CCP, you consistently leave me befuddled. You make unique games with great lore and then you take a dump on it. You strive for balance using knobs and pulleys rather than combinatorics and statistics. You claim the hardcore title for your release(s) but cave in to the whiniest consumer who strolls through your forum. You want representation from the fanatical community which has taken root at your feet, so you choose who represents ... us?
There is a wall of text coming that has been boiling in on itself for some time, and I do not know how to fit it all in. As a disclaimer I am a Minmatar Loyalist. I am sure many of you may be surprised by this, but this is one reason why I am disgruntled. do not though assume that this means I Lobby for "our" equipment to be "the next" FOTM. I want a well balanced game as much as the next Amarr (so that when I kill him he can not quote game mechanics to me).
Much of my point of view is biased, I realize this. I however have good reason. I have been a Minmatar Loyalist for 11 years. I was here in Beta. I did things like armor tank a Typhoon (a minmatar BS) when everyone else was running around in shield tanked Apoc's (an amarr BS). While I do not hold myself solely responsible, It is because of players like myself, that independently (and yet still collectively) challenge the status quo, that we have the mechanics behind the lore we have today.
Let me give you all a little history lesson. Many of you DEV's may want to pull up a seat as I'm sure most of you have been lucky to find yourself where you are now, only after coddling your first tier 3 frigate less than 5 years ago.... Yes I called no DEV in particular a noob... You know who you are (which is many of you)....
In the beginning, Shield was King. You could not find an "armor tanked" ship. It was as silly to even consider it, much like the idea of hull tanking. Races distinguished themselves on which weapon types they used not what hitpoints they kept. It did not matter which race you were, you had shield skills and shield mods installed on your ship. Then you started seeing armor tankers pop up here and there. The Minmatar had a distinct advantage in that they could usually tank either way and add which ever utility was needed when the call was made. As armor tanking got more popular it was clear that the Gallente and Amarr ships were clearly built for it. In the height of this armor craze you would see even Raven's (a caldari BS) cruising around armor tanked. Something clearly had to be addressed...
It wasn't until they introduced battle cruisers to the game that the races got quarantined into their hit point game mechanics. I remember this moment vividly, as my cyclone came packaged with a bonus to "shield boosting". The memory still gives me acid reflux. Prior to this point, There wasn't a Minmatar ship you would fly with a shield bonus attached to it. come to think of it, there was not a Minmatar ship with a inherent bonus to shields on it that I can recall readily, and yet here it was in front of me. A flaming bag of dog ****. A bad omen for things to come. Spoiler alert, I read the tea leaves all wrong. I thought CCP were trying to box the Minmatar into the shiny new shield box, and totally remove their ability to either effectively tank either way. I was wrong, they released the Hurricane. It had (and still does have) equal slot layouts for either armor or shield tanking and was the fastest battlecruiser out there. A true example of Minmatar pride.
I began to understand what CCP was trying to do with the racial mechanics. The Caldari and Amarr, versus, the Gallente and Minmatar respectively. Caldari and Minmatar favor shields, while Amarr and Gallente favor armor. Each have their own nuances now. The Caldari nuance is electronic warfare. Their shields are thick and tough. They don't have to concern themselves with recharging them for a reason. The Amarr reveal themselves in their management of energy. When it comes to their armor they follow the same format as their friends the Caldari. Thick Armor plates, a virtual nightmare to rend your way through. The Gallente love their bots. Their armor while thin, repairs at an impressive rate. The Minmatar Pride comes with their utility and speed. While they can armor tank, Their shields are designed for quick skirmishes, which means small size and quick to boost back.
Now its time to point some fingers at some god damned elephants.

I don't blame ppl for not reading it. I wouldn't take the time to read a wall of text. I want CCP to read it. I also want them to know, that I know, that they know what must be done...
Look, It's not my thing to cry about this or that. You just don't forsake your core product by switching up things like "inherent racial bonuses". It is as some would say, "junky". |
