*sighs* once again, the CPU/PG bonus means that if you spend that when you are level 5 in your suit you will fit your weapons at 75% CPU/PG cost. Combined with maxed out optimization and light & sidearm operation you are spending half. This means you can equip a proto weapon at the cost of an advanced or a LP store specialist weapon at the cost of standard. That frees up SP that can be used to run better tank, damage mods, equipment, whatever.
If that doesn't do it for you, go commando or sentinel or slayer logi they are respeccing dropsuit tree

2: Yes, you are cannon fodder. general cannon fodder at that. You're supposed to be a slightly upgraded general person on the battlefield (that upgrade will help you when going pew pew at someone, as in you keep on firing faster and longer than everyone else). Think of yourself as a upgraded pawn in the many chess boards of New Eden
3: They need another general Assault bonus imo. I would go with more carried ammo and explosives or something along the lines of that. You know, that be fine. Only if every body smart didn't exploit the fact that Commandos and Heavies will be far and away superior at the role we generally thought to be doing (i.e. 1v1 and small group combat) whilst still maintaining other superior things like awesome AV in the FG, and being able to pack a Swarm with that AR. And still lolLogi's with STILL superior potential HP pools, with more equipment slots, and more fitting. Assaults are getting more UP as we go on (kinda a good thing, kinda bad...), with bigger and badder people rocking bigger and badder guns, with no real gameplay mindset change necessary to fit the suit.
Its 1 slot, logi gets 1 total more slot has less base EHP and speed and loses the sidearm to compensate on 3 out of 4 of them. If you don't think a sidearm is going to be a big advantage in 1.8 then I just can't help you and I suggest you go slayer logi

Assault us the jack-of-all-trades master-of-none grunt type so to compare to specialist suits like commando and heavy is unrealistic. Reduction in weapon pg/cpu means you can fit higher tier weapon on lower tier suits or will free up more fitting options for modules or equipment.
It SHOULD allow for a more flexible fit at all tier. Gal Assault has had the weapon reduction thing since I've been playing (to hybrid weapons), it helps, but it's certainly not a grand thing now, since we get the same PG/CPU in the suit for an indefinite period of time - maybe til 1.9, a minuscule reduction to our side arm fitting requirement is near worthless. AR has a relatively low fitting requirement so it helps less with that weapon just like it helps less fitting a CR but now you get the bonus for all weapons and it will mean more if you want to fit a RR or ScR. I know I'm going to get about 6 PG more on my proto min assault with this bonus which helps me out quite a bit

Side arm offers the opportunity for more immediate flexibility with damage types. This is what I plan to do for my Amarr assault combine ScR with mag sec and be more effective against armor and Shields at the same time. I would love to see assault get a second grenade slot to increase that versatility. Plus that that would make it more like your usual FPS soldier
