Just some honest feedback for the Devs from a new player. I picked up Dust a little over 3 months ago. I play Eve so I was interested in Dust as it sits in the same universe. I did not corp up and don't play with a microphone. So here goes.
Damage is way too high. I read the dev blogs now so I know you know this and it is getting fixed. Kudos.
Vehicles are far too effective. As it stands there are actually a good handful ways for infantry to deal with vehicles (outside of manning a stationary turret which are usually destoryed for the points at the onset of each match). None of these are really effective however. Forge guns require heavy suits to use so that bars any new player from the start and even then I've only seen them effectively used maybe twice. Swarm launchers are laughable. Besides the time to travel and strange pathing of the missiles the damage is on par with shooting a tank with your rifle. Two volleys will not even kill jeeps more than half of the time. I've only seen 1 person use the ground planted vehicle explosives and they didn't get run over. The only bright spot I've seen is AV grenades. I've killed a few jeeps running around doing the road kill thing (so annoying) but since you are reducing the amount I can carry next patch and stopping them from reloading they are going to go back on the pile of useless gestures as well I fear. Remote explosives are fine too if you can get close. And fun. So there is that. I know I could get a militia tank but they are too expensive, I don't like driving vehicles in a shooter, and someone with actually tanking skills always finds me and kills me. So vehicle on vehicle seems fine anyway my skills are just lacking. So 2 for like 10 options actually work for infantry. Grenades won't kill tanks and you have to be next to them to kill them with remote explosives. The real reason that none of these other ways work is that every vehicle can retreat and heal themselves so quickly they are immortal against ground troops for all purposes. This goes for ships as well. First sign of damage they run away and come back fully healed.
Prototype suits and guns. I've turned the game off multiple times after watching a lone prototype player smash an entire team and get something like 30 kills to zero deaths. Yes, there are skills involved both accumulated and that the actual player has but the difference is staggering. To unload a clip into somone's back just to have them turn and mow you down with 3 hits is very frustrating. Honestly I don't know what to do about this. You need to reward people who play and have been here but at the same time getting into this game is very difficult with this gear being spammed all over the place. Maybe put a limit on how many can be deployed. They are prototypes after all? No idea, I just know they are a huge balancing issue to get new players to keep playing the game. Two or three of these games back to back will have new players running for another game. I know I've thought of doing it multiple times.
Other than that I feel this really is a good shooter. It could be great if it innovated a bit but as suits and guns are still being fleshed out that can come in time. I would also ask for some type of PvE. I saw a trailer somewhere that talked about PvE in Dust but I haven't seen it in game. That would be a good way to give new players somewhere to go to accumulate skill points and isk instead of having their face shot off repeatedly in public games for a month or so. |

Hello and welcome to DUST.
Your feedback is pretty much what everyone else has been saying for months and months. Dust can be great fun but the annoying bits will certainly put new players off. I hope devs take this kind of feedback into consideration.

Agreed. Been in the same position as you, kinda still am. I'm just reaching enough SP to compete but still can't touch proto spammers. It is nice to read a well thought out post that isn't full of hate.
P.S. If your up to spending a little cash a month long passive booster really helped me out. About 1.2 million SP on my main.

The answer to your prayers is: Remote Explosives! The bane of proto stompers and tanks everywhere! Load up a fast Scout with Flux grenades and a low scan profile then blow them up! Or if you are a Logi you can bring down a LAV and Jihad Jeep those bastard tankers. Fun to be had by all! |

Get better. Learning to hide from proto and kill them when their guard is down, that's how you get better at dust

The classic response from tryhards. 'Get good scrub'.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

I do think you should do 20% more damage when shooting smeone in the back, would reward flanking more

Best advice i can give you is read forums for build and SP spending and in game try to follow someone around. Its much easier to take someone down 2v1 then try to lone wolf it, so stay behind him and try to take his kills and not his deaths. |

... you are playing Dust 514 incorrectly, but it isn't your fault. CCP foolishly lets people join matches without joining a squad.
Get in a squad of at least five; getting into a corporation will help with that but isn't necessarily required. This game gets significantly more fun and easier when you are in a squad.

He's only been playing for about 3 Months ... that means he's probably only got about 3 Million - 6 Million (depending on how much he plays) TOTAL SP ... not nearly enough to fit out a character as you suggest.

OP: you're an EVE player, so you understand that trying to take on a high-skilled pilot in a T2 ship with a low skilled one is a big mistake if you're solo. Add a small gang, use good tactics, and you will kill them everytime. Teamwork is critical to success in DUST too (especially when you're out geared), but hunting proto suits in cheap fits is incredibly fun and satisfying when you get the kill.
I blame CCP somewhat for this. I think the NPE and interface should really drive home the point that you need a squad and a mic to be successful. It should also do a better job of getting new players into corps. One suggestion I made in the past was for corps who are recruiting new players can request to be listed in a new corp menu (maybe add opening this as a step in the tutorial). On that screen would be a list of corps, their player cout, active player count, a description the CEO writes, tax rate, etc. so new players can quickly check out and compare corps that are interested in having them.
I know a lot of new players think, "I suck, have barely any SP and ISK, no corp will want me." Presenting them with a list of corps who are all competing to get them to join would empower new players and likely increase new player retention dramatically. It would also help smaller corps grow by helping newer players which is a win/win.
As to the points raised in the OP, I think most would agree with them. Welcome to DUST, get a mic, and squad up!
Best PvE idea ever!
