What makes EvE great, and how is that demonstrated/replicated in DUST 514? Thanks, The Forum pool boy.

You can actually do things. Many things. Interesting things. A variety of things.
Sandbox gameplay. Actual MMO interactions, uninhibited by the rules normally forced upon you in other MMOs. It's got tons of content, works relatively well, and is very free and open.
You have long since made your choice. What you make now is a mistake.

For me is the depth, lore and customisation. (Auto translate almost changed this to "death, loss and customisation", which is quite accurate as well )
The dust fitting concept is totally ripped off from EVE, even if it only skims the surface of the complexity of EVE. Most (if not all) icons you see in game are also taken directly from EVE, as are the concept of passive skill points.
I really recommend you try it out, at least a trial account. Make sure to finish the tutorial (something that HAS NOT been replicated in dust )
For me the hardest part is choosing between shooting people in the face, or blast them to pieces from orbit.

The fact that the universe is filled with dangerous sociopaths ;) who thrive in that environment - if you try and take their stuff you will encounter the toughest competition you've ever faced in a videogame.

You get a ship. You undock from a station, you go do whatever you can do. Just like walking out of your house and getting in your car. It is what a man can do and what a man can't. It doesn't really exist until you make it exist.
That is what makes it at once exciting (on paper) and boring (in practice).
It is Second Life in space.
I stopped playing because I have a First Life that I need to deal with. I need more Pac-Man immediacy in my games.

Let me give you an idea of what it REALLY feels like to be an Eve Online player.
Imagine a world where you can do anything. And I mean "anything" as long as what you do is within the confines of the game and use only the tools given to you. Basically what CCP did with Eve Online is give you a sandbox, a shovel, and told you "do what you like" as long as you're not cheating. And by cheating I mean using third party programs to automate everything you do (ie: using bots). As long as you don't do that, you're A-OK and you can do the following without any consequences.
1. Scam players any way you like via contracts, trade windows, and even ISK transfers. 2. Steal the assets of your corp and then disband that corp on your way out. 3. Use that corp to fund your schemes. 4. Corner the market or at least try. 5. Attack mining vessels without provocation and force them to buy your mining vessels. 6. Disrupt mining operations and mission runners. 7. Steal loot from someone else's wreck. 8. Forcibly take territory and use it to create your own empire. 9. Create a galaxy-wide spy network that is so sophisticated that the CIA and KGB will be jealous. 10. Attack and burn the economic hub of New Eden for three days non-stop. 11. Catch any lone player in low-sec and ransom their ship or pod for ISK. 12. Bribe Concord (the space police) to let you attack another corp without Concord interfering. 13. Hunt and destroy players with bounties on them. 14. Accidentally start a battle that ends up in an article posted by the BBC, Forbes, and others.
And that's just the top of my head.
You will never find a more hostile game anywhere in the world.

Literally its a sandbox. With the same excitement and pace as one would have playing in a actual sand box. but then the sand gets in your boxers and well you know how that goes.

The one thing that stands out for me regarding EvE is the death penalty. This is the only game that I play in which I actually hesitate undocking before quickly checking my fittings... just in case. Get popped? Whatever gear survives is looted by scavengers. There is no running back and picking up where you left off minus a minimal repair bill. It's just... gone. If you stick around after being podded, your pod can be destroyed where in you die, effectively losing skill points if you've not created or updated a clone for backup. Gone, done, and done. That, to me at least, is friggin awesome.
That applies here too, more or less, with the loss of gear on death. But here it's so fast and insignificant it kind of falls below radar. DUST BPOs **** me off. In EvE you use BPOs to manufacture unlimited runs of the item, but you must still invest in material or cost of material to produce the item. There is no free reproduction.

Like in Dust how you spend hours fitting and thinking about counter fits in EVE you spend more time in that because it's more complex. To me this was what appealed to me on the day i downloaded dust. I had my fill of BF3 so i was not over anxious to get into the battle part but i spent hours pouring over the market, skills, and fitting. I was like living my dream that day because i love fitting, market in EVE and i loved FPS.
EVE has this overwhelming sense of awe when in first dawns on you that the vastness of space is real or simulated to the point that it is real enough, there is no gimmick of loading instances. This realization blew my mind as i was expecting the normal lame standard of instances.
There is also this redeeming sense when you realize that this not going to be another cookie cutter MMO that holds you hand from linear progress of quest to quest or makes you kill 5 NPC pirates to collect 5 pirate eyeballs to save a dying planet. non of that textbook MMO 101 crap. The ppl who like PVE/RP there is meaningful missions, in a way, to immerse you.
For the hardcore it is a dreamland, without the threat of someone summoning a GM for "not playing nice". There isnt this juvenile sense of saftey.. there is not a disgusting sanitized feel. There is no one to hold your hand or summon a circus clown to hand you a balloon when your sad in EVE the only way out is to think.
Then to see yourself become smarter at the game, and learn to survive. Like I'm very proud of learning by trial and error how to run blockades and generally go where i please. This ie sn't any great feat in real EVE players eyes but as a lone wolf I found I could leave high sec and waste some pirates time while make buttloads of more isk
and actually saw my name on some carebears profile sayomg that i needed to die- this brought me great pride, i was like, wow i somehow made an effect on EVE enough for someone to mention my name in their bio. This was at a time when ninja salvaging people's loot caused great QQ to PVE players. I took it farther and looted the cargo holds of the wreck which flags you to be shot by the wrecks owner and started designing my own ships specifically for theft.
I came up with something that makes me LOL a lot, it's not glamorous and is just bottom feeding, i loot shipwrecks that were engaged in a massive battle with a sneaky fit. This is a lot funner than mining for me. And allows me to "interact" with hardcore players. I am real a scrub like that in EVE and just dont care. Everyone's got a role to play and that is mine. Just some galactic vagrant.
Last I played i fit a frigate, did a 30 jump null roam around great wilderlands, but no one would stick around to fight me. Not that I'm some scary guy but i guess they just weren't up to fighting frigates that day. I was looking to be blown up.
Which brings to the point that it's not like other MMOs- you dont grind linearly to "the best ship", because there really is no best ship. There is no end game uber fit. There are millions of fits. it depends on what needs to be done so even the lower tier ships are put to use in the "end games" but that is not a very good term to use in EVE.

The only thing I don't like about Eve is how complicated it is (for me anyway) and that the only place you can walk around in is the Captain's Quarters. :( It'd be cool if the market was actually a place where you could walk around and talk to people about buying their stuff. :(
