I am not a tanker. Never was. Calling myself one would be a joke but I did indeed have a nice 1.8 Million SP Madrugar which I drove around skirmish and FW maps.
And in all honesty it was so much more enjoyable, I still remember getting killed by one swarm clip which was fired from the stratosphere but still. If I did everything right I would kill other tanks, get a ton of kills and what's important - I felt as if I had accomplished something. Tank kills are not as personal anymore - take normal missiles, put them on a gunnlogi, activate 1 hardener and 2 damage mods, profit.

My tank fit was crap (Two heavy reppers, one shield, one armor on a madruger) and I tended to die if anyone with a proto swarm looked at me funny, but it was indeed fun. I think a large part of that was due to A: The risk was very high. You were afraid to lose those tanks but when you used them and kicked the other team into the dirt, it was extremely rewarding, and B: Unless you had hundreds of millions, you weren't bringing out a tank every game and you didn't see tanks that often as they were so expensive. Now that that's gone, they're just... boring... and I'm honestly glad I dumped my vehicle skillpoints into dropsuits when 1.7 hit. Tanking just isn't that much fun anymore.

Been tanking for a year. I prefer 1.7.
The reason why is because I have actual builds now. In Chromosome, I ran a Madugar with 3 Hardners, a Plate, and a Repairer. For the highs, I had a Scanner. That was it. The only thing that changed was if I put in a Blaster or a Railgun. When Tank's PG was nerfed coming out of beta, the build became 2 Hardeners, a Plate, a Repairer, and Blaster/Railgun. It was the same fit for everything.
1.7 is now different. 3 choices means hard choices and actual builds now. I have more tank fittings than I have Dropsuit settings because of how radically different they can be. Pre 1.7, there was a clear cut choice; the Staggered Hardener Madrugar was THE best option in the game. Everyone likes to state one set up is far superior than the others now but from my experience they all have their pros and cons.
So I prefer 1.7. |

I'll give you that. The options are quite nice when it comes to tanking now. CCP definitely did a good job making multiple things viable instead of just the standard duel hardener fitting that everyone used to use.

Closed beta, around the time of the Developers Faction Cup.
The Devs played 4 rounds against each of the factions, and posted some twitteresque updates as the battles were happening.
Amarr f.ex: Oh noes, they got all objectives!
Gallente: These guys are quick!
Caldari......: Wait... they brought in HOW many tanks?
I think there were like 8 of us pummeling them with railguns for the entire match.
Two days later, tanks got a nerf |

Nah man, I remember the Director. You count as far as I'm concerned :P
But seriously. I think most pre-1.7 tankers miss the old tanks. Had they halved our price (and fixed SL rendering) I'd have been content.
As it is, I get my kicks from large missiles.
Real men do it with missiles.

Prefered chrome
Had adv/proto vehicle hulls and all the turrets were good to use and we had more mods and skills plus more variety in general with possible fits
Pre 1.7 it just turned into swarms on a tower says no to everything, while armor >shield in every way while a 2mil+ tank was ******* useless
PC was more against FG and other tanks but the odd swarm/AV nade scrub was about
Doesnt matter expect it all to change again

I definitely liked tanking before it became so easy to skill into.
It used to take real skill.

Yep I much preferred the old school tanks, and distinctly dislike the fact that new money can compete with me, probably not the most endearing things to say but I like to be honest, getting killed by ppl with the barest hint of SP in tanks makes me rage, atleast ADS still require SP and actual skill. |

While I did not mainly tank, I had a few million in tanks. Enough for some proto armour and fittings and adv blasters, I loved tanks pre-1.7. I especially loved fitting them because of the crazy stuff you could do. Once stacked 3 damage mods into a maddy's lows just to see what would happen(why did they make dmg mods 30% hi-slot active modules again?). That was fun. I miss fitting tanks pre-1.7, the modules and fitting requirements made way more sense back then.

Absolutely! Beyond any doubt, without question.
A turret had damage, heat cost, rate of fire plus range. One could also choose one that fired slower, hit harder and generated more heat. Then there was the one that cost a huge bump in CPU/PG but ran cooler AND gave longer optical range!
Static cooling systems, active cooling systems and damage mods added to the mix. Now every single rail gun turret (to limit my explanation) can fire five rounds. The sixth will overheat. If you can track the shots fired by your opponent and they shoot six - the chance to pop that tank just skyrockets.
Okay, back to < pre-Uprising. My favorite turret did 1106 damage. Which let you have five rounds like today. But running an active cooler let you fire 9 rounds. An Aussie friend of mine also ran the static cooler which let him fire 12 rounds. Now imagine coming up against three rail gunners. Standard Joe, myself and the Aussie. Even Clint Eastwood would be daunted, "Did I fire five rounds ... or nine rounds ... or twelve rounds". Now do the math and the only way to survive mine or my friends guns was for US to miss. Otherwise there wasn't a tank that can handle that much damage.
Plus we could see and shoot across the map. The new QQ Kittens don't have any real comprehension of Red Line Tank Sniping. My best Sniper Rifle hit was a head shot at 1350m with a Farsight Sniper Rifle that shot stock @ 1000m (thus the Farsight) and cost AUR. Now, realize that a sniper that could make that shot could be murdered in kind by my Rail Gun or my Forge Guns, from farther away.
And turrets worked. Rail Guns actually fired rounds and did damage. We could see to the other end of the map, not just shoot and pray.
Uprising threw all that out and drove the final nail in the coffin at 1.7. Now we have Sicas that use double damage mods and pop tanks with three shots, two if they get lucky or use a Particle Accelerator. All flavored with tankers that get QQ about losing a slug fest and come at you with a Jihad Jeep. Okay, you killed me but not because you were any good, merely suicidal.
Madrugers and Gunloggis have lost slots and the bonuses don't actually help. Armor bonus is 5% PG reduction per level, but we always over run on CPU before PG. So, not helping here dude.
But we have immersion breaking freaking frakking grass that pops up as we walk or drive in the Dust. Because that is how it would be ====>> in Space.
Did I mention we didn't have stupid volcano shader effects being present in the war barge or in the sniper scope? Yeah, none of that stuff was there. Just focus on what you wanted to do, get the ISK/AUR/SP and make it happen. Then be a Red killing beast while on other days you would wonder what it was exactly that you did wrong.
Those days were good. And those days are gone.
And so it goes.

Except for AV that was too oppressive (invisible swarms, lollaidai, etc) tanking before 1.7 was better imo, there were more modules and tank vs infantry was more balanced than now, some little adjustment were needed but not a comnplete revolution like 1.7.
1.8 it's so secret that nobody know what will be in it, even after patch notes..

Tanking was best in the chromosome build back in beta. More variety, AV seemed to be a lot more balanced as were tanks. Afterwards they skewed it all in favour of AV where literally only THE BEST tankers survived. That's great but not much fun for the average guy. Now it is skewed in favour of the tankers so no, I dont like any of the builds until we go all the way back to chromosome.
