inb4 Ion Pistol has massive kick
Sidenote: It's funny how Proto Scrambler Pistols got around a 40% nerf to ROF and they still outperform the Ion Pistol. That's just sad.
Shield regeneration bonus for Gallente Assault is about as useful as Sharpshooter for Nova Knives.

Edit: Both charge time reduction and kick reduction? Damn that STD pistol could be useful on my scout! Good luck finishing anything with 1.4 charge up time. Oh and there's a long seize after that.
Oh and the charge does around 350 damage, not enough to kill anything other than scouts without any modules on.
Oh and the Ion Pistol has a shield bonus, so it will be difficult to "finish" anything considering armor is the last line of defense.
Need I say more?

Its like a Scrambler Rifle..
Semi auto and charge shot. Charge shot to the enemies head when you get the jump on them.
The AR was a great weapon with the damage profile it has, before it got shafted..
Lets wait and see... The Scrambler pistol now has lower RoF than IP.

Lets wait and see... The Scrambler pistol now has lower RoF than IP. The difference is that the Ion Pistol: 1. Overheats after a charged shot 2. Has the lowest damage out of ANY pistol or SMG
Also, it's a rumor (Comes from CPM but it's a "not sure" thing), but the Ion Pistol can't hold a charge.

Okay some facts from the SDE (http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/365573) coolDownTimeIfOverheated3.5 heatCostPerSecond5.0 overheatIntensity2.0 feedbackDamage0.0 maximumHeat100.0
If you compare this with the scrambler rifle (semi auto) stats (http://www.stuff514.com/sde/type/355697): coolDownTimeIfOverheated5.0 heatCostPerSecond60.0 overheatIntensity2.0 heatCostPerSecond5.0 overheatIntensity2.0
It has the similar heat characteristics, but it has a lot lower heat cost per second.
Will it overheat in one shot? Dont know. CCP has to answer that.
One theory: The reduce charge skill will actually reduce overheat too, since you will charge up the pistol faster. Hence less heat per second is summed up.
Drop it like its hat.

It is right.
After any charged shot, the IP will overheat. Straight away. That's a gigantic difference from the SCR, where the key to victory is often the follow-up volley.

Have you tried this weapon or? Because it has a lot less heat generated per second than the SCR.
"By overriding internal temperature controls, the weapon can be overcharged to produce a focused, bulk discharge of sufficient lethality to instantly neutralize most soft targets. Caution is advised however, as each overcharged shot will shut down internal systems until the excess heat can be flushed from the weaponGÇÖs core."
Says nothing about the weapon itself shutting down, only about the "internal systems" which is kind of vague.

Dude that description right there is pretty black and white.

It is going to overheat after each charged shot and will probably have an animation of it venting the heat from its cyclotron.

But you can charge for different amount of time right? The weapon starts to charge when you press the mouse. With your logic each shot overheat the pistol. There has to be something more to it.
Can this weapon even store the charge shot, or is it more like a plasma cannon? I think it will be like a plasma cannon.

Looking at all the attributes on the SDE it looks nearly identical to the scrambler rifle except in heat cost per second. |

Can this weapon even store the charge shot, or is it more like a plasma cannon? I think it will be like a plasma cannon. If you charge it fully and do not release the button, it will overheat perhaps?
If you release the trigger before that time, it doesnt overheat and shut down internal systems? Perhaps it doesnt fire a big shot either (like if you release the trigger on plasma cannon or forge gun before it fires).
Hence, it is probably like a scrambler pistol, with better damage profile -10% armor +10% shield, lower damage per shot, higher ROF. With a small perk to overheat it to fire a big shot (similar to the plasma cannon), risk v reward style.
That means, you will probably be able to shoot regular shots and then overheat to finish off the target with the big shot.
Over heating and shutting down internal functions is the same exact thing: you won't be able to shoot after a charged shot.
Also we don't know wether you can charge for different sets of time.

Exactly like I thought.
There will be a "plasma cannon like" shot, which can be held. And the pistol overheats immidiately when you release it?
The important question is: Does it overheat like the ScR or the Officer AR? You can switch weapons if the officer AR overheats right?
If its not possible to switch weapons after overheat, the charge shot will be a finishing shot. Dont know how good the weapon will be in that case, perhaps it will just be useable as a silly looking hair dryer?

This thing appears weak on paper. I'll wait to see it in action before making a final verdict, but I think it's very likely in need of a buff. The charge mechanic seems very odd with the long charge up, followed by a guaranteed overheat. I've still yet to hear of when that's going to be useful: can't open with it, because you'll be killed while you're overheating like an idiot, and you can't close with it because you're not going to stop and charge mid-fight. Maybe if you're in-and-out of cover and you've got him down to his last bits of health and are both ducking in cover for shields to regen, you could theoretically charge it up then, pop out and blap them. If it can't hold a charge though, it's going to be pretty useless.
CPM did you talk to CCP about this gun beforehand? Is there a logic to when the charge mechanic is advantageous that we're all overlooking? I assume you voiced the same concerns that seem obvious enough to everyone else right? It's just so weird.
Best PvE idea ever!
