Hey everyone, GimbleB here from Solar Gaming League. From April to June, IGÇÖm going to be running pre-season qualifiers for a Dust 514 league that will run until the end of the year. The 2 supported formats for this year will be 1v1 sidearm duels and 6v6 LAV brawls.
IGÇÖll be going into more details with signups, prizes and formats in the future. I just want to gather some initial feedback and give people the chance to start forming teams before then.
Pre-Season
So the pre-season format will be fairly simple. There will be a team/player registry shortly after 1.8 drops. Once that period is over, teams can challenge each other to matches to earn points for the first seasonGÇÖs seeding. Also, only the top 30 sidearm players and top 20 LAV teams will qualify for season 1.
The winners of every match will earn 5 points, losers will earn 1 point per match. Winners will also earn 1 million ISK per competing player, losers will earn 500k ISK per competing player. Teams can only play every other registered team once. There is the possibility of further prizes being earned at the end of the pre-season, but I canGÇÖt promise anything until signups start. You may only play the same opponent once during the pre-season.
Season 1 (and onwards)
The league will use a play for spot ladder system akin to Boxing. On top of this, the league will be broken down into 10 week long seasons. These seasons will serve as a limit to how many matches are played, how much team rosters are changed, how much prize payouts there are and giving everyone a break every 3 months.
During the season, teams will have to play 2 matches per season to remain in the league and can play a match every 3 weeks at most (so 4 matches per season maximum). ISK prizes will be earned through playing matches, with higher seeded teams being paid more. There is also the possibility of prizes based on season performance, but these arenGÇÖt set in stone yet.
Sidearm Duels
For those unfamiliar, I made a proof of concept video for this last year.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYlWs8kN_Fc
Before each match, both players submit a list of 4 fittings they intend to use. These are limited to one of each race/role combination and must have only sidearms as weapons with no equipment. So you can run an Amarr Heavy Frame and an Amarr Sentinel if you want, but you couldnGÇÖt run a proto and advanced version of the same suit. Officer weapons arenGÇÖt allowed, but faction and proto weapons are. Melee and Nova Knives are allowed.
All pre-season matches will be run using the Power Core small socket, with players starting on opposite sides. During the match, players cannot leave the fenced area and there is no form of restocking ammo (the supply depot will be destroyed before it begins).
LAV Brawls
Proof of concept video below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYWAoztIn6c
ThereGÇÖs a few significant changes between that video and the pre-season. The main one being a change to the map being used. Border Gulch will be used instead of Manus Peak and there is an outline below of the team starting positions, as well as the playable area.
http://i.imgur.com/vjKnVgQ.jpg
LAV brawls will be run in a best of 3 matches. Both teams start in their respective starting areas until a ref gives a countdown. After which, itGÇÖs a last gunner standing to finish the match. LAVs driving out of the playable area or a player exiting their vehicle will result in their team dropping a match. Use of any equipment (such as remotes) is also prohibited. If a team has only a driver left, then they must either switch to a gunner seat or forfeit the match. Players must wait until matches are finished to call in new LAVs for the next match.
LAV team rosters can have 6-8 players on them, allowing for subs in between matches. But only 6 players can be on field at any time and must always consist of 3 LAVs per match.
IGÇÖll be posting some more threads on the forums over the next couple weeks for signups and finalized rulesets. In the mean time, IGÇÖll be replying to questions here.

Talked to him again just now to confirm and it's all good as long as he's given enough notice beforehand. I'll most likely run the matches on a couple set days so it's easy enough for everyone involved.

God Hates Lags wrote:I love the concepts and am very excited to see where this goes. Out of curiosity what's keeping this from being an actual game mode? I would love to play some casual 1v1 in a small socket as opposed to the sprawling expanse we usually have.
EDIT: Also how did you get the third person camera? I imagine it would be fun to take videos of corp battles in the third person.
I'd love a simple 1v1 mode on a small map too, hopefully if there's enough interest CCP might look into making one.
Regarding the camera, we simply cut the bottom and the left side off in post-production. This wasn't ideal though as it makes the field of view tiny. A better solution until CCP add some basic spectator tools will be using the nanohive trick to hide weapons.

Eddie Rio wrote:Ok, i have seen in the options menu there is an option for UI transparency.. as soo as i saw this i set it to 100% to see if it would get rid of the UI, it didnt, and only made it slightly fainter,, im sure it would be very easy for a dev to set it so that the ui goes completely transparent at 100%
just a small point, but would be great for filming....
Made a thread about this a while back actually. Might see this feature in the patch after 1.8.

Free Beers wrote:The only thing i would suggest is make leagues or seasons short as possible. Remember last fall and the 3 month tourney when most players had gotten bored and quit? Keep things small and focused.
The main difference here is that I'm going for a minimalist approach with better rewards compared to something like UF. The seasons will last 10 weeks, but players play 2-4 matches during that period rather than 15 or whatever it was. Also instead of only the top 3 winners getting prizes, everyone gets something for competing. Winning and being higher ranked dictates how much you win. The system I'm using doesn't really have an end point, seasons are mostly there so I get a break 4 times a year. :P
It's also worth noting that matches would likely be played during Thursday and Friday evenings. So if another tournament organizer (such as ESL) wanted to enter the space and run something on the weekend, there would be no conflict.

Dunno about gambling, nothing to prevent private entities from doing it. If you're looking to spend some money, you could always sponsor a team.

Looking at feedback so far, I might scrap the 6v6 LAVs in favour of 1v1 sidearms and pump the rewards up. Will sleep on it.

From the other thread.
Quote:Sponsor can be anyone you want to represent (with their permission). This could be a corp, an alliance or even a real world sponsor. The idea is to give entrants a means of earning additional income by promoting something.
You earn prizes if you lose, so even if you're new, go for it. :)

If it comes down to it and there aren't enough signups, I'll be doing showmatches until Fanfest. So if you want to play against a friend or something, then we can sort something out.
