Cannon fodder probably, rush in, remove a 1/4 ~ 1/2 of the heavy's/Commando's/Slayer logi's HP, and die so the rest can move in and finish the job.
We shall be kill assist masters.
Been a Gal Assault since the start, only that, I weep inside now, I'll weep more come 1.8

Assault us the jack-of-all-trades master-of-none grunt type so to compare to specialist suits like commando and heavy is unrealistic. Reduction in weapon pg/cpu means you can fit higher tier weapon on lower tier suits or will free up more fitting options for modules or equipment.
It SHOULD allow for a more flexible fit at all tier.
Gal Assault has had the weapon reduction thing since I've been playing (to hybrid weapons), it helps, but it's certainly not a grand thing now, since we get the same PG/CPU in the suit for an indefinite period of time - maybe til 1.9, a minuscule reduction to our side arm fitting requirement is near worthless.

I know I'm going to get about 6 PG more on my proto min assault with this bonus which helps me out quite a bit
Yes I agree it's better and more robust than before since it applies to all weapons, but assaults seem lackluster in comparison with the rest of the suits and it pains me
As it looks for the coming patch, Heavies will be no match in CQC or for tanking and point defense, Commando's will be undisputed at dealing damage and killing things, Scouts will be awesome going in cloaked and doing quick attacks at the flanks, and logis... oh logis... they are the true jacks of all trades, deck them up to hack, set them up to repair setting hives and healing or bring them in tanked and killing things better than us.
Assaults... ? well. it still looks like we will be Assist Masters.

This is what I plan to do for my Amarr assault combine ScR with mag sec and be more effective against armor and Shields at the same time. I would love to see assault get a second grenade slot to increase that versatility. Plus that that would make it more like your usual FPS soldier
Granted, it seems like a side arm will offer more than it did before, give the reduction on TTK and proficiency not making damage scale evenly. but in 1.7 it wasn't a big deal.
Still a sidearm does not give an Assault a specific role or reason to be, since only Logis lack it.
