Im guessing: Because PS3 HW sucks and couldnt handle their previous engine. Because it was a cheap band aid to continue with the project.

I dont know, maybe because it was one of most used engines at time. Basicaly they made a big mistakes, there is a big amount of better ones. I know Unreal have one of the most advanced core physic mechanics. But for what is that, if CCP cant fix glitches and bugs like "soil-catch" (do you know that shock when you running on eemy and in one second something catch you for foots, like zombie in some b-movie), invisible walls (today i was on map and i tried to take cover near to hill aprox five metres from me and guess what, i stuck on invisible wall two metres from edge of that hill), cornering (do you know that feeling when you saw enemy behind corner, you threw grenade and that nade bump from air ner corner back) and many many more. I just dont know why this, there is many many other licensable engines better and easier for Ps3 optimization. But hell, how they cook that, now they must eat that.

But in all seriousness, CCP ditched Carbon because the PS3 shat itself running it.
The only reason to pick UE I can think of is time restraints. Its not exactly the hardest to code for, and it was already optimized for consoles.
The problem is not that its somehow hard to code right for, the problem is with the UE that its inherentely sh!t.

Honestly wasnt that just optimization again, because i dont trust them anymore after all that lies before. AC, Motorstorm, TLoU, GTAV, Mirrors Edge all these games had awesome efects and graphics. Ps3 is not that weak, how they told us.

The PS3 really is that weak. Consoles are inherentely weaker hardware-wise than contemporary PC parts. At launch, even.
You know, 720p, or rather its 4:3 equivalent, 1024x768 was PC standart in 2004.
Thats 10 years ago.

Dust was announced 2009, that five years later than you PC standart info. Oki Dust was announced 2009 and they didnt know, they will have problems?! Thats stupid even more, honestly. Another fishy thing on whole story with engines. You know how i see that, i agree its mostly made up story, but i see that like. They had engine prepared, but it was late for its improvements/optimization/finishing and they ask sony. But sony told:"Nope boyos you had your time, now we want see progress." A guess what, they told:"Hmm we have this concept but engine is not properly finished and optimized for Ps3." Sony gave them razor on throat, because there was just barely started project and CCP arives with this AWESOME idea about Unreal engine, what was really great with all that thingies, but after some time and beta release, the imaginary scythe hit the stone and CCP found terible think. They cant do that properly again
Da da daaaaa
And from that time they blaming Ps3 from its weakness, but there is hidden thing. Why other studios made that and CCP not, thats the real thing, the reall question

There is cause why:
- One point was - built in multiplayer - layer in engine (good scaling - but we still miss 64x64 and 128x128 players at maps but it is possible). - Second some more platforms like PC and XBOX, but Microsoft want to much money for store and patch systems.. So best option was made it 'exclusive' for Sony (at last for few years... so not fast we get PC version )
Just dig deeper ;) and dont cry now... Grow man make decision and live with it.

Thats 10 years ago. yes and consoles are made to be affordable first. remember when the PS3 came out with that fancy blu-ray player built in? The thing was dam near $600 and hardly anyone bought it.
come on... you think microsoft, the company that owns what most computers run off and is probably whats running your computer, doesn't have the top of the line cpu assets to put into their Xbox.
and i just relized you put "PC standart" instead of standard... im sorry but i can be a little anal about these things. :/

I dont know if that crying was on me, i actually never cried about game. MAG that is pretty one example, what Ps3 can. With properly optimized engine we can have MAG-DOMINATION scale battles. But honestly, what i see roght now is bigger push on players wallet without a reasonable progress. MAVs, Jets, rolepay, pilotsuits, full connection with EvE etc. Thats all somehow was lost, even core mechanix and balance is missed and i mean from start. I always found it strange that when CCP realized they could not use Carbon effectively, why they didn't just licence Havok software? All the best looking games on PS3 were built on it (Uncharted, The Last of Us, Killzone 2&3) and it obviously can be optimized to get the most out of PS3 hardware. Even MAG used it I think. It is pretty much set up for shooters too.
Oh well, let's hope there is a better plan for PS4 someday. |

Because the only game CCP has published is on PC and they are unfamiliar with console programming. The PS3's processor is a nightmare to try and figure out how to code for it in the beginning so they needed something that already worked and would be easy to pick up.
Because the only engine CCP has ever used to publish a game doesn't work on PS3 so they needed the fastest route to get the game up and running. Since Unreal is probably going to require the least amount of modifications to make it work it most likely seemed the prudent choice.
Not saying it was a good or bad decision...just saying it was the path of least resistance.

Good point, its basicaly engine for physiques but its still. It is too difficult to ask for inhouse engine of guerilla killzone for example?? Or anyhing what already working fine and properly?!
