Over the 20+ hours of playing it
DUST did come to mind as a similar experience
For once the motto's seem to be ruthless/unforgiving:
Prepare to die / HTFU
Dark Souls expects you to die AND learn from that. It doesn't hold your hand and when it does it leads you into a dark alley to be ambushed by wretches and looks at you with a "what-are-you-gonna-do-now??"-face.
New Eden is... well pretty much real life; you may get stomped/scammed by users and/or CCP, you can quit or you can stay and fight to stomp the noobs of tomorrow.
DS2 After Dying a lot of times, you learn that timing is of the essence.
NE After losing your protogear to Fatal Error, Friendly Fire, LOL TANK MYWIN, you learn that the game needs to be tweaked to become the best it can be.
DS2 By timing your strikes and keeping a distance while always staying aware of the environment you become better and harder to kill.
NE Knowing what dropsuit to use for what situation gives you an advantage on the battlefield, even scouts who know when and how to strike become hard as hell to kill, although by being auto-spawned in front of a blaster tank or being put in a match with blueberries out of Academy you either fight against impossible odds and occasionally come out on top or rage quit to find a match where you do the stomping.
Talk about coming out on top.
DS2 Every single victory no matter how small will dispel the frustration and make you feel accomplished because you EARN every single one soul you acquire.
NE If you make it out alive in an ambush or so you know that your gun game was good, your awareness kept you on the low but then along comes a RR heavy, Blaster Tank, *insert FoTM here* and even if you don't feel frustrated cause that was all BPO's you feel disappointed cause you know that the game needs tweaking. You know it, the ppl qqing know it, the devs... let me get back to you on that one.... ?
TL;DR both make you mad, alright! but one rewards timing, awareness, learning from your mistakes, keeping calm in the face of utter damnation; the other is broken and fun but frustrating because it could be so much better.
