Been following Titanfall closely, just read the review on The Mittani. Good comments below the article.
DUST 514 & Titanfall are a perfect mirror for an enduring debate we have here on the forums: What will save DUST, New Eden content or core mechanics?
The primary criticism being leveled at Titanfall is that it has no soul, there is little immersion, matches are essentially meaningless - the game is just a pure multiplayer FPS with conventional gamemodes. If the developers put love into Titanfall it's in the balance, the core FPS mechanics, the art, the animations - which are are essentially flawless.
Two other themes that are emerging from reviews are that the matchmaking can be horribly unbalanced and that game modes are the typical deathmatch, domination, capture the flag. Players are already complaining of modes being repetitive.
This is interesting, because wrt the issues of matchmaking and unimaginative repetitive modes we can effectively cancel those variables out of the equation when comparing Titanfall to DUST.
That leaves the two variables of 'soul' and 'core mechanics'.
DUST has the soul(well the promise of it, at least) but unpleasant awkward mechanics. In fact the 'soul' potential of DUST is essentially unbounded - when full integration with New Eden is complete, DUST will have gameplay so immersive that it will be capable of holding gamers for a lifetime. On the other hand CCP has given little indication that core mechanics will be receiving any serious attention anytime soon.
Titanfall has joyful mechanics but will never have soul. In all likelihood the mechanics will receive further polish. The coming VR revolution will most likely serve Titanfall well and showcase the care and attention the devs have put into the mechanics and presentation of their game.
That's it, i've got no deep observations to make other than it's a wonderful natural experiment in the field biology sense: a game with nothing but mechanics going for it and a game with nothing but (the promise of)soul gong for it, each competing in their relative FPS ecosystems for playerbase.
I support SP rollover.

Once we get all of the Weapons, dropsuits, and vehicles for races THEN we can focus on strengthening our soul I respectfully disagree, you can get the core anywhere, Its the soul at the OP put it that made me want to play this game when I had previously passed on every other multiplayer FPS. Hopefully we will someday have both. Yes, I see your point. With Lore we can keep players longer. But core mechanics is something that HAS to be fixed. I'd say that in New Eden, it's really more than just lore.
I've been playing the ESO beta and since i've never spent any time in morrowind/skyrim etc., the in-game lore is pure instant click-through for me.
I can imagine peeps from outside of New Eden feel the exact same way in EVE or DUST.
But when speaking about 'soul' in DUST, it's not lore - it's the epic worldbuilding that EVE players have done in constructing the social universe, the deep connections and the history that continues to influence and drive stellar politics. No amount of lore, no matter how well written, could ever replace what the players have created over the course of 10 years. No other game has this, and unless another developer is willing to spend 10 years tending to their own single-shard social sandbox, no other game will.
Imo it's also important that the universe is so ruthless and that CCP remains hands-off wherever possible. I honestly can't see any other developer nutso enough to take something like this on. One thing is for sure, they'd have to be an indy outfit.
I support SP rollover.
