I'd been following DUST for years, from the first mention CCP made of it.
Wasn't an FPS player, especially not a console FPS player, but at that point we were all thinking it was going to be a 3 platform release anyway. My whole motivation was that it seemed obvious that DUST would increase the social complexity of New Eden and the stories coming out of her by an honest order of magnitude. That's still my focus and driving motivation in sticking with DUST: evolving New Eden.
Followed every scrap of information for years, eventually we knew it would be a PS3 exclusive, so I applied for the beta and bought a PS3 and paid for PS+ to maximize my chances just before invites rolled out. Having never used a controller for more than 2 minutes before, i did a little research and it seemed like the game that would be the best preparation for DUST was MAG.
Bought a copy cheap and hit the ground running with a wet, meaty 'splat'. Honestly wish i had recordings of my first couple of months, i'm sure it would be great comedy now. But it was good training, the MAG crowd are tough cookies.
I think i got my beta invite the week of the Mordus trials. Logging into New Eden(not really, but you know what i mean) for the first time through the DUST portal was something special for an 8 year EVE vet.
First day passed in a blur - i was just so happy to be there and be part of it, wasn't looking to analyze anything just wallow in all that beautiful New Eden dirt. I wasn't very good and the MAG vets were way ahead of us already, but i do have fond memories of putting down Protoman and marveling at how f'in tough his suit's tank was. I remember the out-of-ammo knifefights in those canyons being awesome even if the range on the knives was ludicrously short and the hit detection was buggy. And that first map was a thing of beauty, i don't really give a kittenpoop about imbalance, put me on the disadvantaged side every time and i'd still pick it over anything we have now.
But ofc the first blush of romance faded, the hormones were satiated, and the brain turned back on: 'holy f*** this is rough' is what the brain said about the state of the game.
And that was my first impression of DUST: the transcendent beauty of New Eden, slammed down to the ground and stomped on by the lumbering brute that is DUST.
But we mercs, though we've seen lifetimes of horror and all done....questionable things, we're still here. Because there are limits, and that brute named CCPDUST is gonna learn the hard way that he cannot treat a lady that way.
Not on our watch.
