Selling boosters is a good reason.
Also to get players active and excited for 1.8. For some players they will have over 3million SP ready to use on new items/suits etc.

JARREL THOMAS wrote:What was it for? For them to sell omega boosters, aurum fits, a record? Why? Several reasons. First, events give players something to do. This one, to be fair, has little interactivity other than "play." Another is to give players that haven't played in a while to come back. That would be why there is the 10 games caveat. If people start playing again, they may monetize the game eventually. It is also a "here comes 1.8!" fanfair.
Finally, as Olivier would say, "For the money, dear boy!" Notice Omega Boosters are back for the event. How many people bought them? That is 5 bucks for everyone that wants to use a booster. "Hmm, if I am going to get AUR, I might as well get the 20 dollar one because I get more. I can get a 30 day booster bundle and 3 Omegas for other events!"
It is really win-win. Players get more SP and CCP probably gets money that the players are happy to part with because it is their choice. They are likely to feel like it is a boost and rather a "if I don't do this, I am screwed." They have to be really careful not to keep playing the same trick every month because it becomes tedious and can become "If I don't monetize, I am behind so much now." |

Keeping in mind the masses upset by a lack of weapon/dropsuit upgrades respec, 2-3 million sp is a good way to quell said masses via a good head start into respecialising. If said masses observe the sanctity of logic. |

They're running monthly events. That's what it was for.

The ONE million clone challenge was to sell boosters and prepare players if they don't give upgrades/weapons respec.
It was also to bring players back for at least 3 days and possibly have them stay for 1.8.
The TWO million stretch mark was to keep the players playing and because of demand.
Other than that, I got nothing. It can't be generosity. The world doesn't work that way. |

It's kinda a hard event to miss - the possibility of a 1 million ISK payout(npt gonna include the bump-up past one million since that wasn't originally advertised), not to mention that boosters apply and to further sweeten the pot, omega boosters on sale.
It was advertised on the forums, on the website and in the DUST mailout. Also, CCP would have known that word-of-mouth on something like this would reach virtually all current and former players of DUST.
This is a lot of skillpoint inflation, something i don't like, not sure what CCP thinks but they don't seem to have a problem with it. If i was going to run an event like this it would be for one reason and one reason only: to get a real measure of the playerbase.
Additionally, because the omega booster deal is so tempting, CCP can look at the payment channel info to further refine their measurement of the real potential active playerbase, and to see how much interest players still have in the game.
Perhaps it's to set a baseline on the number of active players before Rouge lays it on the line and hits us with his best shot.
I hope you've been training hard, Mr. Rouge, sir, because these mercs are smart, mean, tough MFers.
I support SP rollover.

It is a strategy for not losing players in favor of Diablo expansion, wich is coming on 25th this month, same day than 1.8, and you can already try it out. Boring game as hell. That, or the russian thing.

There are several good reasons here but I think it comes down to a few things.
Booster sales - With the dropsuit respec booster sales could easily drop for a week or two.
Further Balancing - The data from players during this event will FAR overshadow any data they have previously collected for working out numbers.
Server Testing (copied from Vag) - I really hope the additional data collected from high load counts will lead to some future improvements by locating stress points that relate to lag both in game and in restocking.
Matchmaking improvements - As I said in another thread the matchmaking in pubs has seemed to work at its best during this event. With the higher counts of players of all levels I feel like there is a lot that can be done on this aspect. |

Maybe to boost activity? Or maybe to test their system? Sometimes devs like to have their servers bombarded with a bunch of players to see how it holds up under intensity
