It rules our society just as much as the desire to be better than the guy next to you, rules you I like that mindset. With ~7 billion humans on this planet, that means that there is a very high probability that those with that mindset are, by their very own logic, not good. Though another ruling force of society are delusions/denial. So those with the aforementioned mindset will probably plug their ears and pretend like they are the best, and therefore, not in the categorization of "not good," even though they sit next to a guy that is better than them. Humans are silly creatures.
At the same time though, this mindset helps propel society and us forward. By us WANTING to be better, we can strive to achieve more.
And it's not silly at all. Females naturally look for a mate that can sustain themselves and survive effectively. Males want to reproduce. So they try to be better at surviving (or at least seem like they are) than the other males and what not. It's natural animal instinct
