote their uses.
Also, Amarr Scout is basically an assault disguised as a scout. So, maybe that might be an easier transition towards the role.
I'm Gallente Scout and will continue to be post 1.8 because of dampning and DAT QUAFE. Oh, yeah, it also affects any BPOs and Black Eagle Scouts you may have.
I'd say use biotics and electronics rather than hp buffers. Well, except maybe shield extenders since they don't slow you down.
EDIT: Almost forgot! Use CR or RR for easy mode scouts! That crutch can really save the day for you! |

well, I think you have to consider your squad, or the guys you run with.
the caldari scout will be great to run right alongside his squad, because his sensors will catch nearby enemies.
the gallente scout will be a ghost. nobody sees it coming, and it sees everyone close.
the amarr scout will be able to get objective to objective faster than any, and the Minnie will be able to get to a new objective and hack it like a boss.
I think gallente is the scout you're looking for. it's the one that makes sense with what you want the suit to do. |

Yeah, the best assault scout is the gallente scout because you can ignore an armor repper as its built in and you won't need more than one dampener (if any) to avoid everything with the cloak, which gives you all the scouts best, while having almost everything the exact same defense as the assault.
If you have a negative affinity for gal scouts, then I'd suggest a min or cal scout. The min scout will be thy pc hacking scout and will always be valued, limiting factor is while nova knives can be super effective and will be Sentinels killers (bypass resists and no proficiency changes), but its a very skill intensive weapon. The cal scout is good for squad vision (can detect and gets detected back), but with only two low slots their fitting options are tied and with a heavy shield tank and really low armor, you're open to rock, paper, scissors, hoping you don't find yourself against any of the scramblers, so keep that in mind.
Perhaps I am underestimating the amarr scout, but I can't see a reason to run one when the gal scout is miles ahead.

Ok, you should have 15-17m SP
Given they've refunded your drop suit SP means you can pick 1 Proto suit. Given you haven't skilled into a specific weapon already you can pick any suit. Given you've invested in the right drop suit skills you can make an easy transition.
Stealth: Adv; Gal = Amarr > Min > Cal Pro: Gal > Amarr > Min > Cal
Recon: Cal > Min > Amarr = Gal
EHP: Amarr > Gal > Min > Cal
Now weapons, CR / MagSec / ScP / ScR / RE (RR and AR have high PG and are more difficult to fit, in particular on a Min scout). Min scout are forced to use NK due to their bonus, and unless you want to be NK this class is sub par.
Gal and Amarr can play the stealth game but Gal is slightly better suit overall. Amarr is more adaptable to different styles but it's not to say a Gal cannot light infantry well either. You will see a lot more Gal than Amarr. The Cal is the ace in the hole, a lovely suit which excels in a strong squad. It has great strength but horrible weakness and it not mobile or stealthy and therefore you shouldn't pick it.
With core biotic skills you should be able to produce a great scout, damp/prec amp/prec range/speed/stamina are all core skills. Be sure to max CPU/PG skills to maximize your suit, at 15m+ SP this should have been done already.
The Gal is a better choice, the Amarr would be your second choice. Both have ability to get under scans and both are 2 hi and 4 low at prototype which is ideal for flexibility and adaptability. If you can afford to continuously run Proto suit the Gal should be the choice but at adv the Amarr is a great option due to its stamina/stamina regen bonus.

Wow thanks for all of your advice guys!
So since i'm taking Gal scout it means that I'll be armour tanking, any suggestions on balancing between the use of normal plates, feroscale and reactives as well as other important modules necessary to a good scout (besides the scan profile reduction which i already need anyway)? |

But from what I understand about scouts from the bonuses is...
Gallente are for being undetected Caldari are for passively seeing everyone Minmatar are for speed and melee/ hacking Amarr are for... Uhm... Uh.. Running I guess?
Amarr have the near constant sprint speed so:
No speed mods needed so you can double up other mods. Be true Amarr and armor up. Be a light assault! Get ahead of the main group foe link placement without having to drive, therefore remain stealthy. Be a spotter or bait for the heavies.

Don't armor tank a Gal scout unless it will be the only suit you are trying to run. Know that as a poor excuse for an assault suit you will die.
I try to only run the Gal scout suit so no problem with armoring up. But, for running the scout to its strengths you should focus on staying away from gunfire. Jumping, sneaking and weaving.

If you are serious about scouting, you could always run/join R 0 N 1 N. Or join [Scouts United] chat channel, most of us hang out in there. I was hoping that 1.8 would bring, with the addition of the new scout suits, a buff to the shotgun.
I'd like to see a scout weapon that requires the ability flank and move in close to do a lot of damage. Unfortunately with the terrible hit detection and the unadvertised nerf to shotgun the norm is going to become a loaded down armor tanked cloaked rail rifle assault scout.
I would be fine with knives, but only one suit can make them shine and until they change the backpedal speed they'll get you killed more often than not.

Gallente scout shotgun
Should be fast with good regen. A flank attack with a shotgun is devastating. This is a hit and run suit. Get round, attack from rear, escape, disappear, repeat. Also remotes. It's a combat style the requires practice but is very effective and will be even more so come 1.8. Notice also that I have maxed strafe speed by only using a ferroscale plate. This is important for shotgunning, though the suit may be a little light on hp. Maybe you could swap the repairer for another ferroscale plate.
It's worth noting that this is almost an exact copy of my planned Minmatar scout, with an almost straight swap of scan range and a little hp for speed and hack speed. Just one idea. |

Alright my fit is starting to come together now, thanks a lot. Final point is deciding on a secondary weapon to use in conjunction with a CR. The problem here is that I need to be able to inflict high damage with my secondary since the CR is relatively low on high burst damage.
Any suggestions on the new or old sidearm choices best suited for a gallente scout? Also NK tips would be usefull since I am absolute rubish at running them |

Since my name was mentioned I'll chime in.
As for which suit it's really just a choice between which you prefer, armor or shields. I personally like shields because I've got an ADD style of play and that quick regen allows me to engage multiple targets in quick succession. The only downside to that is I have to be more picky about the engagement. Regardless of what anyone says, your suit choice should be based off your play style/needs. Don't choose a suit because a bunch of forum goers say it's going to be THE scout suit. Choose it because it's the suit you want.
As for side arms I run my knives or a scrambler pistol. With the headshot bonus the scrambler pistol is a beast. Just flank a guy and shoot him in the head. Scrambler also works great on removing shields from suits that would otherwise give the CR a hard time (heavies and caldari).
With knives, as a few have said, go straight to your ZN's. You'll have an easier time than with your basic knives. Getting decent at knifing is more about positioning/approach than anything else. Start by only engaging stationary targets, after you get an idea of how damage you can deal try hitting moving targets. Really there's no "secret" to how to use knives. You just gotta go out there and cut people. You're going to die a lot but as long as you learn from every death the losses won't be in vain. :D
