The OP's birdie was mistaken. The fleet that ProfV slaughtered in space was a Renegade + DNS fleet which was actually there to kill us.
http://icv.eve-kill.net/?a=kill_related&kll_id=22474041Here is a breakdown for the guys who don't Eve.
There are 4 entities in this engagement:
General Tso's
Renegade + DNS
Proficiency V. and Slightly Sexual
One lone Calamitous-Intent guy.
General Tso's had like 15 matches last night to provide OB support, so we were in a frig fleet. Frigate fleets can move around quickly so they are idea for situations like last night where we frequently had to move 5-10 jumps in only a few minutes. They are also cheap to lose and are pretty good at escaping if we run into a fleet we can't take with frigates.
Prior to this engagement, Renegade had dropped 2 DNS Blackops fleets on top of us earlier in the night. The first hotdrop was a pretty poor call by their FC, as the fleet wasn't really equipped to kill frigates. We initially bailed in anticipation of a more dangerous fleet composition, but then when we saw they brought mostly bombers with only a Rapier, Pilgrim and Falcon as support we immediately came back and killed most of their fleet with few losses on our side. The second time they dropped us with a Recon-heavy fleet which was much, much more dangerous to our frigates. So we decided to have a few guys stay behind to keep them interested while the rest of us went a few jumps out to get Cruisers and Battlecruisers. When our fleet got back we engaged their Recon fleet and again killed most of their fleet with few losses.
When our frig fleet entered system, the ProfV and Slightly Sexual guys saw what we were in and assembled an anti-Frigate Cruiser fleet with an overwhelming amount of logi. We were trying to decide whether we were going to change ships to fight them, but instead decided to see if we could separate some of them and kill them with frigates instead. We failed to catch anyone from their main fleet alone, but we did manage to scan down and gank their boosting Command Ship. Shortly after that DNS entered local in a frigate fleet. We weren't sure if the two fleets were working together and we were massively outnumbered and outgunned, so when one of our OB guys said he was under attack from a couple of cruisers a few jumps out, we opted to go save him. We arrived right as he died and avenged his death right as the match at that district ended. So we started moving back to Klingt where the DNS and ProfV fleets were, and while we were on our way back the two fleets started fighting each other on a district. We decided to try and see if we could take advantage of that and see if we could get in there and kill a ship or two that was far away from the main battle, but instead we caught a solo spectating Calamitous-Intent guy who just happened to be watching the fight (and was probably assembling a Calamitous-Intent fleet to get in on the fun).
EDIT: Derp. Forgot to mention that ProfV and Slightly Sexual won the engagement pretty easily, for the same reasons why we didn't engage them in our own frigate fleet.
And that's pretty much it. Good fights all around.
