So I have always heard that the in game voice chat could / was partly to do with performance and lag issues in the game. So I recently decided to see what would happen if I turned voice chat completely off in the options.
The results were staggering!
Every map I have played with voice chat off has ran surprisingly well. Silky smooth framerates (At least compared to normal) and the biggest benefit - the Gallente facility that always normally has horrible performance, well it suddenly became totally playable!
I have a dilemma though - I can't go back to using voice chat now that I know it makes such a huge performance hit. How will I talk to my squad and corp mates?
Would anyone else care to try this and post your results here? (To confirm that it is the voice chat nerfing FPS)

Unless its a PC...squad chat or die. I don't do team chat in pubs. Someone always smacking on some chips. Some lil kid is screaming "mom". Somebody's kids sounds like they are destroying their apartment while they play. Some terrible music is being played

I have to start a longer squad and than turn off my mic so I can stopped getting connected to team chat and am playing a game by myself. And if I turn it off I have to go back and turn it back on in options when I am in a squad. A big ordeal, but yes apparently this is still a problem since CCP stated a while it was something about the system processing the mics noise and not expecting random feedback, something like that, they said they fixed it but I guess not.

Oh god totally forget team chat. Its always awful!
However I usualy do use corp chat , squad chat and chat channels. I noticed that turning the entier thing off makes a huge difference in game. At least to me.
For instance, I notice the AR seems to fire faster and the Combat rifle , wow, I can get that thing to nearly full auto when I am calm with my burst fires. Before I found this almost impossible.
So yea I don' know if it is just me but turning voice chat off entirely has gave me a tremendous performance improvement in game.

Reducing chat channels is helping performance big time!
By the way, CCP pleeeeease make it possible to delete local chat! It serves absolutely no purpose except annoying me with a blinking tag to show me that some kids or eve pilots have written absolutely irrelevant stuff! I want to get rid of it period.
Yeah, deactivate all channels you don't need, you won't regret it. |

I read somewhere, that the chat system was build for roughly 3 persons speaking at once. That's fine usually if it weren't for all those ptt/off users. Even ambient noise (ps3 near the mic anyone) Is overwhelming the capabillities of the chat system big time. So everybody who has a mic that is not cleanly seperating voice and ambient, should go to ptt period. It's necessary for your squads performance!

It's not about being anti social, if you wanna say something fine, but cluttering the coms with ambient/family noises is just ridiculous! Nobody wants to hear everybodys families arguing in the background or dogs barking and so on...

Mine is off and stays that way, because 90% of people with Mic's shouldn't have them... I must have heard about 5 people that actually used them to help the team/squad... Unfortunately I don't see the framerate improvements you do, the research turd still can't be flown around once people drop even 4 or 5 uplinks underground. |

Yup. This one guy use to play and the whole time his mic was live he was eating, arguing with the family or belching. I stopped squading with him because of it. I am PPT just for the reason you say, nobody wants to hear me call my wife fat ass.

gawd I had that happening the other day some fat **** was chomping on some dog kibble, couldn't mute the douchebag without muting the entire game, even my partner noticed it and was like wtf, ppls kids are the worst, especially if its someone you know and squad with a lot, how can you politely say hey dude would you please shut your mongrel kids up or turn push to talk on like a reasonable considerate human being? |

It's easy.. "hey man.. u mind setting ur mic to push to talk? I can't focus with all the background noise and ****"
"ahh.. no... i'm not doing that.." "you sure man? u sure u don't wanna put ptt on?" "yeah dude.. it's a pain in the ass to have to push the button.." "oh ok.. I see, just one second.. I gotta mute you"
then I check to see if his bubble is displayed.. if it's not? NO PROBLEM..
hit Deactivate voice... wait... hit Activate voice.. check to see if his bubble appears.. if it doesn't..
Deactivate voice.. Activate voice.. check... repeat until his bubble finally shows up.
Then hit x faster than a turbo controller: muted. Problem solved.. If he asks why he's muted... the answer is "sorry dude, I gotta focus, can't have noise in the background, pisses me off" |

Works for me on a psychological level too.
I often have really good solo games when I can concentrate and focus on what's going on without having other people in my ear.
The other day I left my squad and randomly went 46/3 with over 4k wp. kinda nice, but I do like talking to people.

An option to turn all chat features off while in battle would go down a treat for me. Maybe one team channel that you can see on the HUD instead of stopping and pressing 'select'. |

Great. Why dont we just port this game to PC (personal computer) fully? Would solve a lot of issues.....
By the way guys when I am talking about turning voice off, I mean turning the voice chat option TOTALLY off in the game settings menu drastically improves game performance. I am not talking about just muting something or just turning off team chat, I mean the god damn entire thing.
