Bat Cow wrote:Is it too much to ask for a single, central location for Dust news? Currently there are at least six sources (not including IRCs) for Dust news, and rarely do they all have the same info. Having to search through the forums for the latest news is ridiculous.
The mileage and goodwill to be gained from implementing this common sense measure are significant. It would up the level of the conversation by giving peeps a common reference point for game-oriented discussions.
A single place on the forums or a game website where peeps could go first to get up to speed and into the conversation.

Maken Tosch wrote:It's often far better to have more than one source in my opinion. Eve Online has the same way of decentralized news. The Eve Online Login Screen forums.eveonline.com community.eveonline.com Twitter Fail... err Facebook Google+ www.themittani.comwww.evenews24.com <---read at your own risk etc. Besides, there are people out there who don't really bother to browse the forums so social media and the login screen is often the only way to broadcast the information to them of any changes or events that are coming. +1 Maken re your point on actively maintained/promptly updated info on the login screen. It's something we all know to be true - if you want to make sure that everybody in the company sees something, one very solid technique is to staple it to their paycheque.
It is certain that nobody is argueing against multiple information sources, the issue at hand is the value of a single, centralized consise-but-completed information hub that could effectively replace the twitter/skype/irc/forum-mining process. The purpose of the hub is to allow players to know, without guessing, what information has been passed from CCP to players - one player or many players should make no difference. For the people involved in the DUST conversation this would be a big time-saver and also improve overall SNR on the forums for CCP.
It's a big win-win imo.

I'd be interested in hearing how you would implement this - generally we try to bring the "latest" news through all of the Official Channels simultaneously (Dev Blogs, Social Media, Forum Announcements, etc). Any discussion we have that isn't through these avenues can instantly be considered the "latest news"...and I'm not sure discussing what I had for lunch is necessarily worthy of a Dev Blog.
Chicken Teriyaki Sandwich with Avocado, FYI.
But really - would be interested in getting your feedback on that. :) It's great that you've put this out there as a topic for conversation, Saberwing, +1. Imo there's real value to be had from thinking about how we're communicating & channels.
More to say but at work, so catch ya later.

Well to be honest, even the login screen tends to fail to convey anything to certain players. The Burn Jita assault in Eve Online is a perfect example. When goonswarm attacked Jita, a traffic advisory was posted on the login screen warning every player that Jita is under attack by goons and that entering the system is inadvisable. Traffic was jammed as well on the stargates which meant you really had to go out of your way to ignore the traffic advisory posted on the Stargate and login screen.
...
Those stupid freighter pilots kept coming into Jita anyways. Here's the thing. Lazy freighter pilots (we usually call them haulers) usually use autopilot for most of their trips in high sec space. If there is a traffic advisory warning of a jammed system, the autopilot shuts down. That means the player has to really go out of his way to get himself into the system and risked losing his 5 billion ISK cargo in the process.
Stupid is what stupid does. I had my lols over Jita - the same thing is true for the ice interdictions, and many other examples.
But it's also true that, for those peeps who want to engage in the DUST conversation, we could prolly find some efficiencies that would serve us all(players&devs) well.

But really - would be interested in getting your feedback on that. :) It's just that logibro consistently breaks news of skills like the new side arm operation skills and even states that some of them are officially going to happen and others may or may not. It feels like a official source and is not always a easy way for everyone to know. there are other examples of this from other devs. Frankly if you have something set in stone you need to release that information as early as possible. This is a very good point. If a Dev knows that they can safely talk about a particular topic in skype or on irc, the natural question is: Why hasn't that information already been shared with the playerbase?
It seems the most natural thing in the world that when new information is available an update would get posted on the forums. I'm sure knowing the facts would save a lot of peeps a lot of posting and allow them to focus on more relevant conversations.
Questions i'm always asking myself: 'what are the relevant topics right now?', 'What would be a productive area to explore in conversation/debate with other players such that the conversation might be of some use to CCP wrt the topics that they're mulling over right now?'
I feel that there is little to no guidance from CCP here on the forums that helps me answer those questions.
