It seems the final dev blog for 1.8 is out, and there was no mention of any new sockets. It was planned for 1.7, and I understand that there were last minute issues, stuff happens, but you guys haven't been able to sort it out since then? CCP, we deserve some communication on this. If no maps/sockets in 1.8, when can we expect them? Was the whole thing scrapped? What's the deal?

I don't really think we "deserve" communication on this. 1.8 easily fills the months of content we've missed. I'd rather they focused on one or two things at a time. If I had to wait a whole season to get a whole new array of maps, followed by a similar wait for loads of new vehicles, I'd personally be quite happy with the progress. The teams are separate. It's not like a map designer artist can stop what he's doing and fix the code for cloaking mechanics.
We've had the same maps since 1.4. I remember hearing from CCP that it takes roughly 3 months to implement a new socket. That means we're short 2 sockets. They were showing screenshots of the complex under development back in 1.5 - 1.6, and it was scheduled for release in 1.7. At the last minute it was pulled for performance issues, it's reasonable for a rational person to assume that if it takes 3 months to build a socket from scratch, that any last minute performance problems would have been resolved in the 4+ months since the 1.7 release.
The lack of communication was frustrating. And yes, the players do deserve to know what the hell is going on. Many of us invest a lot of time, money, and effort in trying to help this game realize its potential. We should be told when things we were expecting won't be ready.
I appreciate the quick response from CCP. It was the right thing to do. I'd rather hear disappointing news than be left wondering if a new map was suddenly going to appear in the 1.8 download.
